Tbh GW2 isn't really that bad. Its a game that I really enjoyed playing solo or with my friends. The holiday events are frankly quite amazing even though I haven't done the costume brawl.
This does not mean that I condone what NCSOFT did to COH. I bought the game before they announced the closure of COH. Right now, I'm tempted to put in some money to buy extra inventory slots and char slots but the only reason I'm not doing so is the way NCSOFT handled closing of COH.
Anyway I have to give credit where it is due. Anet did an amazing job with GW2 and I really hope NCSOFT wouldn't shut them down in the someday in the future. -
Do people suppose it is SAVECOH's method that isn't working or if it was NCSOFT being too obstinate?
The movement started by ME fans to change ME3's ending seems to have worked at least to some extent. More exposition given to the endings and explanations. -
Thanks for the great Video D_R.
It was very painful to watch the video because I just ended up crying at the first few scenes. I don't have the words to describe the feeling I get from watching the video. I just felt incredibly sad. -
Quote:Thanks for advice Dr Harmony, it is nice to hear from you again since our last trip to Shadow Shard. The archetypes in Champions Online are incredibly limited.
I'd recommend that anyone who tries the game out to dish out the $15 for a month's subscription so they can try freeform characters.
Energy Blast = Force powerset, for ranged blasts with knockback.
The only archetype who uses these is the Impulse, which you'd have to pay for anyway I think.
Kinetic Manipulation in Force would be your best slotted passive for a Blaster type character.
For Energy Melee you could take Burning Chi Fist from Unarmed Martial Arts (a good quick hefty punch with energy effects).
If you liked the Stun aspect of Energy Melee, I highly recommend Sonic Device in gadgets - its a 30-second self buff that makes your next attack do extra sonic damage, and a short duration stun. It creates a big spherical impact on the boosted attack, which looks great for a devastating "Cosmic Punch" kind of idea.
There's no real parallel to Energy Torrent or Explosive Blast. Force Cascade is a very fun all-out blast in Force, very much like what happens when Cyclops opens his visor fully.
Force Detonation is a ranged knockback AoE, but a bit more like Respulsion Bomb in Force Fields than an Energy Blast power.
You wont be able to mimic your character completely, but its pretty easy to create an effective character with knockback blasts and cool punches.
I would give your suggestions a try and see where that takes me. And if that toon works out and the game is fun to play I may try to port over my other 23 characters from COX.
Still... I wish CO adopted an Archtype system similar to COX as it certainly makes things easier to grasp. Blaster = range DPS, Tanks = well..tanks, Scrapper = melee dps and etc etc...
One more question though. How does CO handle falling from a great height? I know toons in COX take alot of damage if they fall from great height but they would not die from it. Does that work different in CO? I like the idea of KB punting baddies off a cliff/skyscraper and seeing them fall to death. -
Maybe I'm to used to COX, I was hoping to re-create my characters in CO but found the Archtypes to be somewhat confusing or limited. My main is a Energy/Energy Blaster type of character but I just can't find something similar in theme over at CO.

Thanks for posting this GG.
This zone is gorgeous, it makes me even sadder to know that we will never see this zone anywhere else except in that video. I recall a thread about where we would live in Paragon City and I think I put Kallisti Wharf as one of my favorite zones. -
I wouldn't settle anywhere in Paragon City/Rogue Isle with all the things going on.
But if forced to settle there and assuming if I have super powers? I'd pick these few places. I prefer coastal areas or those with greenaries or water bodies.
1. Talos
2. Atlas Park (Looks new)
3. Overbrook
4. Founder's Fall
5. Perez Park
6. Eden -
Quote:I appreciate the levelless feel of the game but at times it can get frustrating. Especially when I'm just trying to get to a node of raw materials with the constant respawning of the mobs around me. Its not so bad in Queensdale or Wayfarer's hills. But it is real nightmare when for my elementalist in Charr starter lands. The mobs aggro easily, respawns almost instantly by the time i killed the first one & to top it off the zone is quite deserted. (Maybe less people play charr?)
No, "you" don't. Maybe YOU personally do, but don't generalize. Lots of us are loving the "levelless" feel to the game.
Quote:Personally, I found the game extremely social. I RP in /say wherever I'm at, and I now have a friendlist full of RPers, some of whom I've grouped up with for questing simply so we can continue to RP together. It led to an couple in-character guild invite, so now when I want to do dungeons, I have 2 guilds of people that I enjoy spending time with that I can group up with.
