General Questions from a Leveling Tanker

Hey guys, lots of good info in this forum, and I just had a few questions. My first toon after returning to the game after a few years is a lvl 32 SD/Mace tanker. I have been using a fairly standard build, although I will need to do some tweaking when I get closer to 50. I am happy with current performance. I don't put out a ton of damage, but I am not squishy. Have run several TFs and have done very well.

Okay, questions:

1. Should I be spending reward merits to get better IOs as I level, or should I bank them for when I hit 50?

2. As I get to later levels, is there content that I should stay away from until I "gear up," or should I just jump into what is available.

3. I just recently learned about Hero/Villain Merits. I assume that I need to complete 10 tip missions to get one. Is that right?

If anyone has any general tips about what I should be doing to get ready for later levels or any other insights, they would be appreciated.

Thanks!

For 3. The first time you reaffirm your alignment you get 50 merits (ie half the reward) so you won't get your first A-merit until 20 tips but after that it's 10 (plus the alignment mission).

For the first 2 the only hole in sd is defense debuff so CoT and Carnies can be a problem. I've only really dabbled with tanks though so I don't know for sure.

My recommendation--and this also falls under the "general tips" question, is to start planning your build now. Often some or many of the IOs you want will not be level 50, so there's no reason to wait until 50 to get them. Do you have enhancement storage? It's hugely helpful if you do then you can start acquiring the IOs you'll need as you level and storing them if necessary until you're a high enough level. But even if you don't have enhancement storage, planning your build early will help you identify which IOs you can make and slot immediately and which have to wait until later in the build.

You'll have to be a little more wary around Psi enemies, defense debuffers (Cims, etc.) and foes with big ToHit bonuses (DE Quartz, for example) but all of the content is manageable. If you run into an enemy group that gives you a lot of trouble, post here and it's likely someone can give you tips on how to handle them.

As Klaw said, it's 50 merits the first time and 1 Hero merit thereafter, so at 5 tips a day that's a Hero merit every other day after the first one. Also keep in mind that if you have some influence reserve, you can buy Hero Merits with 50 regular merits and 20 million influence. That's actually a very good bargain in many cases.

Thanks for the tips guys! Very helpful. This game is quite a bit deeper than it was when I last played, so this is all very helpful

1. Should I be spending reward merits to get better IOs as I level, or should I bank them for when I hit 50?
It depends. Do you expect to exemp to lower levels much once you hit 50? Some people only play their 50's at max level. If so, then yes, wait until 50. Personally, I exemp *A LOT*. Therefore, I slot IO's in the range of level 30-35. I will generally blow all my reward merits on random rolls when I am at level 34.

Note: If you take random rolls, they will drop at your level or the highest that set goes - whichever is lower. If you're 40 and the set ranges 10-30, you get a level 30 recipe. If the set ranges 10-50, you get a level 40 recipe. If you are BUYING the exact recipe (which costs a lot more), you can use the level slider to pick the EXACT level to receive.

2. As I get to later levels, is there content that I should stay away from until I "gear up," or should I just jump into what is available.
Jump right in. My only qualification to that would be regarding SOME high-level content if you are going to be the ONLY tank on the team. Most tanks can't handle the AV's in the Statesman TF without suitable support from the team. In the Apex TF, Tin Mage TF and the Incarnate Trials, the enemies are all level 54. Again, if you're the main tank, you need support.

Correct. Say you're a Hero right now. Do 10 tip missions toward Hero status, followed by a Hero Morality mission. The FIRST time you do this, you get Reward Merits. Every additional time after that, you get Alignment Merits. If you enjoy these missions, that can be an A-Merit every other day. More than that if you do it on multiple toons.

Please note, once you have Alignment Merits, if you change alignment THEY GO AWAY. Spend them before an alignment change.

I dunno. Shield is a good set. I have a shield/axe tank at level 50. I assume you are going to be taking Tough and Weave. That has a big impact on your survivability. Now that we get Fitness inherent, it's easy to get the Fighting Pool in there also. Personally, I scraped to get as much defense as I could - within reason. I did take Combat Jumping, but not Maneuvers. I have a few good sets, but no purples. My defense is 52% melee, 50% range and 48% AoE. This is more than you generally need, but every extra bit helps if enemies are debuffing your defense.

To help out on some of this as well I used my merits to get the recipes I need, for certain reason IE some times on the merit roll i get lot of junk.

To do the tin mage/APEX u will need to have your alpha unlocked to do but u do not need it slotted, although most ppl will not take u if your un slotted. There is a way around having buffs for the STF on the last mish against LR. That is either have hover/fly or temp fly which u can get in the shadow shard and taunt at a distance in the air where he can not hit you.

The only thing wrong with the hero/vill merits is that u can only use them once every 20 hours. Other then that it is not a bad deal, and there is some IOs I take that are lower lvl then lvl 50. Such as Kinitic Combat which the max is lvl 35. But like Iron said if u are planing to exemp down try to get lower lvl IOs. There are some exceptions to that rule though. Some of the unique ones stay with u when u exemp down.
