TSW refugee migration
I've looked through the link to TSW several times...where is the 3-day trial option? All I see is full enrollment or a PC version plus 30 days of MMO.
Any direction would be helpful. I'm probably staring right at it and not seeing it somehow.
I bought the game and tried it for a couple of days, but already cancelled. I think there is a lot of good stuff in that game, but also there was a lot of "typical" MMO stuff that I wanted to stay away from.
I wrote in another review that I think it would have made a better non-MMO than an MMO. The atmosphere is top notch but by the time I got halfway through the third zone, the endless zombies had gotten to me, as had the WoW-ish dungeons (with "need or greed" rolls). The game's many "solo" instances make teaming really hard, and you can only have a very few quests in your log at a time. I can see why people like the game, but it wasn't for me at this time.

I Beta tested TSW from fairly early on, but elected not to play at launch. Not because I generally disliked the game (although I think the combat system blows), but because the game runs poorly on my three-year-old lappy (which plays CoH, GW1, and other games quite well). So poorly that for an immersion junkie RPvP player like me, the incredible potential of the game went unrealized. Hard to get into it with a framerate that seldom reaches double figures...
I just started the free three-day trial a couple days ago, largely to see if there had been enough tweaks to make the game enjoyable. Mostly, there haven't, and it will probably take a machine upgrade to make the game worth spending money on.
I'm planning to do that as soon as I can afford it, and TSW is one of the reasons. The aforementioned craptastic combat system aside, this game has a lot going for it. The writing is as good as it gets in video games, the cutscenes are superbly voice-acted, the atmosphere is immersive and distinct, and it's a roleplayer's dream in many ways. The setting is pretty much the game I've always wanted (CoH has held me for over eight years because of it's many huge pluses...but I'm actually not at all a fan of teh comic superhero genre...odd, no?).
Look for Irys "StraightRed" Cavendish on Arcadia. And pay no attention to those Templars or Dragons...two insipid sides of the same coin of naivete'.

It is my place to stand.

I was looking into this game the other day. It looks rather bland, but I got a pseudo-Call of Cthulhu vibe from it. The 'skill wheel' system didn't look very interesting as far as the offered skills went, and it seemed that many of the sets I would be interested in were on the outer wheels meaning, as I was given to understand, I'd have to play the character through two entire skill sets I didn't want in order to get to the one I wanted for that character.
|
I'd say that getting a single inner wheel category unlocked (the first two trees) will happen about half way through Kingsmouth. It takes about as long as it used to take from starting to about Frostfire to unlock a single wheel category from start.
Human-only players in a largely mundane setting is bland to me. But the pseudo-CoC vibe I was getting from some of the screenshots and info piqued my interest despite that.

What constitutes "fairly quickly" is rather subjective, I find. Some would say that it's fairly quick getting to 50 in this game, but I still find it to be a tediously lengthy process barring unsavory practices. If it turns out to be fairly quick by my standards, then I imagine typical MMOG players who've played for a week already have all of the skills unlocked. In any case, I don't want to go around clawing things up with the unarmed skills available in order to get to skills that seem to involve more typical unarmed combat.
|
For example, I was focusing on Elementalism and Shotgun (about 30 hours getting me both groups in both weapons, plus a lot of outer wheel abilities), but I found I really couldn't do sustained fights. So I started working on a different weapon, after about 5-6 hours I've unlocked both inner trees in the Rifle set and now I'm combining Elemental abilities with Rifle, or with a different build (which you can store in game), switch to Elemental, Shotgun, Rifle, or any combination thereof (only active abilities of 2 weapons though). I have a couple passives outside of those (fists and blade) at the moment, but I'll have more choice as the character builds. I haven't even got the Aux weapon yet (Rocket Launcher, more to come later).
It is one of the reasons I loved Khelds: I can choose how I play, yet with even more diversity than with Khelds.

One question: how pervasive is the PVP in-game? The only thing I found about it is that there is no open world PVP. Is it easy to avoid? Will I be plagued with spammed duel requests from multiple vectors with no recourse but to place numerous individuals on /ignore? I've run into that issue in numerous games.
|
So you can enjoy the benefits of other's PVP efforts, but you don't have to PVP yourself.

I'm sure they're useful enough, but my particular beef is mostly with the unarmed skills, both of the inner wheels of which seem to involve animalistic fighting - clawing and rending and such. Apparently you have to spend a great deal of time digging your fingers around in someone's innards before you're allowed to just punch them.

Fist weapons in TSW are claws. You don't fight unarmed - every skill has an associated weapon type.

The Templar tutorial does a good job of explaining it (better than I do, certainly).
Goodbye, I guess.

In that instance, knuckles or gauntlets would be my preference. Claws are not "fist weapons" to me. I have a feeling that creating a character is going to be a hard-fought battle.

Note: Claws is also a dps set. All of the sets can be built for dps. That's where the tier 2 abilities really come into play. It's when you start getting into those that the set can be built more for dps or it's other role.
The non-dps roles for the weapons are as follows"
Healing: Blood Magic, Claws, Assault Rifle
Tanking: Blades, Hammers, Chaos Magic
Support: Pistols, Shotguns, Elemental Magic
Another Note: You can (and should) have two weapons equipped. Even if for some reason you only want to actively use one of them the other can improve your statistics.
Here's an article that discusses the different weapons and the synergies between them:

@Inquisitor
The general ingame community kind of sucks.....
I joined the CoH-Refugees channel (/chat join CoH-Refugees) and will live there indefinitely. I suggest others interested in keeping touch might find it easier too.

Thanks for the chat channel, I'll join tonight. I've only been playing for a few weeks, so I'm still in the noob zones, but everybody I've run into have been fairly nice. I've even asked for help a few times on the "Mission Hints" channel and gotten nice, thoughtful replies. It may not be home like my COH supergroup coalition, and it's certainly more lonely, but all of my interaction with the playerbase so far has been positive.

Or you could write a couple of scripts that keep you in your custom channels.
1) Go to your Program Files>Funcom>The Secret World>Scripts folder.
2) Create two files called auto_login and auto_teleport in notepad.
3) Enter your channel commands to each like so:
/delay 5000
/chat join CoH-OOC
/chat join CoH-IC
/chat join CoH-Refugees
/chat join JustMyFriendsChannel
----
The scripts directory is case sensitive and must be Scripts. You will have to create it. Obviously customize it.... but will definitely always be in CoH-Refugees (lowercase o).
Also, I want to establish a cabal. Any suggestions for a name for our cabal? Might as well all noob together.

Yes, I'm also familiar with katar, nekote, various instances of fighting claws in video games and classic kung fu movies, and esoteric fantasy weapons in a similar vein such as thikes. As bladed weapons which are held by the hand, I largely consider them no more a "fist weapon" than a dagger, really.
|
It's entirely possible to say "I do not want sharp-edged or pointy fist weapons" without having to exclude an entire category of fist weapons from being fist weapons.

Downloaded the game, took about ten hours. Finding the character creator confusing. How do I change the gender to male?
I might end up on TSW, but not quite yet. I have a few things that need wrapping up here in Paragon before I go.
