Welcome aboard...almost. I'll give you some of the usual advice for new players now. Just to save time you understand.

1. read everything: there is a lot of information that gets thrown at you as you start to play. Take your time with it.

2. try everything: You'll find an almost insane amount of customization and playstyles available in this game. It might take you some time to find out what works best for you.

3. Ask: In game and here and on the forums. We're a pretty friendly and helpful bunch.

4. There is no 'ONE AND ONLY WAY' to play this game. If it works for you and doesn't grief any one elses enjoyment, go for it.

YEAH.. no idea where they came up with that but YEARS ago the two were combined into one and anyone that previously had access to only one . had access to both. I can't recall exactly when this took place but it was somewhere around the time of issue 6 or 7 when we got the PvP zones. Our available slots per server was increased to 12 and for one price of $15 a month all players could create characters and play both Blue and Red side. Now you can even include the Praetorian Zones (gold) side.. after a one time fee to gain access through Going Rogue a player can use all three sepearte worlds.

It was when they released Good vs Evil on September 29, 2006. From then on everyone got both "games" in one purchase.

Nope. When I joined, I had the option of buying CoH or CoV for $15-17 (can't remember exactly), or GvE for $20. It seemed like a no-brainer to me, so I bought GvE. When I started my second account, over a year later, I still had the same options.

The conversion of all accounts to cover both games, and making it so that any purchase of one included both came after NCSoft's purchase of the game from Cryptic - I'm fairly certain it was about the same time that Paragon Studios launched as a dedicated studio for CoH only.

Seems everything about MMORPG.com is out of date these days. I can't remember the last time I got a newsletter from them even.

Nah, it was at least 2 years after that. GvE was just a bundle pack.

Both games in one purchase, yes. IF they bought the GvE edition.

If they bought just City of Heroes or just City of Villains they only got the game they bought. Both standalone versions of the game were still available for purchase and only got you access to that game.

Additionally, for anyone that had only City of Heroes or only City of Villains the games were merged in July 2008.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

I think what Forbin meant was that all new box releases (Such as Architect and Going Rogue) included both City of Heroes and City of Villains.

ARE YOU CRYING?

There is no crying! THERE IS NO CRYING REDSIDE!

Westin Phipps was my contact, and he made me do all sorts of nasty things-- and that was when my parents had come online all the way from Michigan just to team up with me. And did I cry?

NO.

And do you know why?

Because there's no crying in the Rogue Isles. THERE IS NO CRYING REDSIDE!

No crying!

On the contrary, there is tons of crying on redside. The dominated, helpless, pathetic citizens weep in dismay at the carnage we leave in our wake. It is true that villains do not week. We have victims to do that for us.

Well, here's some starter tips for when you download the game:

1.) Start with a Scrapper or Brute, they're the easiest to play and will help you get into the swing of things.

2.) Use Help Chat if you're lost or don't know what you're doing.

3.) Do the Tutorial Missions from either Doctor Graves or Twinshot once you hit level 5.

4.) Do not do the Death From Below trial until after you've gone through the low level contacts at least once. People will farm that trial to quickly get to the higher levels but on your first character, you'll want to experience everything.

5.) Avoid the Hollows. If the game wants you to talk to David Wincott, don't.

6.) Do the various low level contacts, if you're a hero, try to avoid the older content as alot of it didn't age well.

7.) If you're a Hero, at level 10 do the Positron TF in Steel Canyon.

8.) If you see anyone who's name is in Yellow, they're self designated as Helpers so they should help you out if you have any questions.

With a sales pitch like that, it's really is weird that more people don't want to play Villains

... Or some form of Defender or Corrupter. On some servers it becomes very easy to find a team with a support-type people just aren't on all that often. The real advantage here is that team-friendly types get a much better idea of the overall mechanics of the game whereas Brutes and Scrappers really don't have to have any awareness of what else their teammates might or might not be doing.

How would a new player know whether content is new or old?
As a rule of thumb, villains get sensible, well-written stories that play out within a single zone that matches their level range.

