If NCsoft refuses to comply, and the game shuts down, What is our revenge scheme?

That's where you need a little education. This isn't about what I can do to hurt NCSoft. See, long after the end, when the dust has settled and I've moved on from my anger, I'll still have my self-respect to contend with. Don't confuse this with pride, or petty arrogance. This world is still filled with small and family-operated businesses who depend above all else on their customers trust. Those businesses have a lot to feel good about, but so do their customers. When someone does right by you, you ought to do right by them. If a business treats you badly, you ought to take your business elsewhere. Be kind to yourself. Expect better, demand better. These are simple, self-evident principles; and the worst part about this mess is that it's convinced me that the world is filling up with customers for whom respect is neither expected, nor demanded.

I went YEARS without buying a single game from EA, until the new CEO stepped up and point-blank admitted that their reputation for buyout-and-shutdown strategies for studios like Westwood was both accurate and unacceptable. I was HAPPY to open my wallet after that--I had been itching to play UO again and a couple other titles. Boycotting them after what they did to me and my community in Earth and Beyond DID hurt their sales, we know this now, but only because we weren't the only game community doing the boycotting--EA made many enemies of MANY customers of MANY shutdown studios within just a few short years, something NCSoft seems poised to do. I wish those studios under NCSoft well, but I cannot in good conscience support a business who treats its customers and studios (especially a darling of the industry like Paragon Studios) poorly. No industry veteran would tell you that NCSoft did right by them, or by us.

What does realizing that MMOs aren't going to last forever have to do with self-respect?

...sounds a little pridefully condescending, too.

Then go find an MMO run by a small and family oriented business, you're not likely to find one.

As I've said in other posts, don't trust corporations, plain and simple.

NCSoft didn't handle this well, we can all agree on that

But I'm not gonna sit here and cover up my eyes to the truth, this is an old MMO, even by MMO standards, 8 years is a phenomenally long run for one. These kinds of games, more than any other, do not last forever. To even think otherwise is naivety.

Well, good for you. EA is still a big corporation and you shouldn't trust them as far as you can throw them. Look at what's happened with Bioware after it's been acquired by EA.

Caveat emptor. Let the buyer beware, the phrase isn't in Latin because it's new.

Edit: Now, I'm not saying don't boycott. Go ahead, vote with your wallet, you should. But don't go around shouting it, how many times do you see entire groups of people going around saying they'll boycott this game or another? They never go through with it, not enough of them, anyway. So the threat is kinda empty nowadays.

As for this situation right here, people boycotting a company in a region that said company doesn't sell much of anything in anyway isn't the most effective tactic at hurting their bottom line. Not to say you should go out and buy their stuff, just don't go around touting how this is gonna do so much damage to their profits... when it kinda isn't so much.

Because I wouldn't have wanted an avid Tabula Rasa fan to have done it to us.
You know, given how abruptly and out of the blue the CoH shutdown announcement was, maybe that's exactly what happened.

I don't like the word 'revenge'.
While the dictionary definition is 'retaliation for wrong done' (and we certainly do regard closing CoH as a 'wrong' act), it also defines the word 'revengeful' as 'vindictive'.

I am not vindictive.

I have no desire to see people hurt, or to pander to negative issues of either culture or race. That kind of 'revenge' is what has kept half the planet at war for centuries.
What I agree with however is that it would be a mistake to allow NCSoft to get away with repeatedly kicking their customers in the gaming nuts, particularly those customers outside Korea. So I will simply take my business elsewhere.

To one of their competitors.
If I stopped gaming entirely, then that's just one person's revenue they will no longer have. But if I support their direct competitors, then I magically acquire the financial impact of two people : the one whose revenue they have lost, and the one who's now strengthening their opposition.

The way to send a message to a company like NCSoft is to use the only language they seem to understand - that of profit and loss. In shutting down CoH they will have lost me and brought profit to their competitors.

I like this scenario.

This.
The company lost my trust, so I'll give my money to their competitors.

Years ago I always said that if I hit a big lotto I would buy Paragon.

Now I just wish I could hit the lotto, hire the devs and start a new company and make a new CoX.

Now I just need to hit the lotto.....sigh

Either way NC will in no way shape or form EVER get any of my hard earned money.....so suck on that corporate bastards.....

My personal revenge plan involves playing my Necro/Time Mastermind to 50, then making the difficult decision between Torchlight 2 and Borderlands 2. At some point, I may *gasp* try Guild Wars 2, because a couple of my friends have made convincing arguments that it's a very good game, and if I can only play it for eight years, I think I can somehow still live with that.

Judging by the stories I've heard, both internal and external, EA said, "Hey BioWare, we know you're really good at doing your thing, so we're going to give you freedom to do whatever you'd like!"

Then BioWare screwed up majorly and everybody went, "Damn that EA, ruining our BioWare!"

Having Vengeance and Fallout slotted for recharge means never having to say you're sorry.

Personally, I'm with the "grown-up" contingent on this. I won't buy any more NCSoft products.

Jack must be laughing himself silly as players from his old MMO (that ostracized and despise him) end up playing his new MMO.

Wait, maybe Jack orchestrated this whole thing from behind the scenes! Perhaps he is the truest villain of all?

As to the topic... I intend to do nothing. No revenge is needed. Yeah it sucks, yeah I'm kinda pissed, but I'm a grown *** man. I have more important things to worry about. I can say I won't buy anymore NC products... but it wouldn't take an intentional boycott from me for that to occur. Secret: I don't even like MMOs. I like CoH.

+1 for truth. Often the best revenge really is living well. Above and beyond that, I see no real need to exert myself, In my opinon those in power in Korea will manage to do in themselves far beyond anything I could dream of if their present arrogence is any indication.

Yeah, there are a few weeping "poor Bioware" types around, but the Tortanic is very much a Bioware failure.

If you are willing to harm a company criminally for making decisions within its rights, then you've gone a little too far. It may be time to step back.

Perhaps you should see about living in Ultra Mode instead. Put that energy into something real, where you can be a real hero.

Success is the best revenge.

I wish great success to the Devs and all the employees of Paragon Studios: may they get to work on new and exciting projects that are at least as cool as our beloved City of Heroes.

I didn't even know the term still existed. Last time I heard "computer science" it was in high school where the course taught us to program in Basic on our brand new 7k Commodore Pet with its state of the art cassette tape drive.

Actually, what I'm finding more disturbing is several examples of what the OP might mean by hacking have been put forward and I seem to be the only one who imagined a machete might be involved....
