I think this is key. You can pick ATs/powersets based on your preference. If you can't react fast (or don't like to), play a resistance-based tank. Everything happens in slow motion. Hardly anything can one-shot you and your hit points go away slowly. If you want the game to be hopping, play something like Dual Pistols or Katana and have Hasten. I have an energy/energy blaster with Hasten who can toss around an astonishing amount of damage. But if I don't kill everyone fast, or at least knock them down, I'm dead.

No, and they never did. On the other hand, I can see the point in "Go talk to the Hero Corps Rep" (AKA the guy to change your difficulty settings). If you never get sent to them, you might not be aware they exist.

Quote:Surely you know someone who would volunteer. If not, I'll do it. Even if I didn't have throw-away toons on ever server (which I do), it takes less than a minute to make a new one.I still have a bunch of characters created around the time going Rogue came out that I still don't have in an SG because I hate asking other people to help so much. It's also an extra pain if they are strangers since I have to log on the leader, go into the base and lock down all the storage just in case they turn out to be a thief.
BTW, I've been surprised on multiple occasions when people that don't know me that well (in my opinion) have promoted me to superleader in order to get a new toon of theirs to that rank.

Quote:And? Why would I care what people assume or think? If I see someone with a thousand badges, I know it's more likely that he went to badge-hunter.com and took a look or downloaded maps and guides than did all that stuff naturally, and so, in the end, it means nothing ; and even people who might have done that stuff legitimately, it still means nothing to other players, because as there's no way to tell if they got all that by gaming or metagaming, the most likely assumption is that they took the easy path like everyone else. Them's the breaks.
By the way, the badge system has, overall, been a definite success. For some people, it is their primary interest in the game. The game therefore has appeal to a broader audience than if it did not have badges. That is success - whether you agree or not; whether you like it or not. If it's helping retain or increase peoples interest in the game, it worked. -
Quote:Hey! I call them "guides" or "progress charts". "Cheat sheets" makes it sound like you're cheating someone, which you are NOT.On the other hand, it's fairly obvious the system has failed from the start with so-called badge hunters exploiting every loophole and creating third party tools and cheat sheets.
Oh, and "so-called badge hunters"? Bite me. -
I would like to answer this two ways, firstly in my normal voice, then in a sort of high-pitched, nasal whine . . .

1. Should I be spending reward merits to get better IOs as I level, or should I bank them for when I hit 50?
It depends. Do you expect to exemp to lower levels much once you hit 50? Some people only play their 50's at max level. If so, then yes, wait until 50. Personally, I exemp *A LOT*. Therefore, I slot IO's in the range of level 30-35. I will generally blow all my reward merits on random rolls when I am at level 34.
Note: If you take random rolls, they will drop at your level or the highest that set goes - whichever is lower. If you're 40 and the set ranges 10-30, you get a level 30 recipe. If the set ranges 10-50, you get a level 40 recipe. If you are BUYING the exact recipe (which costs a lot more), you can use the level slider to pick the EXACT level to receive.
2. As I get to later levels, is there content that I should stay away from until I "gear up," or should I just jump into what is available.
Jump right in. My only qualification to that would be regarding SOME high-level content if you are going to be the ONLY tank on the team. Most tanks can't handle the AV's in the Statesman TF without suitable support from the team. In the Apex TF, Tin Mage TF and the Incarnate Trials, the enemies are all level 54. Again, if you're the main tank, you need support.
3. I just recently learned about Hero/Villain Merits. I assume that I need to complete 10 tip missions to get one. Is that right?
Correct. Say you're a Hero right now. Do 10 tip missions toward Hero status, followed by a Hero Morality mission. The FIRST time you do this, you get Reward Merits. Every additional time after that, you get Alignment Merits. If you enjoy these missions, that can be an A-Merit every other day. More than that if you do it on multiple toons.
Please note, once you have Alignment Merits, if you change alignment THEY GO AWAY. Spend them before an alignment change.
If anyone has any general tips about what I should be doing to get ready for later levels or any other insights, they would be appreciated.
I dunno. Shield is a good set. I have a shield/axe tank at level 50. I assume you are going to be taking Tough and Weave. That has a big impact on your survivability. Now that we get Fitness inherent, it's easy to get the Fighting Pool in there also. Personally, I scraped to get as much defense as I could - within reason. I did take Combat Jumping, but not Maneuvers. I have a few good sets, but no purples. My defense is 52% melee, 50% range and 48% AoE. This is more than you generally need, but every extra bit helps if enemies are debuffing your defense. -
I skipped both of those on my dark/dark also. I skipped OG because I don't take powers that hurt me. I skipped ToF since it's single target. If I'm only hitting one enemy, I'd rather be going upside their head. I did take Cloak of Fear, though. (Dunno if you did or not. I don't have Mids so I can't see the build.)

