Im back to having the locked file issue again. atr least the games play through the laoder, but the loader is bugged. once activated, it gives me the "waiting on locked file: nclauncher.exe" loop again. i guess i'll have to go back through the boards and find the original thread i was commenting in to figure out what fix i had found. but, if my crappy memory serves, i didnt find a fix. it just started working properly :P

If you have a copy.nclauncher.exe file in your Program Files\NCsoft\Launcher folder (or wherever you installed the Launcher), try deleting it.
If the problem persists, try uninstalling the Launcher and making sure your Launcher installation directory is removed (remove it if necessary) and make sure you have the latest installer (from here: http://us.ncsoft.com/en/launcher/ncsoft-launcher.html ) and try installing again.
ok, i just ran the entire process again intending to list specifically everything the launcher says and does and came across something new. this time, and this is the first time it's ever done it, all game servers are red dots. so, now i cant even get the new launcher to be ready to run the game. That said, in the past the game servers have always been green dots that, when you click play after selecting one, another message comes up that says the launcher needs to be restarted for updates. restart now/load/error code-1/loop:restart later/launching game/fail/game is broken and cannot repair itself, sorry(paraphrase).
this is a consistent and unfailing cycle. after all this(lately), i'll go through the control panel:add remove programs and unistall ncsoft launcher, then go through windows explorer and delete the folder itself to remove any left over remnants, then delete new cohupdater.exe from live/test/beta folders and rename all old.cohupdater.exe files so i can at least play while my frustration subsides.
this is a process ive been going over since i first posted that i had this problem some 3 days ago. during that time, ive gone so far as to uninstall the entire game itself, the same way i uninstalled the launcher. ive taken all your suggestions and done my utmost to follow directions, uninstalling various other .net frameworks and updating drivers and other files and reinstalling .net/msxml files to latest and most complete versions. so far the only thing that has changed is what i cited earlier in this post; that the servers now show red dot.
what other information can i send to try getting some resolution for this?
thx for your help and suggestions thus far Tex. wish something would work so i could stop bugging you and let you get on to other things. -

going back through to reinstall .net
still not working. reinstalled ,net 2.0, 3.0, 3.5 SP1, and somehow installed a version of 4. MSXML 6.0 SP2 and and something else as well as 4.0. rebooted system and no more error messages about things not loading. checked all my current shortcuts for stability, then downloaded the new launcher. and still getting the same errors, loops, and problems.
im all burned out on this nonsense today. maybe tomorrow will bring better news. if not, at least i know how to get rid of it and keep playing using the old launchers until someone figures out something. 'cause im at a loss. -

on another update note, i finally managed to get the entire .net framework to uninstall and currently have no trace of it. upon reboot, i got an error msg that a dsca.exe failed to launch and so wasnt going to. it thought i was a <insert choice expilitive here> and had had enough of me(im paraphrasing here).
before i managed to get the entire framework to take a hike, i took Tex's advice and installed the latest .net available, 4.0. after installing, i tried installing and running the new launcher, and had no change in results. it still says "Waiting on locked file: nclauncher.exe", and provides no launching results.
however, since now i finally do have the .net framework uninstalled, im gonna try it again with this clean slate.

uninstalled the new launcher. rebooted the laptop. tried loading the game through the old shortcuts and got an error message saying the nclauncher couldnt be found. went through my folders/files and checked out what the launcher had changed to redirect my regular loaders to that one. deleted CoHupdater.exe, renamed old.cohupdater.exe back to CoHupdater.exe and got things back to normal. all shortcuts worked just as they did before this whole problem. hopefully a recommendation or suggestion or idea will come out soon. again; works just fine on my HP desktop. doesnt work at all on my Dell laptop. -

ok, brief update. puzzling as it may be.
so, the problems ive been having(and are still having) are with my laptop. for whatever reason i gave up on the launcher working in a manner that would resemble a launcher and not some useless piece of junk that makes other programs cease to function properly and uninstalled everything from top to bottom. no more game client, no more alt servers, no more installers, no more launchers. then, i reloaded the launcher and that is now downloading the initial client. once thats in place, i go through the process of remaking my test and beta folders.
here's the interesting part:
mere moments before i threw my laptop at the wall and stomped it into a billion teeny tiny little plastic and metals parts, i set it down and went to check my desktop system. i launched all my standard, regular, no frills launchers for the lipve, test, and beta servers, making sure any available patches or updates would be done and done. live did load something small. no biggie. then i closed all my launchers and loaded the live server. once it stabalized at the login screen, i closed it. then i went to the web site and downloaded the new launcher, with a great deal of trepidation. i ran it, installed it in a folder beside, but not within, my city of heroes folders. tenatively, cautiously, hesitantly, i moused over the launcher icon on my desktop. with quivering finger, i flicked twice at my left button and sparked the new launcher to life. a flash... a twinkle... a pop up. then another. and another. repetitvely a window jumped up and ran away, my fist poised to be smashed into my monitor should this fail to work. and then....
It worked.
i.... i..... i cant explain it. i dont know what i did differently. was it the checking for updates beforehand? was it the placement of the folder? was it my fist hovering 2" from the side of my head, cocked and ready to fire??
these and other questions of the universe may never be answered.
im still locked out of my ncsoft master account from the site, but at least i can play from my woefully substandard desktop while i wait to find out how much a new laptop will cost me, after i smash this one to little itsy bitsy bits when the new loads dont work. but hey, maybe this whole launcher issue will be sorted out by then and my laptop will get to live.
we shall see.
and, sadly, im not sorry to tex that mods and devs are taking a hefty ration here on this. there are also plenty of people touting and gushing their love, admiration, endearment, and approval for a launcher that works perfectly fine on their systems. now, if you guys want the rest of us to feel the same way, i have a modest suggestion:
buy the rest of us comparable systems.
cant do it? welp... critism is part of everyones job. we all get told how good or bad we're doing from one source or another. eventually the problems will be resolved, more information will flow from the devs and code writers, tempers will tamp down, and life and gaming will go on. until then... people are upset. you're going to hear about it. thats just how it works. -

