  1. "We've exhausted all options including the selling of the studio and the rights to the City of Heroes intellectual property, but in the end, efforts to do so were not successful."

Wait... So their efforts to exhaust all options were not successful?

This is some pretty awkward writing for a professional copywriter.

  3. Guys, the EULA you agreed to when adding paragon points or setting up a game subscription clearly states that there are no cash refunds.

It sucks, but legally, I don't think you'd have a leg to stand on with NCSoft.

Disclaimer: IANAL, I just read EULAs compulsively.

NCSoft quite likely laid off the 80+ employees of Paragon Studios to shift the savings in salary/logistics to cover the 6 million dollar loss NCSoft had this quarter. Without developers and artists and game designers, etc. you can't keep an MMO open.

Figure roughly $80K/person, that's $6.5 million dollars per year saved right there.

High level executives in a company have one job: Grow stock value, by whatever means.

Well, TonyV said it was designed to tamper-proof the contents of the file. It'd be pretty lame if it was a straight CRC32.

    It's not, check yourself.

Calculated the CRC32 for the file as-is: not a match for the embedded hash

Removed the XML tag after </character> and computed the CRC32 without a match

I also tried a bunch of other tricks I won't post here because they're naughty.

    Nope. Not trivial.

And if another pro publisher bought out the IP and PS, I would think they would not allow character imports due to both the potential for hacking and the fact that those who didn't use it would be starting from scratch, which would make for extremely imbalanced new servers both team-wise and economy-wise. Newbies wouldn't stand a chance in the market.

    I'd like Zwill's and Positron's/War Witch's/other PS's take on this.
No real potential for hacking. The file is checksummed, so if there's even one bit modified it'll fail the checksum.

    Great work, thanks!

For me, City of Heroes has been nothing less than a coping mechanism.

No matter how bad things got, I could always keep going by promising myself some time as the hero/villain du jour.

I don't know what I'm going to do without it.

Well, yes I do. I'll go on. But the world will have lost a bit of the magic that makes it worth living when City of Heroes goes dark.

As long as the ownership of the IP, assets, and code was with the community, absolutely!

    SilverAgeFan:

I may have simplified a bit. All I was saying is that I don't think the current common MMO business models cater to the needs of the community which emerges from an inherently social game. Being a code-monkey, I'll admit I don't give much thought to business organization or logistics. Your information gives me hope that there is a way to do what we want!
  10. Tony, sounds like you're in the bargaining phase of grief.

I doubt very much the outcome will be different whether or not we talk nicely about NCSoft.
  11. I'm a developer. Not a game developer. (Although I scripted a popular NWN server back in the day and did a lot of the design)

I would quit my job and work full-time with no pay to resurrect our game.
I'm very good at learning new tech.

Emulated servers are not an option. NCSoft has an obligation to aggressively protect its IP. The project would be C&Ded before long.

The scenario I'm volunteering for is if the IP is acquired but Paragon studios remains dissolved.

As an aside, I will never play a non open-sourced MMOG again. Profit and community are adversarial.

In fact I've half a mind to start an open source MMOG engine project regardless of the outcome. MMOGs would still be expensive, but not having to worry about engine licensing might allow smaller studios to compete more equally, and allow for community crowdsourcing of a modern, full-featured game.

  13. They ought to open source the game and tools. It's not like CoX's codebase is something they can sell off.

That way the community can resurrect the game, and aspiring game devs can learn from their efforts.

    Event Fail

This event has made me realize just how fail most players are. Everyone spams AOEs and incarnate nukes at the nemesis swarms willy-nilly, not cluing into the reason they're league-wiping.

I remember when people actually knew what to do with things like nemesis Lts.

Nowadays it's zerg 100% of the time. Push butan until all dead.

    Sad.

5 slotted. I found this out the hard way.

    Balance.

Pet AI wonkiness is part of the equation for MM's. Giving us that level of control would break the game. Sadly, it's not a bug, it's WAI.
If you are going to state something like this as fact, please provide the official statement from a redname.

Really? My scrapper with the superior proc slotted is showing a crit bonus autopower on Live currently.