Quote:I would have laughed. You ran into an absolute and utter moron. MAYBE that line of questioning would have been okay if you were on a shield or ice tank *AND* you were the only tank. For any other AT to be told that . . . well, there was a noob in that conversation and it wasn't you.I was excited to try out the new incarnate trials and headed to Pocket D to find a group. I ended up getting a tell from someone about it and I explained that I had just come back and it would be my first time. They said no problem, then asked if I was defense capped. I said no, and was called a noob and that was that. It kind of made me mad.
Most of my characters that I run the trials with have absolutely no defense at all except for whatever buffs teammates apply during the trial. Oh, wait, the character I run the most does actually have some defense - my scrapper has Combat Jumping. I think that's 2.5%. -
Quote:No. Balance ALLOWS fun. It doesn't guarantee it, but a badly balanced game is NOT fun. Badly balanced games can end up one of the following ways:I am guessing the idea of balance plays into powerset match restrictions. Once again balance trumping fun, in this case a BIG fun factor.
1) Everyone picks the same powers because they're the best. I think most people would be bored. I sure would.
2) Everyone is extremely powerful and can blow through the content. Then what do you do? Make another identical toon and start over?
3) Everyone is gimped and the game is frustrating.
4) Some people are gimped and get frustrated and leave the game. If "some" is large enough, the game fails.
Balance is one of the requirements for a game to be viable in the long term. -
Perhaps a scrapper with /regen secondary? Regen is considered a very 'clicky' set and it gives great survivability. For the primary . . . I guess a fast set, maybe Katana. I think Spines is good for AoE but I have never played it.

The last I heard about this, it's not random. However, I don't think it would be a good idea to provide further details in a public forum.

The correct name is Inf Badge Seeker

Recluse has an END drain power. At least, the version in the STF does.
-
It has nothing to do with the second rez itself. It has to do with how long you are lying there dead. On the first kill, the rez power is ready to fire immediately. For the second kill, it has to wait to recharge. If you lie dead for more than 120 seconds, you go to the hospital whether you like it or not.

I'm seeing it too and it's all the time. My theory is that the hurricane messed things up somewhere.
-
Ah, now that's different. If someone isn't responding to tells, that's a bad sign. The whole F7 business strikes me as BS. I have been on numerous teams where they asked people to hit F7 and I NEVER do it and never got kicked for it (or even had anyone say a single word about it).

Who are you most well known as in-game? I mean character, but maybe you have an inappropriate nickname, and that could be fun too.
Ironblade.
What have you been doing in-game lately?
Oh, same old same old. Lots of task forces. Moving some characters to Vigilante alignment, particularly on servers where I don't already have toons on both sides.
What do you enjoy the most in-game?
Task forces.
Praetoria, Mercy Island, or Atlas: Which is your preferred landing destination?
What if I wanted to say Galaxy City? That's not an option?
Anyway, Atlas Park is my preference.
How long have you been playing City of Heroes?
75 months of vet badges.
Why did you originally choose to play and/or stay on Infinity?
I originally picked it because I liked the name. Then I met people and started playing with them regularly so I stuck around.
What are your plans for "Freedom"?
I just got a new tank to 50 so that I would have an extra to move over to Triumph. Aside from that, play all the new content.
What is best in life?
Chocolate.
What is your favorite movie?
Maybe 'Metropolis' (silent film made in 1926) or 'Rock and Rule' (animated film with music by Blondie, Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, and others).
What is your favorite book?
I guess 'Oath of Fealty' by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle.
Outside of CoH, what are your favorite games?
The Myst series and mah jongg.
Sports: Yes? No? Favorites? Teams? Players? Do you play any yourself?
No.
Care to share the vision that is you? Pictures from 6-7 years ago of me can be found here un/fortunately (depending on perspective).
I'm on there too.
What keeps you from playing City of Heroes for gross stretches of time? (Kids, jobs, spouses, other hobbies, fill in the ______.)
Work. Sleep.
And finally, have you blurred the lines between my two neat categories? Do you play in-game with anyone you know "IRL," to use one of those dreaded stereotypical abbreviations that haunt the gamers' reputation?
Sure. I play with my brother, his wife and 3 others I know from real life. -
Interesting. I thought they had fixed all instances outside the Arena where you could get healing credit off uninjured targets. Is it the Cimerorans that break this, or the Incarnate power?
