Book 5 hit paperback, like, a month ago. At least, that's when I got mine from Amazon.

So what did people think of last night's episode?

One of the highlights for me was Brienne. I think Gwendolyn Christie nailed the character, and I loved how she towered over Cat (and Renly) when they were walking together. No CGI here, just a 6' 3" actress!

Tyrion setting his plans in motion in King's Landing is fun to watch, and Pycelle getting thrown in the dungeon is a bonus!

Theon's baptism was cool too.

Finally, Yoren gave a good account of himself, and Lommy Greenhands met his end. At least he served a purpose by giving Gendry an alibi, although if anyone had a description of the boy the story wouldn't wash. Lommy is scrawny and blond, whereas Gendry and has a head of Barattheon black.

Brienne!!!!! Absolutely perfect. There may be one actress on the planet that could do her justice and I think they found her. Can't wait to see more from the Maid of Tarth.

The scenes on the Iron Islands are playing out to be the best of the season. (And oddly were probably my least favorite reading....good job Dave and Dan) Theon's struggle with loyalties (while a bit different from the books) was very well done.

Tyrion's plan was played out wonderfully. Pycell losing the beard was one of my favorite in the books and now the show.

The season is ramping up! Is it Sunday yet????

I'm surprised we haven't seen Bran's little swamp friends yet, and I'm beginning to wonder if they will be written out altogether.

I'm also surprised Tyrion's plan for dealing with an invasion hasn't been set into motion yet.

How many episodes are there this season? Maybe there's more than I think and I'm worrying for nothing.

There's still time for Jojen and Meera. I don't think they can write out the Crannogmen because of their importance to Bran's story.

10. I think they're going to keep Tyrion's battle plans under wraps until they are put into motion to make it more dramatic.

From what I understand, there is a pretty hard and fast number of 10 episodes per season and due to budget no wiggle room even though they'd like to increase to 12 or so.

Some quick thoughts from last night (nothing spoilerish):

Gwendolyn Christie is off to a really good start as Brienne. She definitely seemed to handle herself well, and they did a pretty good job with the makeup. I mean, this is a woman who is pretty much described as something of a horse in a woman costume. I think her height and some of the camera angles they used made her seem enormous. Also, her voice is remarkably deep. This is good casting.

Margaery Tyrell is gorgeous.

Tyrion is continuing to settle into his role. This is the most enjoyable part of the show. I'm glad they've kept the hill tribe people around. (I know they're still about in the books, but this is the first time we've really seen them this season.)

I love how they're handling Bran's wolf dreams. And we finally got a bit of insight into what those chains the Maesters all wear mean. The books are quite detailed on this, but I don't think it's really been brought up on the TV show.

The Arya story seems a little rushed, but I understand the need for this. I don't remember that conversation she had with Yoren (Joren?) from the books, but it's likely I've forgotten more about the books than I remember (they're just so dense). And it is rather important to her as her story progresses. Loved it.

Mmm I enjoyed it!! I like how they are covering the majority of the characters. Not really a fan of the black vs lannister location, just wasn't feeling it - though it was acceptable

I'd look for the reeds next ep.

That discussion isn't really in the books. It seems they are just giving her an "origin story" for her death list. I think it's an improvement as an addition, much like some of the Greyjoy stuff as well. Edit, removed some of my post, forgot which thread I was in......sorry.

Not cast for this season and may be completely out of the series. It's unknown at this point, except they aren't in Season 2.

That at least 'splains why I don't remember it.

As far as the Greyjoy stuff goes, Theon seems a bit more tormented over his current life's direction than he did in the books. This actually does make a lot of sense, though -- you don't stay with people and grow up with them for 9 or 10 years and not be affected by them at all.

Still watching through Season 1. Gotta admit, the queen plays the game well. Eddard...not so much.

Littlefingers needs to have a fair bit of iron added to his diet.

Gotta wonder if Jason Momoa is getting a bit typecast. First he was Ronon on SG: A, then Conan, now a not-Mongolian. Granted, he does play the part extremely well.

