Playerbase Poll.. What Do YOU Think ?

The question I pose to you is this.. well, we'll get to that in a minute..

No right or wrong answer, just curious.
Was going to post a specific question in the title of the thread but figured the thread in general could be recycled for multiple and various opinion polls..

The question / topic in particular I had in mind was in regard to the fact that beast mastery was coming Soon!™ and I have toons that are befitting that AT but are currently utilizing other ATs..

So, the question I pose to you is this ;
would you re-roll a toon that you had years of work / badges / accomplishments / etc. put into so that you could better match their name to a new AT ?

for example ; re-roll Super Beastlord the Tanker with 6 years of accomplishments into brand spanking new Super Beastlord the Beastmaster MM ?

Why reroll? Transfer the old toon to another server first or rename it.

Purely for the name? Probably not. I would reroll a character to a different, newly available AT/powerset that fit their concept better, though, and indeed have done so several times.

Edit: But I cannot bear to delete a character much past level 20, so usually the old character gets transferred to another server for retirement.

Yep. I'd probably rename and re-costume the old one into someone new, though. No deletion.

It depends on the level of the character and how old it is. Ive rerolled my da/sr to StF/SR but that toon was only in their 20's. I wouldnt reroll anything in the30's probably.

I wouldn't reroll, assuming that 'years of work' includes getting to 50. I don't care about badges, but getting to high level represents a *lot* of work for me given my altaholism, so I have a hard time imagining a reason that would convince me to delete and reroll such a character. Even high level characters which I am no longer interested in (like my ice dom) don't get deleted.

What I *would* consider doing, however, is renaming the existing character and then using the name on a new character with the new set/at/whatever. This would be highly contingent on actually coming up with a *good* new name (and possibly concept) for the existing character, however. If it's a character I enjoy, I would *not* want to saddle them with a possibly bad name, as getting a name that feels right for the character is not only a difficult and time-consuming process for me, but also is extremely important for me in terms of actually being able to enjoy the character. (I wish they gave us vets tokens which could be used for renames *or* transfers instead of just transfers. I'm much more likely to use renames than transfers.)

Make the new character a brother or sister to your current one. Think of two siblings having same ambitions, but using different ways to achieve it. Or you can make the new character the child/disciple of your old, inheriting and perfecting his/her way of life.
Another bonus is that you get a hard lore connection from the very beginning.

I'd certainly not delete the existing character, but I'd see and make sure that the new powerset truly did realize the character (and my enjoyment of that character) better than what I had previously...
If the new powerset did work out best, I'd then figure out what I wanted to do with the old/existing character... Re-purpose them into a new/different character or come up with a slightly different name to have the same character represented with two different ATs/Powersets.

With your example:
I might end up with Super Beastlord (the Tanker) and Super Beast Lord (the Master Mind)... Possibly renaming the Tanker first, to give the MM the version I liked best (in this example, if the name is available, I don't see the point).

Having two avatars to play as the same character can be a lot of fun and can allow you to bring the same character that you love, while enjoying and/or contributing two very different game-play experiences.

I, personally, would only do that if the concepts work for both powersets/ATs.
In my mind... Super Beast Lord could still be one heck of a fighter without his beastly followers!

Yes I would love to do that with at least three of my characters who I've had around for about 5 years. Their concepts have changed but their experience remains the same.

Transfer the old toon to a new server, and roll a new toon with the now available name. I've done it only once so far.

Yes. I rerolled (renamed, really) my 50 Pistol/Kin (fully IO'd) to Pistol/Time because it fit the character better.

For the name no. But yes if the new power-set/AT better fits the concept (which is what I'm doing to a 50 once Staff Fighting finally drops. And have done that in the past for other AT's. Redoing a DP/Kin for DP/Time is a more recent example),

Kind of what I am debating now.

My first, and beloved, character, I envisioned being sturdy and smash-happy. So I created a WP/WM Tanker.

I wanted bigger, smashier weapons.

Then came Titan Weapons. Perfect for him.

But I am so attached to him! Part of me doesn't want to re-roll because I don't want the redesign to outshine my first character, my first 50.

Thank you, Champion.

I follow a strict non-rerolling policy for myself. So no.

Well I wouldn't delete if they were 50, but yes, Id totally move to another server or rename and then reroll them up!

In fact I've done it alot!

I'll likely never delete a 50, I never focus on a single alt long enough to get to 50 in one shot.. it's typically more like... uhm... 17 or so re-visits between making other alts. after around 4 years I've got about 6 level 50s and 8 or so others within arms reach. the only character I ever bothered to re-create was my first character made and name-sake, Mystic Cross. I made a Praetorian version of her, and changed from an Invuln/Energy tank into a KM/Invul brute. I kept the original where she is and gave the second a new name.

You could go the alternate dimension route, or treat this the same as the natural evolution with iconic comic book characters like Robin/Nightwing, or Angel/Archangel for example... same character with different name/look/fighting style etc.

If you're really dead-set on the name hang-up, transfer the original to another secondary server and re-create with the new powersets and same name. I personally prefer to keep the original in-tact as the original because, well, Nightwing might decide some day that he preferred being Robin.

I've recreated a few toons over the years, when a better set would work for them, but only when the set I originally picked had them stalled somewhere. Usually around the 20's.

If I liked the concept enough, I'd revamp them with new powers trying to get something that clicked.

Anything that makes it to 40 or beyond is safe from deletion though. They are established heroes with deep backgrounds by then and the powers they have are theirs.

I have however, created a few 'sidekick turned hero and son of' concepts though, to continue on a legacy or name etc.

If it was me, I'd most likely leave Super Beastlord the Tanker alone and just roll up
Ultra Beastlord as his disciple or offspring.

I see no value in characters. Years of badges, xp, whatever - it is all worthless

the only value is in playing and having fun

if re-rolling the character and playing a new powerset is fun, then I do it

Just for a rename, i'd say rename the toons, i have a toon <-- my name lol well for 5/6 yrs it was HardRider V2 but after all the time i used the renames i had n transfers i had to rename V2 to just HardRider. Cos even tho it wasnt the first ever made..it has been my main for this long.

If its more then just a rename..Then hmmm Id still rename that toon so ya can still play it as something else with new look n bio and make tht toon as the new powers u want it as..btw id make a dummy toon with tht name juuustt incase..cos it happened to me once within 10 mins i lost it

Not for a name, no. $10's worth more than my time in levelling up the same character from scratch. For new powersets and ATs, though, yes I will. Once I swap powersets or class, what I make is a brand new character that deserves to be played anew altogether. Since I never repeat the exact same AT/powersets combo (with one notable exception), every new one is genuinely new.

As to why not transfer the old character to another server or rename said character and start over that way? Because it costs money and accomplishes nothing. If I'm rerolling a character, it's because I'm making a better version. Once I have a better version, the worse version is obsolete and unnecessary, clogging up slots and costing me money to retain.

As to why not use the old character but change the name, costume and concept and reuse the levels? Because each character is its own thing, and each character needs to serve its time and play its levels. There's no fun in making a new character at the level cap with nothing left to do. If I create a new character who hasn't existed before, then that new character will have to make its own progress.

Moving the toon to a different server is far more likely for me. And I've done that before.

But any toon that has a lot of anniversary badges? Especially the EARLY ones? No -- I don't delete those toons.