Quote:Well, to be fair? The humans did it to them first. Ascalon and all that area belongs to the charr before the alien invaders showed up and pushed them out of it. Humans just came out of nowhere, took their land and built a big wall to keep them out. That wasn't "your" starting area :P
Bringing my human elementalist to Charr lands was an emotional experience. Seeing the once glorious kingdom of Ascalon brought to ruins & its defenders raised as vengeful wraiths. Although the human king (Eldebrak?) was responsible for such turning them into undead, I can't help but feel it was the Charr that drove humanity to this point.
I finding the elementalist rather challenging to play. Not only that I also found that the traits do not synergize well with each other. Suffice to say, I need to put in considerably more effort to accomplish the same on my elementalist as compared to my Guardian or Ranger. I have played an elementalist in GW1 and the Elementalist in GW2 feels completely different. It feels more like the Warrior in Wow where you are expected to constantly "stance dance" to be truly effective. -
Quote:Just wanted to say I really like the character design and concept behind Praxis. It is very good inspiration, pity COH may not be around much longer.
Well, to be fair, that's the aim of her designPraxis is a villain, a higher-reality god that sees life as meaningless and enough power to blink-out all of existence, were she not trapped by the very creators of all things. The Avatar of Praxis, which is what you see in the pic, is less of a person and more of an... Idol, so to speak. It's an incomprehensible alien consciousness' facsimile of a person. I made her with the express intention to be uncanny, sort of like sticking a porcelain mask on a slime monster.
It reminds me of an extra-dimensional entity whose true form is utterly alien and incomprehensible. But takes on a supposingly humanoid form to either mock humanity or to manipulate them.
Alternatively, it appears humanoid to humans because humans do not possess the ability to comprehend its form in its entirety without going mad. -
I'm glad you liked the animation. But each and everyone of us have our own preference. Doesn't mean either one of us have good or bad taste. We are different.
Anyway - I thought the animation looks okay. I also think its not quite fair to compare this to COH which was made years ago. Even then for its age, the new powersets like Staff Fighting have pretty neat animations imo. Which of course you are inclined to disagree. -
Quote:That pretty much sums up why I am upset. Though there is one more factor for me. Unlike most of you guys, I've only been playing this game for less than 2 years. So there are still alot of content that I haven't seen. Tons of Story-arcs, Giant Monsters, zones haven't explored, tons of TF/SF, Incarnate Trials, SSA, PVP, Build my own Base & AE.For a lot of the people upset, there are two factors.
The first factor is that you seem to assume that people would have had the same reaction no matter when CoH had shut down. Perhaps a few people would, but the problem here is that this shutdown is extremely dramatic. Server populations had been relatively stable for a very long time. Revenue was on a very gradual decline. There were active plans from the dev team for easily a year into the future. A lot of the reaction you're seeing is because the shutdown was not clearly signaled at all. If the game had gone into a visible maintenance mode spiral, far fewer people would be as emotional about it.
The other factor is that CoH is the MMO that a lot of people who don't otherwise play MMOs actually play. That means its the only similar time sink that they indulge in, and when its gone, many of them do not expect to be able to replace it. Some folks spend 2-4 hours a day on this one thing, and have been doing it for 4-8 years. That's a big chunk of a person's time to suddenly have become a vacuum.
But I have severe altisism and my highest level toon is only 33 right now which I suppose is my own fault for taking it easy with COH thinking that it was casual.
I don't expect COH to be around forever but learning that it is going to be gone so suddenly without any warning signs. Just throws me off guard.
Its almost like an end to a beautiful relationship with so much stuff left undone. -
Quote:While I don't have my finger on the pulse of the game. I believe this to be the truth. From my personal experience, I have observed or have friends / SG Mates telling me that the reason for them taking a long absence is mainly because of burnt out.As some pointed out, correlation isn't the same as causality.
And I agree with Uber. It's a pretty weak reason to leave a game because others abused a new system or because how the devs tried to fix it.
If I didn't use the system, why would I care if we get zillions of AE babies or that someone was grinding for skeeball tickets so they could make billions at Wentworths. The lack of grinding is what makes this game so unlike NCSoft's Korean imports. I explained to friends what people were doing in AE and they replied "how is that fun?"
If MA wasn't tied to a box release then it's possible that the devs would have plugged some of the earlier exploits before it's release but it was a box release and they had to get it to stores by the promised delivery date. Also as a minor aside it was also the only box Mac release. I can also understand why it was a box release. The concept of player created content for an MMO was revolutionary idea at the time. There's always been mission modding communities for FPS games but this was a honest to God mission builder. Lets make some noise about it.
I just don't get why someone would leave just because of MA. I can understand the straw/camel/back or five year burnout but not this.