Vaerys's golden crown. Nicely over the top. What did that fop think was going to happen when he threatened the Khan's...oops...Khal's unborn child?

Edit - Although, I just realized something...that whole scene had a bit of wrongness to it. The melting point of gold is close to 2000F. That was just a cooking pot of soup and those chains melted that quickly? Granted, that probably wasn't anywhere near "pure" gold, but even tin has a melting point of close to 450F. What would that stuff have to be cut with to get a melting point low enough that such a small fire in such a limited time frame to melt it?

The point was made last season. Let's just assume the fire is hot enough to melt gold, it still would have taken way longer to melt the chains. They're not going to show Viserys sitting there being held by the guards for however long it takes. They sped it up for dramatic effect.

Viserys is actually quite drunk when he barges into the Khal's tent. I don't think there was a whole lot of "thinking" behind his actions other than "ME WANT NAOW!" He did seem to sober up quickly when his arms got snapped like twigs, but I think this is understandable with the adrenaline rush.

As far as the gold chains melting -- creative license. I was okay with this.

Apart from the dramatic effect/creative license explanation we can always fall back on the "this story is based in a fantasy setting" excuse. The planet these characters live on has dragons, magic and a goofy winter/summer seasonal cycle. For all we know their version of "gold" in this fantasy universe melts at much lower temperatures. *shrugs*

Turns out the "nitpick issue" I currently have with this show/story is how "The Wall" can actually serve as an adequate barrier to all the wildness of the north when it's flanked by open oceans on both sides. I suppose the idea of just sailing a boat around the ends of the wall never occurred to anyone. Did the Romans have the same problem with Hadrian's Wall?

Some do actually and have for years. Osha and her crew got over or around the wall somehow in season/book 1. The wall keeps a flood of wildlings (and in the past things) from coming south. Also the wildlings (until recent events) were not organized into large groups or armies (for the most part) so large ships and such aren't available because there is no need. So only small boats etc are available so the "leakage" from north of the wall was always managable. While there are some tribes of wildlings they are more territorial and unorganized, I think there is really only one area even considered a city/township. And for the most part the wildlings really had no desire to cross over (unless its to scavage then head back) as they see the southerners as weak kneebenders and enjoy what they consider their freedom. Thus the reduction in the size of the Night's Watch and shutting down all but three of the castles.

The concern now is exactly the fact that something is causing the wildlings to organize and to want to come south. Is it an offensive reason or are they acting defensively. That's the mystery of the first few books.

In both the books and the TV show, one gets the impression that the Wall isn't there to keep out humans--that's just an added bonus for those that don't have boats and can't swim. I guess it does well against Snarks and Grumpkin.

Yep I can accept the general idea that for hundreds of years the wildlings were unorganized and the Wall alone had likely been enough to keep them contained, along with the Snarks and Grumpkin.

But clearly The Wall always suffered from the fatal flaw that it could be bypassed with a decent naval force and/or enough effort going over or under it. As you say the story's been building up the idea that the wildlings are becoming organized, and it almost seemed a matter of time before someone would seriously take advantage of the Wall's static position. I mean if the Germans could bypass the strong points of Maginot Line why couldn't a bunch of wildlings eventually do the same thing given hundreds of years to figure it out.

It's also important to note they are way behind Westeros in terms of technology. They don't use iron weapons (unless stolen) and are still at best bronze age in terms of progression (and that's only a handful of tribes). So what would seem easy for a Westerosi, isn't true for a wildling.

As Atter said, the wall was originally built to keep "things" out, not people. The small influx of those that did come over was easily handled or accepted by Westeros. Now it's a problem though, because they seem motivated.

Regarding the wall and the wildlings --

If you go back and listen to all of Osha's dialogue in the first season, it's very loaded with hints of what's going on north of the wall. She and her little band of wildlings weren't there for pillaging -- they were FLEEING and heading "as far south" as they could possibly get.

She also told Bran that Rob "should be turning his armies north."
