Same here. I had never even heard of the book series before the show aired and I picked up all the books shortly after the first season ended. I was amazed at how faithful the show was to the novel A Game of Thrones, and I was so psyched after reading it that I immediately started A Clash of Kings against my instincts.

I frankly can't see how they're going to fit everything from A Clash of Kings into the second season, let alone pulling in some material from the third book.

Clearly if they follow the general path MentalMaden mentioned they're simply going to start trimming out some of the (hopefully) least meaningful bits of the story. I imagine if they drop several of the supporting characters involved they'd be able to ignore sizable portions of the books.

I really enjoyed Episode 2.

Especially:

1. Pyke. A pitch perfect representation of that part of the book. Balon was great and Yara (Asha) while not how I'd pictured her was an interesting and I think, a successful take on the character.

2. Arya and Gendry. Great chemistry between the two. The other recruits (young and old) were done well too.

3. Tyrion's scenes were great as usual, especially sending Slynt packing to the Night's Watch. Also his back and forth with Cersei over the death of their mother sheds some important light into his motivations and demons.

4. Gilly and Sam and Ghost. Nice work on the dire wolves for a tv budget.

This season looks incredible. Movie quality cinematography and again surprisingly good child actors.

I would go into the few shortfalls the episode had (Ros and Littlefinger), but overall it was a very strong episode and it overcame such a small scene anyway.

There have been other fantasy stories where a girl like Arya tries to pretend to be a boy but I've never seen one where a male friend like Gendry blindly confronts her with her ruse and bluntly challenges her to "prove" her manhood the way he did. I thought it was a very funny scene and well acted by both of them.

I love how even though Tyrion is sly and devious he's still probably one of the most moral and empathic characters in the show. It's clear that he draws the line at things like killing babies, and it seemed like when Bronn gave him a less than "nice" answer about that subject he realized that Bronn was not exactly the most "like-minded" associate he could have.

What house has the shark as it's sigil?

Posted

Where did you see that, Antistar? At the top of my head I can't think of a house with a shark sigil. The Kraken is Greyjoy, the trout is Tully, the merman is Manderlay but I can't say I remember reading about a house and a shark sigil. Will do a bit of research and see.

I don't recall a shark sigil either, but I admit that at some points in the books there are so many houses and sigils thrown at you, it is entirely possible it's in there and I missed it.

I've heard the show is going to get at least a 3rd season on HBO so if Sir. Arthur Fonzarelli has already made an appearance we've got a long way to go despite the shark-sigil.

And it was also confirmed that season 3 will be the first half of Book 3.

I think it probably helps a lot when the author is a professional screenwriter.

And it will end at an event referred to as "RW". I wonder what that could be?

That's the logical place to leave it.

Agreed. The RW as a season finale? Genius.

Hell, even if they decide to cancel the after that, it would be a great place to end it.

I wonder too.

The article says it will 'likely end with the RW' not that it's definite. Is it the perfect place to end a season? Oh yes.

It's troll worthy to end the season there, but I can't think of anything that would keep people frothing with anticipation of the next season more than that scene.

I approve heartily. The gnashing of teeth of nerdrage will be hilarious.

Loving the new season so far. I made it through the first 4 books during the offseason.

Also, with the changes that are being made -- remember that even though GrrM isn't penning the episodes personally (well, he wrote ep. 9) that he is involved in the writer's room for the show when they plan these things out. I imagine he has a great deal of say regarding any changes or added scenes, and I also believe that changes do need to happen to fit everything in to 10 episodes.

Loved how the wolves looked. They got big.

From what I understand this show is getting great ratings numbers for HBO. If I had to guess even though this show is currently only guaranteed a third season I wouldn't really be surprised if it goes longer than that. It's probably one of those things where they can't announce any more than one season of renewal in advance.

Even though HBO "formally" announced that there would be a Season 3, sources within HBO have apparently told the cast to expect a 9 month shooting schedule to film both Seasons 3 and 4 consecutively.

Also, the ratings are up over last season (which were already high for a HBO program), but more tellingly the foreign buys were enormous for this show due to the international appeal of the books. Basically, season 1 was profitable despite the high production costs before the first episode even aired.

This is a huge gravy train for HBO, and they aren't going to stop it any time soon (even if production costs are rising).

Yep, I don't see the ratings dropping on this until season 5, unless they make some big mistakes along the way. Season 5 could likely be slow or frustrating if not handled very, very well. I imagine there will be some major cuts, because I don't think they're going to want to drag out Feast and Dance over more than one season. I see (most of) those two books being combined into season 5 and, hopefully season 6 will pick up with Winds of Winter.

From what I understand it's a contractual thing with the producers. Not a road block or anything, but something about the wording of their deal that just needs to be renegotiated before they can make season 3/4 consectutive shooting known.

Not sure I'd expect that.

They need to carefully pace so they do not out run the published material, and given GRRM's writing rate, that would be a real concern.

City of Heroes was my first MMO, & my favorite computer game.

R.I.P.
Chyll - Bydand - Violynce - Enyrgos - Rylle - Nephryte - Solyd - Fettyr - Hyposhock - Styrling - Beryllos - Rosyc
Horryd - Myriam - Dysquiet - Ghyr

Inflyct - Mysron - Orphyn - Dysmay - Reapyr - - Wyldeman - Hydeous

That's true of course, but they have to balance that with boring the viewers with a lot of new characters and storylines that aren't directly related to the main characters already.

They might have Feast and Dance spread over two season (still they would certainly combine them, they aren't going to give some of the star characters a whole season off and then ask the audience to go back in time the following year) but I can't see them going any more than two at most. So one season or two, GRRM still has to get cranking on the remaining books.