If you are getting the error that NClauncher.exe is locked and cannot be patched, exit the Launcher and bring up the Task Manager and in the "Processes" tab, look for NClauncher.exe, right click it and select "End Process" and select "Yes" on the warning screen.
Then, restart NClauncher.exe and it should patch properly.

pick exit, and the launcher closes. pick ok, and we go to the launch screen. select city of heroes:install game and it's now dling in the background. should take all night to get the entirety of the game loaded. wont know if it boots until then. so...until then... if anyones looking for me, i'll be over there in the corner. bashing my head against a wall stud.

so, after selecting to continue through the error-1 file locked: nclauncher.exe and just opening the launcher, i choose to repair(consistency check) the live, test, and beta servers to see if i can get something to open. all three run updates, all three pass, and all three show green dots which i assume signifies that the game is ready to run. so, i select the live server and select play now. only i get a message that says the launcher needs to update so should i restart now or restart later. if i restart now, i go back through the loop where upon i get the locked file error at which point i can exit or continue. exiting solves nothing so go through and continue. back to where i was. so, choose restart later. now i get the error code that the game needs to be repaired but cant repair itself. dot turns red.
...alright. so uninstall the new launcher which so far is garbage. reboot the computer. restart, and try again. now city of heroes doesnt show on the game list, though i still get the same 3 choose your own adventure style windows. so, go to the ncsoft account page so i can reload the client, only theyve recently implemented new security measures. i think im putting in the right answers: my secret question(though i really dont recall putting that as my question, but i definetly know the answer to it so i mustve), my birthdate, and the mish mash flash image letters. only obviously im not putting something in right. the capitalization of my secret answer? spaces or no spaces? does the day of my birthdate need to be 2 digits or is 1 sufficient? what the hell letter is that in the flash image: a u.... a v??? is that an r next to an n or an m??? WTF!?!?!
well.. FML. now im locked out of my ncsoft account management page, i cant dl the game client, i cant figure out how to get this piece of garbage new launcher to stop locking itself(since, ya know, the locked file is nclauncher.exe.....), and i cant get the original launcher to work since i already dl'ed the original update through it so when you click on it, it looks for this stupid new launcher.....
what else can POSSIBLY go wrong??

