Understandably perspective has been lost in the entire episode.

This really was not about COH for NC SOFT. It was more about the new projects Paragon was working on. NC SOFT decided to go in a different direction shutting down the entire studio. COH was just a casualty of war so to speak.

IMHO, NC SOFT made no real effort to work out modern alternative ways to sell the game, it was the traditional pay us the overvalued price or the game is locked away in our vault forever type deal.

Pretty typical of the corporate mentality of today's world, which is something I feel ALL MMO players should take note of before investing the kind of time and apparently real life feelings into any MMO that was invested by some in COH.

It is something you have so little control over and does not have anywhere near the same value to the people that actually make the decisions on how long they are going to allow you to play it, than it does for you.

This is an opportunity for us all to learn this hard lesson on control, lack thereof and what to invest in emotionally when you have no control and the one's that do only care about money and not the emotional impact of the societies built around the games they peddle.

For me it is lesson learned.

The development team and this community deserved better than this from NC Soft. Best wishes on your search.

The next stage is acceptance.

An 8 year old game is a hard sell, and quite frankly why buy the license when you can just start from scratch? Let it go, life goes on.

NCsoft will not hear the end of this not for years to come. Right now the only way to save face in the gaming world's eyes is to sell the City OF IP, but they couldn't come to an agreement after only a few weeks? I call big piles of ********. At best COH earned them what? 50 million over the last 5ish years they've owned it?So what kind of price were they asking for? If they release that I can be pretty damn sure someone will fork it over unless they were asking for something insane like $200,000,000 +

Uhhh... You know, you would have done more damage NCSoft by continuing to play GW2 and just not buy Gems... Right?
You'd do even more damage earning gems through gold and buying when you need there.

Don't forget Ragnarok Online, definitely older than CoH, I believe more than 10 years?

I have absolutely no desire to play any of their games again.
It's not about "hurting" NCSoft...I just refuse to help them.

Well, we wouldn't march out there with pitchforks and torches and lay waste to their offices. I think what they had in mind was financial destruction.

If that was what they meant, NCSoft shouldn't be the only target but also any companies that have an involvement with them such as Nexon. Wouldn't it hurt NC if Nexon decided they didn't want any association with them because their decisions are negatively affecting Nexon's business?

Destroy the game economy? It would hurt the players more than NCSoft, if the game were subbed then there would be more substantial damage.

I still believe there's a legal issue with NCSoft selling virtual goods on a game they themselves advertised as "play free forever". This isn't the same as closing a subscription-based MMO, players who bought stuff from the Paragon Store in August 2012 would have reasonably expected to be able to use those items for longer than 4 months. Depending on how much NCSoft is asking for the licence (assuming they're really open to offers), it might be cheaper to get a class action started instead.

Disappointing news, but I'm inclined to believe that NC didn't try hard enough either.

Who would ever buy another of NC Softs games when they cancel them for the weakest of reasons . They don't want my money so I will never spend another penny on anything them or anything connected to them.

Funny you say that: at lest 3 games in that list have changed ownership. Some of them several times.

So to me assuming they overpriced the IP/accounts/etc is the charitable estimation.
Bullspit. If they REALLY wanted to sell...they'd still be tabling offers. Which brings me to this.....there's been NOTHING out there about other game companies making offers for the CoX ip. Nothing. NDA usually mean you can't talk about what went on in the meetings, but not that "hey, we're attending." can't be announced. Nobody's announced it. At all. Isn't THAT curious?

End of the day? I'm STILL never going to purchase another NCSoft product....or recommend one to anybody I know. I suggest we all do the same.

In all likelyhood, to save face (legally), they did try to sell the game, but attached an unattractive price tag, one they knew would be ignored. NcSoft's history of releasing IPs... Not good. Sad, day for me, guess my Christmas Wish now needs to be a Christmas Miracle.

It's also a lesson on how to use 'legal means to devastate a company that deserves death. Need to sharpen some knives.

Not for NCSoft, it shouldn't.

NC says "seriously, guys, we don't care, we never did, but can we stop pretending we do now?". This doesn't come as much of a surprise. NCSoft's mind was made up months before the announcement was made anyway. It should be kept in mind that just because it was a surprise to us (and our devs) doesn't mean it wasn't the product of much corporate dartboard-ing for months in advance.

Not aware that any of them sold at a premium.

Oh. Hey. Check THIS out. This is probably the reason why NCSoft didn't sell the IP. I copy/pasted this right from the webpage.

Western development confirmed for acclaimed MMO

SEATTLE, WA - SEPTEMBER 13, 2012: NCsoft ®, the world's premier publisher and developer of massively multiplayer online games (MMOs), today confirms its Western expansion plans for Blade & Soul, the wildly successful Asian martial arts fantasy MMO developed by Team Bloodlust, an in-house studio based in NCsoft's headquarters in Seoul. Blade & Soul has already captured the hearts of millions, consistently ranking one of the top games in PC cafés across South Korea since its launch eleven weeks ago, and plans to reach the same level of success and popularity in Western markets.
Blade & Soul brings MMO and RPG gaming communities an online world rich in Asian martial arts, a theme that has traditionally been limited to fighting games. Once Blade & Soul launches in the West, players will have the ability to experience the flowing nature of action martial arts that they have come to love, but will experience it in a modern format blended together with deep story lines and an epic online world populated by millions.
Bringing to life the fantasy style and signature character movement made popular by the classic martial arts adventure films House of Flying Daggers and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Blade & Soul allows players to embrace the essence of historic martial arts combat, set in a beautiful world inspired by the stunning art of renowned artist Hyung-Tae Kim, Team Bloodlust's Blade & Soul lead artist. Kim's strong international manga following and his unique style of blending Japanese anime and Korean art will expand Blade & Soul's appeal to a broad audience.
Exact release timing for Blade & Soul has not been confirmed, but NCsoft is already aggressively tailoring the title for Western players, working closely with Team Bloodlust to ensure the rich Asian martial arts theme stays intact.
For more information on Blade & Soul, visit the official website at www.bladeandsoul.com.

Guess what? Time to destroy this game for the western market.
