Nope, sorry guy, I never saw any dialog boxes to close. These must be dialog boxes along the lines of those that appear during itrials: so small and insignificant that the simply are not getting noticed. Why in hell's bells would I decide to close dialog boxes and ~then~ come HERE complaining? That makes no sense whatever.

Anyways, speaking generally I am now level 9+ and things are going a bit better.

1. They call CoX dated looking?!!!! CO looks like something done on an Etch-a Sketch, and thats with the outlines turned off. The water effects are a true LOL. Capes: LOL.

2. In-game community seems very snarky and unwelcoming. They *know* we are coming there, and its totally "OMG N00BS." People asking for help in Broadcast are either ignored or mocked.

Not me, because I have not dared to open my mouth, given the general mood. But I don't feel very welcome regardless, knowing that is how people feel. Perhaps I will just minimize my chatbox and concentrate on killing stuff for a while.

Maybe I'm to used to COX, I was hoping to re-create my characters in CO but found the Archtypes to be somewhat confusing or limited. My main is a Energy/Energy Blaster type of character but I just can't find something similar in theme over at CO.

I will miss you City of Heroes..

The archetypes in Champions Online are incredibly limited.
I'd recommend that anyone who tries the game out to dish out the $15 for a month's subscription so they can try freeform characters.

Energy Blast = Force powerset, for ranged blasts with knockback.
The only archetype who uses these is the Impulse, which you'd have to pay for anyway I think.

Kinetic Manipulation in Force would be your best slotted passive for a Blaster type character.

For Energy Melee you could take Burning Chi Fist from Unarmed Martial Arts (a good quick hefty punch with energy effects).
If you liked the Stun aspect of Energy Melee, I highly recommend Sonic Device in gadgets - its a 30-second self buff that makes your next attack do extra sonic damage, and a short duration stun. It creates a big spherical impact on the boosted attack, which looks great for a devastating "Cosmic Punch" kind of idea.

There's no real parallel to Energy Torrent or Explosive Blast. Force Cascade is a very fun all-out blast in Force, very much like what happens when Cyclops opens his visor fully.
Force Detonation is a ranged knockback AoE, but a bit more like Respulsion Bomb in Force Fields than an Energy Blast power.

You wont be able to mimic your character completely, but its pretty easy to create an effective character with knockback blasts and cool punches.

Try joining the CoX chat channel. The people there are generally fairly helpful, and the channel itself is pretty drama free. Sometimes, the community rep Trailturtle drops in.

Uh... So, what? You want the instructions to take up your whole screen? Would you like to get a simultaneous text message, voice mail, snail mail letter, Facebook comment, etc. every time the game has direction to offer you? Along with your computer going into full screen message received mode, with voice verification? Just to make sure that you read the instructions? You know, you could also just... Read the instructions. On your own accord. If they're too "small" for you, I guess you can use that same excuse for running red lights. "It was too small officer, make the lights bigger!"

...Yeah. Champions has better graphics than COH. Even the people who don't like CO's art style admit to that. Champs has better graphics, it's just a fact. Whether or not you like the art style is personal preference, but it's certainly not grounds for general insults and CAPITAL LETTER LOL'S.

Oh yeah, they're so snarky. What kind of jerks would set up a sticky thread in their forums and create several channels, plus plan a welcome to CO event for the day after COH closes!? These people sound like condescending jerks! And how dare they have the audacity to answer all COH player's questions with several pages of responses on their boards, while veteran CO players give assistance in game via channels! Man, those CO players. I don't know how they could have the nerve to go around, not insulting our graphics or our community. We can't let em get away with it!

The current popups do not appear to explain energy builders. WTH, Cryptic?

Huh. And here I was just telling a friend of mine about the new streamlined tutorial and how the cat-carrier mission didn't seem to exist any more (not to mention the Foxbat mission, and the mission where you save the hero from the cage). And also how the boss fight near the end is far more painful, presumably due to no longer getting equipment in the tutorial.

As for your bar not charging up all the way - have you not noticed the mark denoting where the bar will charge to on its own? Did you not use the very first attack power in your bar throughout the entire tutorial and thus not see the blue numbers popping up by your character and the blue bar going up? I think the tooltip for that power may mention it is an Energy Builder. Any place you can view the advanced description for it should also show how much blue it gives you per attack.