Most of the blue-side zones will be filled with missions and contacts that are nothing but poorly-written time sinks. New players would to well to get to level 12 or so and then visit contacts in Faultline. When Faultline is tapped out, figure out how to get to Striga Island and then to on to Croatoa.

Welcome aboard! I hope you like it!

Here's the best advice I can give you...
Don't follow anyone's advice! (except for that)

Listen, sure... but, when people start telling you to start with this or that... they're only speaking for themselves.
Hey, I started as a Blaster... Loved it and never stopped playing.
We're all different... and this game, more than any out there today, recognizes that and gives us plenty to choose from and enjoy.

Again, don't just follow my advice, but I highly recommend just imagining a character and then trying to see if you can achieve it in game with the power choices... and go and play that.
This game is great when you have an interest in your character... Like a movie you're really in to, as opposed to just kinda watching it.

Of course, there are a ton of ways different people enjoy playing this game, so whatever your thing is... I hope you find it and enjoy it here.

THAT right there is probably the best advice you will get. Don't let anyone influence what you play.. If I had to suggest anything at all I's say create a few characters and play them to see how you enjoy what they are capable of. I started with MasterMinds on COV and Scrappers on COH. Now I think I can honestly say I enjoy playing my Blasters more than anything Blue side and my Corruptors red side. Now you are listening to a confirmed and dedicated Altoholic so to be honest I have at least one Fifty level in almost every available AT. I enjoy the challenge of learning new strategies and tactics needed to excel with all of them. As for how to play or what .. same advice try it all and decide what YOU like. Solo fora bit to get that feel of being an independent hero that can deal with a crisis alone. Hook up with teams for the friendships you can make along with the satisfaction of doing YOUR job well and contributing to the groups success. Again I do both.... in fact on some characters I have dual builds so i can maximize the things I do to benefit a team or, when solo, maximize my own defense and damage.

Most important is whatever your doing.. is it enjoyable? If you are a VIP you are paying to play this game and as long as it doesnt violate the TOS you have every right to play whatever way you enjoy. Premiums and F2P Players are not shelling out monthly fees but are probably spending cash in the on line store so they have the same right to ENJOY their experience. Have fun and if yu have a question about anything in game or here.. just ask. We have a great group of people here that are always willing to help out

The "tutorial" missions from Twinshot/Graves are useless as far as tutorials go - heck, one of the things they try to teach you is how to train, regardless of the fact that you can't even talk to the contacts until you've trained at least four times. On top of that, they're HORRIBLE. Those two arcs are the ONLY content in the game I refuse to ever do again.
The Hollows, on the other hand, is some of the BEST low level content in the game. Why would you direct people away from it?

This. I love the hollows. I'd say do it all the way through, from start to finish. One of my favourite zones.

Interestingly, I quite enjoyed the Twinshot arc and the Graves' one at least had the hilarious "Oh no! You've been mindwiped too!" scene.

The Hollows, on the other hand, I can't stand and avoid like the plague after my first time through.

I think this just proves that everyone has different tastes and new people should explore around and see what suits them.

wall of textonite!!! *cringe* lol thanx guys well i tried hero.. kinda felt weird to me.. so i made a villian. Toxic Infernal - Magic Corrupter. lvl 7 on Freedom server (which i njoy playing a lot now since i dont lag from downloading the rest of the game haha.. but tempted to make some sort of melee too.. just i cant make up my mind as so what his origins/powers should be. so many choices even in the free version. i can literally sit for more than an hour trying to get the perfect look for my hero/villian.

another question.. does your origin really make a diffirence in the powers you'll have access too ? doesnt really feel like it at the moment ?

Posted

Your origin has some, but not a huge effect on your game. It changes which Dual- and Single-Origin Enhancements you can use (which don't differ in effect based on origin,) you get a weak ranged attack to begin that is chosen by origin (Trick Arrow players who don't have any other source of fire or energy-typed damage often go Magic or Natural because aforementioned powers provide that,) the titles available at level 25 reflect your origin, and the NPCs who match your origin will have differing text during the "Origin of Power" storyline.

Oh, and what you take from Trapdoor in Mender Ramiel's arc will depend on your origin, but that's way down the line (level 50.)
