Paragon Studios is working on a new MMO

Television moved to Paragon's new project. This was stated by Zwillinger during the Ustream where new programmer/engineer Neon Walker was introduced to us.

So....you have a friend in BABs?

I've seen people on Underground trials shoot at the wrong bomb, stand next to a bomb while shooting another bomb, run past a bomb, teleport to a bomb, run pets past a bomb, and try to solo a bomb (unsuccessfully). Until now, I didn't think that was all the work of a single player.

Uh, i would agree that *some* people want to make their own unique characters, but every single time i log in and go somewhere with many players i see dozens of examples that demonstrate that there are many people who really don't want to make unique characters.

Personally i do prefer to make unique characters, but i have no illusions about the player of V3g3ta SS7's Energy/Energy Blaster aiming for uniqueness. Or that Katana Scrapper named Deathp00l dressed in red and black. Or the 80,000 other copies of present and past popular fictional characters.

None of which bothers me as long as i can make my character unique.

i think it will be a fantasy MMO. WoW is finnally getting to be "old news" in the gamer community(took long enough) and the burst of would be competitors to that game have long since fizzled due to poor design choices or support(DDO) or really bad design choices forced onto the dev team by marketing(LOTR online) Such that, it may actually be feasable to create a fantasy game that could draw players away from WoW now.

Such a game would include things like:
Faster paced play- fighting larger groups of foes, especially solo, with a fairly wide array of melee and magic "powers"
Elimination of "skill tree" and hardline classes replaced by AT with various powersets instead.

basically, CoH with swords and fireballs, vs dragons, ogres, orcs etc instead of family mobsters and crey power tanks.

now obviously it wouldnt be a copypasta of game engine/systems design, but a lot could be borrowed and the basics of CoH are obviously fun and successful so it really isnt a stretch to think they could apply a lot of what they learned and have done here into such an atmosphere.

Also of note:
ever notice how detailed the grass and woods are in the surrounding hills of first ward? the texture detail put onto rocks and stone walls there?

Ever think maybe that the animations for some of Kinetic melee set's powers could also be for magic casting or summoning?(just add glowie arcane symbols in the air)

Animals- animations and models

Titan weopons- for a set where people were repeatedly requesting laser swords, mailbox stuck on a tree branch, stop signs etc, we sure got a lot of magic swords, more swords, and axes. And one railroad sign.

Reworked water including the exceedingly rare sound overhaul.

There is countless examples of stuff that could port right into a fantasy MMO. All of this is circumstantial of course, and i am sure a lot of the recent stuff wasnt made for "that other new thing" and brought here as a shared resource.

Or was it.

being able to develop stuff for a new IP and write it off in an existing successful game would sure cut into that whole "cost of new stuff" thing others have pointed out above. indeed, it is a scary time to make a new game, the platform preference has flailed about wildly in the last few years. makes it a bit easier to eat that cost and swallow that fear when you can write it against an existing, earning product.

Thats my 2 cents of speculation anyway

Yes, I do.

Of course, I'd played with him before he was BAB and after he was BAB, but before I knew he was BAB. Confuses even me if I try to stop and figure that one out when I'm tired.

I actually put things together based on some in-game conversations from before he went to work on CoH and information I gained after he went to work on CoH.

Many long-time/old-time Justice players had teamed with him and he seemed to get a delight in dropping clues as to who he had teamed with. When he said he'd teamed with me and outside of a Hami Raid, it narrowed things down quite a bit for me since I had gotten to a point that I rarely teamed at that time except for Hami Raids.

Chris has several friends on Justice as well as other servers, especially those that have had a chance to visit with him at the HeroCon events. I have a few other FB friends that are current or former CoH Devs or OCR folks and one of the things I insist on is that I don't ask them anything about the game. Of course, aside from 2 real life friends and 2 Justice players the only people on my FB friends list are people I've actually met face to face and because of the game.

Being rather socially inept, I consider myself lucky that so many of these people consider me a friend.

I was originally going to say Tarantulas because he was a great character...however, he did "lose" to Megatron in the end so...