sorry if that was hijacking. it wasnt intended to be. i felt the Q&A relevant given the enhancement mapping that was suggested, especially in light of how im clearly not grasping several concepts and you guys seem to know a thing or two about these things. i plan on rebuilding following the mapping displayed, or as close to it as i can get.
the commentary conclusion may have been unnecessary, but i was trying to give a little background into why all the questions. not that i was trying to be just some smartrass questioning someones creations. i really am struggling with how to build a better toon, in light of all the changes. and thats got nothing to do with ED. i had no problems with that since i didnt have anything six slotted as it was. my power builds were all already pretty diversified with acc and taunt and end redux, etc.
thanx for the info, links, and suggestions. i really appreciate them. again, sorry if it was a hijacking. that wasnt my intention. i'll PM any other questions or commentary regarding the build since itll probably be long past a reasonable time frame when i can get started on it and see some results. and thanx for the mapping Doom. i have high hopes for putting your genius to work! -
i dont think im grasping the concept, so maybe i could bounce what i think i know off you guys and you could correct me as needed, since im fairly frustrated after the ridiculously pathetic display i put on tonight.
wasnt the whole point of the IO Sets to gain the bonuses a set could offer? doesnt only having 1 or 2 of a set make it fairly pointless? arent IOs better bonuses individually, based against the slight though multiple bonuses a single set enhancement can offer? saying that the dmg % on a lvl 50 Dmg IO is greater than the dmg % found on a Dmg/Acc/End Set IO? so id have to slot the power for more enhancements to be placed, but in the end, the % would be higher.
also, given the .... i dont even know what to call it... "hostile takeover" of the auction houses(???) and the ridiculously jacked up prices, isnt it fairly impractical to try getting your mitts on all the IOs listed for these designs, seeings as how you would need several billion infl/infa/praetorean $$(i dont know what theyre called...) just to get even half of the stuff on this list? whereas common IO recipe drops are plentiful, even if all the salvage needed isnt.
im 1) frustrated with the turn of events in-game, everything from the nerfing of my tank:my main toon:my baby, to seeing the prices now listed in the auction house for everything im looking to get, but cant sell any of the crap thats useless to me for more than 1K... 2) confused over the new incarnate system and hearing ppl tell me they think its actually made their toons worse!... and 3) lost over how to rebuild my toons properly, efficiently, cost effectively so that theyll resemble something a little bit less like mud.
i thought i19 was supposed to bring about more solo friendly playing? did i miss something? could use any suggestions you guys have to offer. -
ran the incarnate system for the first time tonight. Stone/Stone tank. havent been able to really play in several months, shortly after 18 went live. ran a quick respec since i know the fitness pool is inherent and wanted to take advantage of the powers id be able to get now with those selections freed up. didnt account for the enhancement slotting so neglected to slot properly before getting called to help someone take down recluse in the final Blaclk Scorpion mission. got owned 4X due to his end sapping back pack.
he ended up calling in two other ppl and we managed to drop him in short order. left to start working on the incarnate system. came to the trapdoor mission and, after getting owned 3X, googled "how to beat trapdoor". came to this thread. ran every single suggested scenario for defeating him solo. NONE worked. lava? for about 30 seconds, until he pops out 2-3 phantoms and then neither the lava nor my attacks even scratch him. hallway? nope, line of sight makes no difference now. alternate between dropping minions and pounding him into sand? if his spawn rate was anything other than 1 every 10 seconds, that might be effective. but i spend the entire time chasing down phantoms and never get a chace to get more than 2 hits in on him when i finally manage to stumble into him on my way to the next phantom! nothing i did, tried, thought, shouted, cussed, or pleaded worked! Nothing! that is, until i asked a friend if this thread was mistaken or the mission had changed significantly recently. he said it had and logged in an illusions/kinetics controller. in the time it took to summon everything up and start the debuffing/regen sapping process, all my attacks and having him fight my with Granite/Rooted/EE in the lava were having absolutely no effect whatsoever! it was absolutely embarrassing!!!! a tank that cant hold 1 enemy, much less fight it. what the hell is the point of tanks again???
i took to the high road to make the suggestion that i drop my diff setting to -1 x0(even though it was already +0 x0), when my friends controller started making some real progress. he had set PA, Phantasm, summoned a tox tarantula, and something else so was more or less running a kinetics mastermind!

FYI: We are seeing lots of crash reports with that driver version. Definitely update your drivers to either the 10.1 or 10.4 drivers.
im running Windows XP Home, processor is an AMD Athlon XP 3200+, have 1280GB RAM, and using a Radeon HD2400 w/ 512MB onboard memory. yes, i should have a dual core processor. i dont. could that be cauing the problem? is the video card not up to snuff for the game? do i need more RAM? i was running a Radeon 9250 card with 128MB of onboard memory, but i seem to have fried that one which is why i upgraded to this lower level yet still higher ability card. my mobo has a GeForce 2 series chip embedded in it that i can always revert back to, but with that the game is suffers constant screen freeze, choppy images, lag, rubber banding and all the regular common run of the mill problems. id appreciate any and all assistance and advice i can get from you guys. im stuck playing(when i can bring myself to it) from my laptop which drives me nuts.

edit: ps. the latest update i attempted was from the AMD hotfix Catalyst 10.10 Hotfix for Windows XP Professional and Home Edition. this is the one that told me my card couldnt support any of the graphics for the game. -

Ok, i know this thread is 2 yrs old, but seeings as how a small issue was never resolved, i thought i would through it in and finalize the last issue. maybe itll help someone somewhere sometime eventually. maybe not. in any case, the little lightining stick that points to the character and the transparency aspects....you can get rid of those by setting your background color to have an alpha/tansparency note after the desired color(which is irrelevant) to zero/zero. so the bgcoilor tag should look like this: <bgcolor #FFFFFF00>
this will remove the little pointy bit and give you a completely transparent background. you can further modify it by removing the border with the same note and so now all you have it mystery floating text over your head. you can further confound ppl by making your text transparent and force ppl to read their chat windoiws....which is just rude to ppl who enjoy bubble-viewing. but...the options are yours.
the only thing is that you have to use the formal RGB values, not the color name. so it wont work like this <color red00><bgcolor black00><border white00><duration 10><scale 3>
youll get a big 10 second long mess. i have my mastermind set for this and its a solid silver border with red text and no background that last for 10 seconds, no pointy bit pointing at me: /bind enter "beginchat <color red><bgcolor #FFFAFA00><border silver><duration 10>"
so...theres that. hope it resolves that