And I don't think this happens only for COH, it happens for WoW as well. I know many guildmates and players who were top notch raiders who simply disappeared after a several months of playing, only to re-appear at the next expansion pack or next game content update. -
Quote:I actually bought GW2 prior to NCSOFT announcing the closure of COX & Paragon Studios as well, might as well play it.If there is one thing I am dissatisfied with, it's that your sense of power doesn't really ever grow in GW2. You never solo 16 enemies at the same time like you can in CoH.
I agree with your above comments. The auto "exemplaring" acts as a double-edged sword. It is good when you want to play with friends who have just started and have significant level difference. And or if you done with your lowbie zone and want to experience another race's lowbie zone.
But it gets REALLY ANNOYING if you are just moving around exploring or farming raw materials for crafting. I can't count the number of times I draw aggro while roaming in Charr (1 - 15) zone when my elementalist is lvl 26.
I wish Arenanet would implement an ingame toggle on whether we want to be auto-"exemplared" or not. -
Quote:Thats true for my case as well. The very reason that it isn't remotely like WoW is the reason why I came back to this game even though I played it sometime ago and stopped it after all my friends left.I can't speak for anyone else on this, but I do play other MMOs, and I like ones that don't follow the mold set by World of Warcraft. Which also includes games that follow the lead of other games, but I digress. It's part of the appeal City of Heroes had for me, in .
Now the Secret World looks intriguing and the theme of it actually draws me in but when I saw the combat, it automatically reminded me of WoW with a heavy dose of Call of Cthulu. -
I just don't get the Korean suits. They just axed COH and replaced it with another of their cloned fantasy grindfest? I played Lineage 1 & 2 before and I absolutely hated it even though the characters looked gorgeous. I even hated quest grinding that was in WoW by the time I hit WOTLK.
I guess it may sell in Korea or parts of Asia where the players don't mind the grind & can stand the lack of originality.
But I can't see that it will do well in the Western Market. Even in Singapore, grindfest mmos are starting to lose their appeal. The playerbase are becoming jaded with MMOs in general and have matured to a certain degree that they expect more. Not to mention people now prefer games that do not hog up as much time and opt to go for a more casual gaming experience.
NCSOFT really needs to understand the market they are trying to pitch their new product to. -
Thanks GG, this is very good read. Especially consumer reactions.
Quote:The continuing work on new expansions (i24) and release of new powersets and in game content led to confidence in the health of the game. Many players came back or subscribed to VIP status as a result of these efforts, and felt particularly mislead by the abrupt and unpredicted closure announcement -
Quote:I'm guessing that fantasy is more widely accepted because various cultures around the world all have their legends & myths of beings with mystical powers and fantastic creatures. Dragons, monstrous creature and god like beings pervade Oriental mythology which might be why the fantasy genre is much more easily accepted. Early Dungeon & Dragon RPGs may have helped in that regard as well.Yeah, I've noticed that. It seems odd to me, not that comic superheroes would be a more American notion, but that the rest of the world would be quite so accepting of games that are, at their core, usually based on medieval European fantasy settings. Maybe it's that somehow fantasy MMOs got in the door first and somehow insinuated themselves in the modern consciousness even of non-European places? I'm not sure that really makes sense, though.
Modern CoH is pretty open to what I think of as decent fits for stereotypes of "super powers" we often see in manga and manga-inspired animated shows. Of course, any cross-cultural appeal that gave us is still probably tied back by the way the the main NPC characters, setting and core fiction are all fairly firmly rooted in American culture. I mean, let's face it, Statesman was practically wearing an American flag. (This is not a complaint, simply an observation.)
Come to think of it, I'm not sure if I have ever read a superhero comic book that didn't originate from North America, but then again I mostly read only comics by Marvel and a little bit of DC/Image. -
Thanks for the efforts Mindscythe, this is beyond cool
-
Not sure if this is a contributing factor to the lower subscription numbers.. but Superhero genre (tight costumes, capes, vigilantism and etc..) seems to be a very AMERICAN thing.
Most people are I know who play COX, DCUO and Champions Online are either Americans or people exposed to Marvel/DC movies & cartoons back in the 80s - 90s and taken a liking to the genre enough to want to make their own version of Superheroes.
As compared to WoW or any fantasy themed MMOs out there. People all over the world seem to be more exposed or can readily accept the fantasy genre despite how saturated and tired the fantasy mmo market is. -
Quote:Yes, pretty much this. Not to mention that prior to Paragon Studio's farewell announcement. You could see the devs hard at work, engaging discussion with the community about future changes, I24 & posting sneak peaks of Tech Knight costume on Facebook.AsWhat bothers me and most others is the sudden yet inevitable betrayal. That the hammer came down so quickly that there's been no coordinated PR effort. It took NC Interactive a week to take down all of the "click here to buy" and "on sale now" info off of the CoH homepage while the NCSoft game and corporate websites still show CoH as a proud member of their gaming lineup and we still don't have any word about compensation or refunds. You would think those details would be part of a sunset a game business plan in place before you announce the end. It seems more like Seattle showed up to work Friday morning and found a voice mail message from Korea telling them to shut down CoH and they'll work out the details later. It's almost as if some underling was assigned the task weeks ago, remembered at the last minute but still hadn't gotten around to prepare a sunset plan and is now back dating everything to CTA.