Then again, it wasn't really Tarantulas' fault...darn Ravage got trix'ied by Megatron while Megs was in jail.... :P

Man love the series.

Oooooh...

Nice

See Liberty is so cool we don't have devs playing on our servers! (or do we?!?! bum bum bum...)

I'd like to just talk to devs as people and not "what's in i25?!"

Don't get me wrong I'd still ask that for fun

There's nothing saying that the new project doesn't fall within the "City of..." franchise.

(Bad Assumption #5: Not made by Johnny_Butane, but by others in this thread: There's also nothing stating that said project was necessarily an MMO or a PC game for that matter. While I posted my iPad comment in jest, this IS a scary time for any studio to try a multimillion-dollar PC title. PC sales are flat and PCs that would handle a high-end DirectX11 title well are not entering the market fast enough to match the growing costs of developing these high-end titles. You may want to mitigate costs by developing cross-platform, lowering system requirements so it works across a wider array of PCs, or keep your IP alive by developing products with your IP in alternate markets until things seem less stormy.)
The work postings for Paragon (under Mountain View) specifically mention the project is a 'next gen MMO' and 'new IP':

Oh, there are times I've wanted to ask things, but I refrained so as not to push the friendship issues.

And then I waited for the next HeroCon or M&G or Pummit and then asked the questions that had built up.

If it isn't Superhero related, count me out.

This has been my only MMO for 7 years, tried all the rest and either can't stand the theme or the gameplay is lousy.

Yeah, while i like the current Dev team quite a bit, you should remember who the studio that actually made CoH was... i'll just say none of the games they've made since have really appealed to me.

Now, the current team has done a fantastic job (in my possibly biased opinion) of expanding on the original game, particularly in the gameplay and aesthetics. The storylines have occasionally been a bit hit or miss, but there were some real stinkers in the release material. One thing they have definitely improved upon is understanding the mechanics and engine of the game, as well as establishing a rapport with their playerbase.

So yeah, i'll probably try any other game put out by Paragon Studios, but games by the studio that made CoH? Not so much.

I'd check out any MMO they put out. I've never found a fantasy MMO that I wanted to stick with despite the fact that that's a genre I really like.

Thanks for the update. The last few listings I'd seen omitted mentioning "MMO", referring to "game." Made me wonder.

"New IP" though.... that's really interesting.

I know I am being overly negative, but it makes me sad that they are not doing COH2.

I especially can't get excited without knowing what the 'NewIP' is.

*sigh* DC game is meh....

Marvel game is not going to let you create a character....blech

I really want COH2.

It doesn't really matter to me what the new IP is. All that matters is that CoH essentially has no future.

A new [insert 4 legged vanity pet] a month in addition to variations on melee weapon sets and martial arts plus whatever they can kludge together for issue content...from now until whenever they decide to shut down the servers, plus whatever more forms of downsizing (like loss of EU localization) that happens along the way? Yeah, no thanks. CoH deserves better than that. It deserves a proper sequel.

It's not being overly negative when the studio has apparently decided that something else is their future. Part of the reason I was willing to freely spend money on the market was because I thought it could only help the chances of a CoH 2. But Arcana makes good points; CoH 2 almost impossible, especially when they're apparently also working on two other projects. In light of that I don't see the point of supporting the game when it's really not working towards something greater.

All of this talk of other projects, the service downsizing for EU and the general direction the game seems to be going in post F2P (and to an extent post GR), has left a real bad taste in my mouth. Even the Pummit can't raise my spirits.

Fortunately, it has always seemed to have a present.

I would guess that the reason they are not doing COH 2 is that whoever is paying for it thinks they have to use a particular genre to make more money. Fantasy or SciFI I would think.

Of course, they might just be excited over whatever this new Ip is, but I want COH2.

I have paid a monthly fee on two accounts for many years to support first cryptic, and now paragon. Even when I had no time to play I gladly paid monthly to give them more money to work with.

But I fear that if this 'new ip' is not my cup of tea I will have to move on, and it makes me sad.