Many of the power sets also have an "Energy Unlock" type of power, which builds energy for various actions that usually revolve around the mechanics of that particular set.

Any of the places where the game tells you what the various stats do will mention that Recovery sets your Equilibrium - which is the little mark that denotes where your blue bar will charge to.

The quest tracker and minimap tend to give all sorts of direction, pointing out where just about any current quest objective is located, as well as where to turn in quests that are complete, and even marking many nearby quest-givers that you haven't discovered yet. But then, I could never understand how people in *this* game could have all the info the UI gives and still be asking basic things like where the mission is. Do people just get tunnel vision on their character's shiny butt as the UI slowly morphs into unreadable hieroglyphs on the periphery of their screen?

Not really helping yourself here you know, you just sound jerky and condesending as they complained about. "Wow how stupid people must be not to be able to follow instructions." Yes the CO map still does it's best to get me lost. And better graphics? ah no way.

Please understand my comments are coming from someone who dearly loves COH. I want our game to continue, and am doing everything in my power to achieve that.

"Better" is going to be subjective. I believe what they were trying to say is that their graphics engine is more advanced. Which it is. That won't translate to "better" to many CoX players, since it's too cartoony for most of them.

As for as the rest of the snark, I've definitely come across more of the typical MMO noob bashers and such, but the CoX channel has some wonderful people that enjoy teaming in it.

Also there are a ton of people on their forums willing to help out, some of them giving away gear as well as advice. It's not all bad.

There are a lot of comparative arguments going around. I suggest we all help each other out instead. Feel free to hit me up in game, or hell... mail or message me whenever. I'll do whatever I can to help.

New project: Troubleshoot the tutorial and hammer Cryptic into bugfixing again. Last time I ran it, I noticed they lost the 'how to block' mission.

Not....really. Maybe a better graphic system.

But CO only has two textures, plastic and shiny plastic.

I loved the metal textures in CoH, but the "metal" textures in CO look worse than Morrowind's enchanted items.

The problem is that CO doesn't even try to use its graphic system to full effect, probably because of it's "comic book" theme. If CO had graphics like Startrek Online (which uses the same exact system) I'd play it more. Their faces look like faces, their eyes are actually proportioned to their heads, and their clothing textures look like..get this....cloth.

In the end, even if it has "better graphics"

the textures still look like ****

You'll note that in all my comparisons between the two games, the graphics are not among my complaints or complements. I don't particularly love CO's graphics, but I don't hate them, either.

My complaints are, as noted, a way-too-tough tutorial (which makes me wary about how much the rest of the game is just going to frustrate and annoy me rather than make me feel heroic), and the lack of "concepts" within powersets (which essentially turns my Electric Brute and my Electric Blaster into the same CO character) as well as an overall lack of powersets and power styles (which entirely eliminates my Staff/Dark Brute, as well as all my Masterminds and Dominators) with the only trade-off being able to make Jack-Of-All-Trades characters (who have to spread around their stats so much that they're overall weaker than a focused character - that's the problem with stat-based systems)

The archetypes are just premade characters (with two powers slots less than freeforms)and they are not the best choice of powers and skill (no real player would create a character that way)The way to enjoy the game is to create a freeform character. Now even silver (free players )players can buy a freeform slot on the market.
What you would say about a girl that has superstrenght, invulnerability, fly,can shoot laser beams from the eyes and has superbreath ? That is one of my freeform characters not the cousin of that guy (okay i admit that i was inspired from her when creating that character lol )

No, I'm pretty sure that's a slap in the face for everyone saying stop being so ungrateful.

I applaud him for having the guts to say those things. That was the first wake up call in this whole thread.

Look at us, we were the best community out there. Don't let Ncsoft take away our morals. In fact, if I were going to be mean, I would tell ya'll to stop claiming you came from CoH community.. Because the attitude here just stank! It's so embarrassing.

CO is being sympathetic, they have the heart. Let's just all be grateful. The post was not bad to me.. It literally melted my heart.

Yes, I get that the CO players are being sympathetic. Please reread my post: I stated that THB praising the CO community for being so non-snarky was ironic since he spent the first 3/4 of his post being a jerk to someone who was honestly having a tough time with the game. If that post melted your heart I really don't have anything to say other than "wut?"

