Would you use Paragon Points to buy Epic/Power Pool customization?
Abso-bloody-lutely not.
They started the power customization project, but didn't finish. We've gotten the "We know" from them, and they keep putting it off.
I'll buy something else if they say "The money's not there, so funds for this are earmarked to get this done." I'll buy extra customizations when they do finish it, like I do for some costume pieces or did for titan weapons. But just to pay to turn hasten or superspeed's eyesore effects off? No way, man.

If you've only played an AT once (one set combo) and "hate" it - don't give up. Roll a different combo. It may just be those sets not clicking for you.
While CoH Civil War is forming up here, one camp OK with purchasing APP/EPP Customization (or eating babies, whatever it takes) and the other demanding it be free, there is a special takeaway here; a good portion of CoH's players vehemently want this done ASAP.
I believe this has been brought up, but I asked this very question on facebook, referenced this thread, and the response was basically "We know its wanted, but we have to find the time for it." (paraphrased) It's been 6 issues now since Power Customization was left unfinished, there are very few other suggestions or requests that would spur this much discussion and people basically begging for it to be done. War Witch, Positron, Dink, Tunnel Rat, whoever it takes, please please please find the time. |
All of this. They should have already found the time as most of us would rather have this than new auras, or whatever else they are working on. This is one of those times where I would use curse words to emphasize how bad this ball has been dropped.
I want it for free, but if the only way I can get it is to pay for it I will. Yes it should be free to VIPs at the least. If must be give us color change for free, and charge for alternate animations or effects (electricity instead of fire for hasten).
No matter what, this really should be at the top of the list of things that need to be done.

It doesn't (really) matter how this gets done - but it's very strongly desirable to a wide swathe of the player-base that it get done - promptly.
Probably not beause that's a step too far IMO

I have an idea, kinda like a bake sale.
Devs, use the frisbee tech to release the Big Red Ball on the Paragon Market. Use proceeds from it to speed up development of Power Customization 2.0.
There, we're still paying but its kinda backhanded.

I will repeat myself from earlier in the thread: "Trying to find the time" should no longer be an issue. Let's get this on the schedule, please?
@Winter. Because I'm Winter. Period.
I am a blaster first, and an alt-oholic second.
I read the whole thread, I understand what each side is saying. In the frustration and anger of the posts I can see both sides and their reasonings...
I also recall, with my very very bad memory, that when a poster once asked if we could have power customization *at all* we were told a flat out "No." That it could not be done.
When it came out I wasn't a huge reader of the forums, but as a player it was my understanding that what they released was the finished product.
Granted, the power pool customization request has been positively huge since. The Devs are quite aware we want it. Some are willing to pay, some are dead set against it. It comes up at any time the Devs open themselves up for any kind of public questioning.
Would I pay? I honestly do not know. Probably, unless the cost was prohibitive, like on the leprechaun pet. Not a guarantee.
Would I be happy about having to pay? I'm not happy paying $40 for a tank of gas when I have to fill up. I'm not happy shelling out $11.50 for a movie ticket for one person. I really hate spending $3.68 for a gallon of milk. I dislike spending money in general, so no, I wouldn't be thrilled.
What ruffles my feathers, though, is the Devs are very aware this is a Much Desired Feature and don't seem willing to find time/make time to include it on the schedule. I've waited almost 6 years for Staff Melee. I'd rather they shelve any "ooh new shiney cool idea" and stick with looking through requests of highly desired items (backpacks, quivers, power pool customization, waist capes for male widows) and fulfill some of those.
Pretty please with hot fudge, homemade whipped cream, and a cherry on top?

Like power customization, this is something that needs to be available to all players for free, regardless of their account status.
It would be a bit of a slap in the face if we had to pay extra for something the devs have been saying they want to give us for several years now. And since APPs and PPPs are available to everyone equally the ability to customize them should be too, just like our regular powers.
I also recall, with my very very bad memory, that when a poster once asked if we could have power customization *at all* we were told a flat out "No." That it could not be done. |
We weren't told it couldn't be done, we were told it was too time consuming to do, since at the time it was asked there were a grand total of like 20 people working on the game.
When more people were hired to work on the game, power customization was one of the first things they were tasked with....and we still had to wait more than a year to get it.

