Yup. If you want the bonuses but would also like them catalyzed, save up six Catalysts.
glad I asked... actually I won't upgrade any since, as I understand it the +10 recharge counts as the same as my 5 purples... it's a shame I can't upgrade my proc without losing the recahrge... since the set in question is the defender set... i'm not really too disappointed... but it does seem wrong that upgrade would have a negative affect on my build's goals.

Given the ranged defense and power range bonuses you get from the set, I'd think it would be worth considering pulling one of the purple sets, catalyzing defender's bastion, and replacing the purple set with an equivalent. Replace unbreakable constraint with basilisk's gaze, for instance, and in exchange for 1.25% global recharge you get ~2.5% ranged defense. That can easily be a good trade.
Yep, once I end up with enough Catalysts I'll be upgrading the Blaster ATO set to purple grade and replacing Coercive Persuasion in WoC with the Malaise set. It's a shame you can't just upgrade the proc without losing the set bonus.
It's equally a shame that you can't move the catalysts between characters on an account. But from what I can tell that's WAI.

I suppose if you can still trade the superior enhancements between characters on the same account you could slot a set on one character, catalyze it, then use enhancement deslotters to remove it and email it to another character. Still, if thats the expected wayto use up 'extra' catalyzers is just as moronic an idea as binding them to the character rather than the account.

I got a catalyst on a character that will never be getting an ATO set due to his build being too tight (softcapped Broadsword/DA, using the ATO set will kill my soft-cap)
I have another character that needs 6 Superior ATOs to finish his build......he has not gotten a catalyst yet.

While the servers were down Zwill ran an impromptu ustream with Arbiter Hawk(ward). It wasn't recorded so you'll have to take my word for it but one of the bigger "reveals," if you will, was that they're well aware of the issues with the current catalyst non-tradeability situation and are thinking of ways to fix it. You know, soonish. Maybe.