You can't be a jerk for 3 paragraphs and then somehow redeem yourself by praising someone else.

EDIT: The praise wasn't even made with good intent. Rather than saying "You know the CO community is really trying to help us out" THB opted to use the charity of CO's players as ammunition for berating Bad_Influence. Real heartwarming, let me tell you.

What, precisely, are we supposed to be grateful for again? That some other inferior product exists that we *could* start playing once this one dies?

Am I supposed to believe that the company reaching out to the poor poor people on the sinking ship are doing so out of some sense of altruism instead of giving me a hand while they reach into my wallet?

My distaste for a game's mechanics and graphics are now a moral case?

Ummm, no.

Be well, people of CoH.

I was not attacking you. I was reading the whole thread and it breaks my heart. We are all going through a phase because we lost our game. But the thought of this other game, the only game in fact who welcomed us if I'm not mistaken... Will come check this thread and see all the hate.

We are basically Ncsoft, heartless.

What we should all do is file bug reports if we see bugs in CO instead of misleading and scaring homeless players. Or better yet, play another game that will not make you pissed off. Because this thread has been focused on thrashing CO. I don't see other threads about other games with full of negativity. It's definitely fishy...

1. I am talking about in-game, not their forums which I have hardly touched. Not unlike these forums, useful in-game info is very, very deeply buried if one seeks the answer to a specific question.

2. I have yet to see "veteran Co players giving assistance in game via channels." What I did see was a bunch of snark along the lines of "OMG here they come, the game is ruined!!!" Not to mention a lot of disdain for free players - unfortunately, I am not paying for anything until I see how well I like the game. Adorable. Makes me want to play, let me tell you.

I will join the CoX channel there. However it still seems that most people in-game do not want CoX migrants. Which is their loss, but whatever.

3. You're a condescending jerk. I'd ask you to post your CO global so that those so minded could make a point of avoiding you in-game, but I am sure your sunny and helpful attitude would make you stand out in a crowd.

4. " Champions has better graphics than COH."

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA HAAAAA!!!!

Thank you.

I've played both CO and DCUO. Both are bad for various reasons. Once they close down CoH I won't have another super hero MMO. I'll have the other 4 MMO's I've been playing along side CoH for a year or more, but no modern-ish day super powered one.

Seeing the changes on the Beta server (not even counting how awesome Bio-Armor is), only make me more sad that it's never going to hit live and that the folks at Paragon studios were doing such great work and got blindsided by a poor parent company.

The reasons I've seen for people 'thrashing' CO are legitimate, especially when you compare it to its superior, CoH. There's a lot of things CO doesn't do right if you're a CoH vet. Blocking, for example. You don't block? You die. No questions asked. Either block or get stomped. Blocking doesn't let you attack, and I can't tell you just how much I hate having to sit there with the Block key held down waiting for 2-3 enemies to stop attacking long enough for me to get a shot in. I feel like all of my characters are constantly on the ropes with no opening.

The tutorial is rubbish, gives no information, and pits you against an enemy so powerful he'll waylay you anywhere from ten to twenty times before you wear him down enough to kill him. Thank the stars he didn't have health regeneration or I'd have quit the game immediately.

Another problem I've found is that there are "great powers" and "terrible powers" and no real middle ground. Some builds will be rampantly overpowered because of one or two powers, while other builds are nearly useless. Example: Power Armor is freaking absurd and makes playing other "tank" powersets look like wasted effort. Archery is to Munitions as a shotgun is to a straw and spitballs.

I really, really have a problem with games that have skills/powers that're so much more powerful than the rest of the game that they render the other choices obsolete. It's bad game design.

On top of that, the level-to-zone progression is so ridiculously unclear it's not even funny. Mill City, Desert, Canada, Vibora, Canada, Desert, Mill City, Desert, Canada, Vibora, and no way of knowing where to go next without talking to half the NPCs in the game for some kind of "go here now" quest. Always fun to go to Canada at level 22 and wind up trying to escape level 32 ice demons because you decided to explore.

Furthermore, the gear level drop system is baffling. At level 25 I have 9 pieces of gear for 35+ that dropped off of level 20's. What the ***** am I supposed to do with those and how the hell did they manage to be on the loot table for things 15 levels lower than they are?