Incorrect. THey'd be charging to finish the work they started already by producing the car.
Again, incorrect. You'll note I mention being fine with purchasing additional alternate animations and such. THOSE are closer to what you're describing here. Which you'll notice I didn't do. The only thing I mention it ruining is any good will I'd have toward the company if they pulled that sort of a stunt. However, I expect them to finish working on something they started for free and offer the finished product for free. I'd be annoyed if they released a new task force free to everyone.... but charged me a fee to be able to run the last mission. Which you're saying is fine, "since you don't need to run that task force." I'd be annoyed if they released a free costume set for everyone... but charged for the boots and gloves, or for one of the body types when the other two had it free. And I'd be annoyed if, after giving us 90% of basic customization, they charged for the same basic customization for pool/ancillary/patron powers. (AGAIN, though, I'd be fine with purchasing fancier, new, non-basic animations - a lightning bolt coming down for hasten going off, flames that look like flames for superspeed, etc. as they'd be *beyond* the basic tint/noFX we have for the other powers.) Again. New, alternate, fancy power customizations (say, a lightning bolt coming down when hasten activates) - fine, charge for those. But *finishing the work they already started and gave us for free* (color/tinting/noFX options) - that should be free. That's *completing prior work.* I wish people would quit misusing "entitlement" where it doesn't belong. |
The Devs never outright promised/guaranteed that we would get any extra Power Customization at all and even if they delivered this supposed mythical upgrade that would supposedly "finish" this task (whatever that means) they never promised us that they would not charge for it. Think about it logically: if it was going to be a "sure thing" then why didn't it all happen a few years ago when they were actually working on this in general? Sure it would be NICE if they did these things for us like you envision, but wishing for it will not make it come true.
At the very least your expectations in this matter are highly skewed towards getting everything you want for nothing. Sadly the world doesn't usually work that way.

The ultimate problem here is that you think we are ENTITLED to something the Devs mentioned as a "working plan" for additional improvements several years ago. You are holding their feet to the fire over this and are getting upset that the Devs' priorities have changed. Sorry but sometimes life happens. *shrugs*

I feel quite confident in saying that, in the end, it is coming down to the all mighty dollar. What they see is months of work designing customizations and a UI to accommodate them, then another month (at least) of beta testing that system, all leading up to a day or two that it would take people to run their characters through the tailor to customize the new options before returning to the same things they were playing before.
I think the Devs do not think that the ability to make your Elec^3's Static Discharge the same color as your Short Circuit is enough to garner new revenue. Or that the ability to change the effects of Fly, Super Speed, and Teleportation would bring players back to the game. I would like to think they would be wrong, but I honestly cannot say because I am biased.
The only thing I can infer from the facts that we have is that the Devs think that new content/powers are the things that will bring in revenue, and that Pool/Ancillary/Patron power customization would not be worth the time required to implement it.

Heh, what if they made it one of the rewards of a Super Pack?
You know, might get it in the next one, might not get it for a number of packs...
Wouldn't that be better marketing? I bet that sure would sell a heck of a lot of Super Packs, if they made it rare enough.

Telling us we have to buy super packs in the hope of MAYBE of getting access to what should be a basic function of the game?
No.....that wouldn't upset people at ALL........
Have fun being the person that has to drop THAT bombshell.

I think it should be free for the same reason that I think it would be silly if certain costume pieces suddenly required a fee of real money in order to change their color. The groundwork of this feature has already been expressed as something that I get as a basic functionality of the game, thus I come to a conclusion that I shouldn't have to pay extra for it.
That doesn't mean they won't still charge for it, just that my expectation is that it's a feature, not an extra.
As mentioned before, however, I'd buy it if that's really what they wanted to do. It would be far more deserving of my money than, say, a leprechaun.
Nope. I'd even take it on myself to raise a fuss if it was a VIP only feature. This is something that should have delayed power customization until it was actually finished. Going forward, it would set a terrible precedent to nickle and dime everyone for cool stuff that really should be just added for free.
Updates to bases, a PvP system overhaul, the return of base raids and Items of Power, Supergroup improvements/leveling/benefits, pool power customization, more character specific alternate advancement, zone revamps, and so on, are all things I'd put under the categories of "should be top priority" and "things that should be a part of issue releases for free and not microtransactioned."
Whether I would pay or not is less relevant than what charging for it would say about Paragon Studios as a company. And what it would say is a whole lot of really bad things. Paragon Studios and, to some extent, NCsoft, are in a somewhat unique position with City of Heroes, in that community involvement has earned them a lot of good will with the player base, and much of our support comes as much out of good will as it does out of a customer-vendor relationship.
As such, pulling a dick move like charging for what we should have gotten as part of our subscription two years ago is likely to cost them a LOT more than it's ever going to make. One has to remember that micro-transactions aren't just pure revenue source. They have a cost above and beyond what the content in them costs to develop, and that's the cost of good will. And the cost of good will, whenever people have to pay it, is VERY high indeed.
I can see why players would be tossing the idea around - we've done that for years: "Can I get what I want if it's in a paid pack?" I sincerely hope, however, that the people in charge just know better than to consider this, themselves. That is NOT a good idea.

While I think it's something that should be free (at the very least to VIPs) and possibly tied to a tier unlock (so free to VIPs and at a certain point for Premiums)...I do know if they made it pay only, I'd pay it.
Doesn't mean I'm for it being that way except under the conditions I mentioned.

I mean, even in the post you quoted:

Or as I said bluntly earlier in the thread:
So, summary: Pay for pool customization: No. Pay for extra customization animations, while leaving "noFX" and color options free for everyone: Sure. Pay for something else (costume set, powerset, etc.) that goes to funding it: Sure. |
Do try to portray what I'm actually saying accurately.
Yes.
