So...Statesman's Crotch
Really. Men live in terror that someone will accuse them of liking it, because if that happens, they lose all of their heterosexual male privilege. If someone catches me looking at a crotch, they'll feel entitled to treat me the way they treat gay men, and all women, so I don't dare risk that.
After all, just by existing, this splash screen is already treating them the way the comic book genre treats women. (See also: Shortpacked.com, "False Equivalence".) You know as well as I do that this is what's going on. |
I wouldn't want to login to seeing a females crotch either on my game. I like heroic - this is Elvis in blue and red spandex.

Yes, my first thought every time I fire up CoX is now "CROTCH!" But for some reason it makes me laugh. I agree with Infernus_Hades in that I wouldn't want to see, say, Sister Psyche or Ms. Liberty in this pose either. I've been keeping up somewhat with the general discussion of objectification in comics, though, so I think what makes me laugh is that this seems to be a bit of inadvertent "what's good for the goose..."
That or poor Statesman's complete lack of... endowment. Apparently the power of the Well has given us the ultimate object lesson on the danger of steroids...
I personally think the new login screen image is awesome, and my eyes are drawn to the star on his chest, not his crotch.
That being said, the image with the rainbow is hilarious.

Death for Dollars! (ID 1050)
Dr. Duplicate's Dastardly Dare (ID 1218)
Win the Past, Own the Future (ID 1429)
See, I like this better than the previous splashscreen -- it's pretty clearly a tribute to the fallen hero. (Aaaand now I've got "Tribute" by Tenacious D in my head, d'oh.) But my first thought on seeing it was that Statesman was letting fly with some epic, er, wind, which I have to say would be an impressive superpower. Call it the Nova Blat.
Anyway, the visual absence of, um, sausage on the plate makes me wonder if there's a default system setting similar to the in-game profanity filter -- instead of AdBlocker it's a c@$%blocker?
>_>
Fine, I'll leave now.

I actually had a thought as a god he can make his attribute any size he wants for each encounter - he is afterall frigging Zeus.
Let's add to that the fact that male fandom, and I'm not just talking comics fandom here, can get really upset by any image that might even be interpretable as a sexualized male. Case in point: Paizo Publishing, the makers of the Pathfinder Role-Playing Game, used to publish Dragon Magazine. If you've seen D&D/fantasy art, you know there's a lot of cheesecake there, including in some of the most iconic images that exist. Yet the editors noted that the single issue for which they received the most complaints about the cover art was the issue in which they decided to have a shirtless man in a loincloth on the cover, and not in a violent Conan-like 'seeing your enemies scattered before you' pose.
Now, there's a lot of good-natured humor here among the responses to the OP's question, and even the OP's original question can be seen as being made more out of bemusement than gender fear. So I'm not really sure what this observation is intended to do -- intimidation? Projection? Simple confusion?
Now if you'll excuse me, I need to kill skuls.

And it's about time too.
And this is now headcanon. States, being the savvy dude he is, makes his package disappear in combat so Recluse can't take a cheap shot at the goolies.

The change away from the "Fighting the robot" loading screen took me by surprise, but apart from that I didn't actively dislike it.
Granted, I still actively miss the City of Villains loading screen. But I've come to peace with missing that (and my ability to time its appearance with the last dramatic note of the villain-side "mission complete" music, causing Recluse and friends to seemingly leap out of the monitor on a musical cue.)
But no, I think that the current loading screen is good. Kinda makes me wish there was a way to randomly cycle through all the loading screens we've had, though.

I think the picture is cool - the pose is very heroic - but the lack of even a Training Enhancement slotted downstairs does kinda catch the eye
@Golden Girl
City of Heroes comics and artwork
Now that's an interesting anecdote. Exactly what was the piece in question? I'd like to judge whether concerns there were justified or blatantly stupid.

Then compare it to the cover for #340 or #298.
My vote is 'blatantly stupid'.