Complaining about it is futile as nobody is listening and it will never be addressed other than in a haphazard way that only ends up nerfing the set even MORE.

I'm not being cynical....I'm quoting history here. Seriously. Move on. Make something else, your borked powers are going to remain borked as the PVP game represents an absolute non-issue for the dev community.
    +1

It'd drive me nuts to go to work every day and not do something to the horrible mess that is PvP in this game if I worked for Paragon studios.

What's especially sad is that the reason it hasn't been touched and probably never will be is purely bottom line: super packs pay bills, PvP doesn't.

So a 25% resistance blocks a quarter of the debuff, 50% blocks half of it, and 100% means that the debuff will never affect you at all. Most debuff resistances cap at 95% though, I think that only speed debuffs (both movement and recharge) can actually reach 100%.

Yes, the regen debuffs in the game are pretty insane, and it's likely that, even resisted, most will floor your regen. However, a Willpower character should not be relying on regen alone. You have good resists, +HP, and defense (and even a heal if you're a stalker!). All of your protection should be slotted and used together; doing so will make you a nigh-unstoppable beast.
Yes. I get how regen debuff resistance works.

I think it's a bit silly to punish a whole category of mitigation for the sins of one set, though. I'm looking at you, regen. You were so uber back in the day the devs are still scared of you.

Willpower is great because of the layered mitigation. But when regen goes poof along with defense, which is not high enough to prevent def debuff cascade failure, ~40% res is not going to keep you up long.

Regen -is- the critical mitigation layer on Willpower. RTTC is the defining power of the set.

When your regen goes, that's when you go from ok to dead.

This is true even on my current scrapper who is IOed out and has 30% melee/S/L def, capped with one Defensive Sweep, however more situationally: when there's -def in addition to -regen.

My experience is that WP has a -regen resist number which fails to effectively mitigate the majority of -regen in the game. If I am incorrect in this feel free to rebut.

I believe the disparity in numbers is an error or oversight.

It's pretty useless when there are minions (Longbow spec ops) which can utterly shut down your regen for an entire fight.

I get that the devs are trying to make the regen set have to use tactics, but to punish other sets having regen mitigation with the huge debuff numbers is a bit wonky.

Everything which hits you with a regen debuff shouldn't drop you to 0.

Heck, the only -regen debuff I've run across which doesn't drop fully saturated RTTC to 0 is a single shot from a praetorian clockwork. But the second shot will.

Most regen debuffs are very large: -500% and -1000% aren't uncommon, so resisting about a quarter of the debuff means you're still debuffed quite a bit.

That said, I have no direct testing of whether the resistance is working or not, but just from what you're saying I see no reason to suspect a bug.
So essentially, a regen debuff resist of less than say, 500% is utterly useless is what you're saying?

    That seems... odd.
  23. Is scrapper WP regen debuff resistance bugged?

I ask because it seems like every time I get hit with any kind of regen debuff my regen goes to 0%.

If I understand regen debuff resistance of which I have 25.95% from Fast Healing, this should never be possible.

To test, I went and played with a Rikti Heavy Assault Suit, which has a power that debuffs regen by 1000% (and fires every 4 seconds, wtf?)

Sure enough, one application by a +0 heavy assault suit floored my regen to 0% for 20 seconds.

So, it's not reducing the duration of the debuff, or the amount.

    Bugged?
  24. Not having played with ATOs in beta, I bought a bunch of super packs to give it a whirl.

I was lucky enough to get most of the scrapper ATO set, which was better than what I had slotted, so I bought the rest of the set and slotted it. Yay! Great bonuses!

I'd also gotten 3 catalysts in my super packs.

I went to combine with my slotted scrapper set... Only to find that once I did, I LOST HALF MY BONUSES because the combined superior ATO is counted as an entirely different set.

This is counter-intuitive to say the least. There are no other enhancement sets which behave this way. Nor was there any kind of warning.

I was quite angry at having spent not only real world money but lots of inf and time to slot the set only to screw it up.

I suspect I will not be the only one who makes this costly mistake.