If COX has been dwindling in numbers, servers becoming ghost towns and no new game content or update from the devs for months and months. Then it is much easier for the community to accept NCSOFT's decision to close down Paragon Studios and COX.
Regrettably this wasn't the case here and it is also why NCSOFT is getting so much flak for the way they handle the closure of the game. -
Likewise, I'm a little tired with the gaming industry as well.
EA in particular disappointed me alot with what they did to ME3 as well as how they butchered Sims series for me.
After COX is being axed I realized my faith in NCSOFT is actually quite misplaced, given the fact that NCSOFT have done the same to Tabula Rasa, Exteel and AutoAssault.
Anyway I might look into Indie Developers or I might just cut down on my gaming tremendously and look real life. There are many other things to do besides video games. Such as traveling & food. -
Ever since the game went FREEDOM last year, I have been facing difficulty in posting in the COH forums. Strangely I am never able to log on to the forums from my home, my PC or my mom's either. Though I could login to the forums and post on my work PC.
I hate to do non-work related stuff on my work PC but this is probably my only chance to say it now before the game finally closes up.
A lot of people have already said it before and said it better than me. COH has become one of my favorite games which I play every night and it is really depressing to find out that it will be gone. Just like that.
I guess what I'm saying is I'm taking this time to thank and appreciate the hardwork that the devs have put in. There is an incredible amount of lore & story in the game that is so much better compared to a whole lot of MMOs out there.
There is also the wonderful community in Virtue, full of helpful and like-minded people for roleplaying storylines/heroes etc..
Gosh, its so hard not to become emotional and its even more hearbreaking to find out that there are so many cool stuff that is coming to us in I24 which will now never come to pass.
It is almost like saying goodbye to a relationship, except that it isn't with a person but with a game/community. There is so much more I have to say but I will stop here or I end up crying and attracting unwanted attention from my colleagues.
Farewell COH and thanks for all the fun that you have provided us.
Quote:Hey gang,
So, I've been updating the portfolio for my work and I wanted to share some videos with you all.
The first one is a video montage I had made for the studio to present the new Issue 24 cutscenes. This is SPOILER HEAVY, if you dare to watch it. The video also shows off new cutscene technology implemented by Black Scorpion, which is Depth of Field.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hjTAI_ozpZY
The second link shows off LUA scripting. This was implemented by our brilliant programming team for Issue 24. The video only shows off a small portion of what we did with it; for example, Arbiter Hawk implemented the new Paladin event in Kings Row entirely through LUA. This scripting language is incredibly powerful and, the best for us, very easy to iterate upon.

What side do you pick more than others?
All factions, depends on the character background. Mostly Praetoria and Blue Side. Red Side is O.K but I hate the layout of the place. Especially Mercy Island... >_<
What play style do you prefer?
Casual, Mostly Solo & Grouping if my SG members are on.
I like the freedom that comes from Solo, there is no pressure and you can go AFK to grab a snack/chat with family members.
What power set(s) do you favor?
Hard to say, I mostly pick corrupters and melee characters. I don't have Dominators, Controllers or Defenders. I almost never pick a powerset based on what it can do but mostly on the feel of it and how it fits the characters I have in my mind. The actual animation of the power is a big factor in what I choose.
What zones do you like the most?
Nova Praetoria / Imperial City / First Ward. I really like that they don't have the giant blue zone walls and there are so much more greenary!
Do you usually play as a male or female (word of hatred) ''toon''?
Both, I have equal number of male and female villains/hero characters.
Views on Role Playing?
I come from tabletop D&D and really miss it. So I participate in Roleplaying whenever I get the opportunity. I would love to get involved with the plot and other characters.
Though it can be hard because I'm an alt-holic and RP seems to be very clique-ish. All the more so since I don't spend a great deal of my in-game time in Pocket D.
Servers?
Virtue -
As stated in my signature - even at 25% discount this still seems awfully expensive. Considering this isn't priority item to purchase like new powersets of costume sets. I think I will pass.

At first I thought I was looking at fan-art from WoW then I realized this was for COH.
Quote:I kind of agree with this statement because I have seen woman behave in the same way.Children and teenagers are bombarded with images that support the idea that women are merely objects of male desire. The constant conditioning is so severe that even women will defend these images because subconsciously (or consciously) they believe they should be objectified.
