That would be neat! But I wouldn't change my main.

Any character I don't fall in love with is deleted, and any powerset I dislike is rerolled to something I like better. It's not any big deal, though occasionally annoying to re-do the same content for badges. It's just what you do as a part of normal CoX gameplay.... isn't it?

Do your other characters resent the "Main"? Are people aware that they are are going to make their less loved characters undergo years of therapy to undo this kind of damage? If you can't love them all, don't have them! It's cruel!

And does everyone rank their characters in terms of good, better, "Main"? Or "Lieutenant-General Main" or "Vice Main" or "First Runner-Up Main" (in case the "Main" cannot perform his/her duties)?

Whole concept befuddles me.
I think the concept of main means different things to different people. Some only (or mainly) play their main. Personally (being a major altoholic) all it really means for me is the character that will be getting the new badges and shinies first. It's also my first 50, my forum name and in-game nickname (Mental) that my friends call me. But it's not necessarily my favorite power combo or most powerful or most regularly played. Just simply my 'main'.

Actually, I have several.

There's usually one character on each server that I play on that becomes the 'face' of that server for me. It's not always the first one that hits 50 however.

Once that character steps into place, all of the other characters on that server do tend to become part of the 'main's' story to one degree or another.

This isn't really a conscious decision. It just kinda happens for me.

I've only rerolled my main, a controller, once. It was very early on in the game, after realizing how badly I'd been picking powers and he was too low level to survive any kind of respec trial.

I "remade" my main, with just a hyphen between the two parts of his name. The old one gets used to market occaisonally, and I keep for nostalgia reasons but I will probably never, ever, play seriously again.

Because Dark Armor sucks on Brutes. And then they ruined Energy Melee so it's unusable on any efficient team.

(Disclaimer: Dark Armor Brutes become moderately playable with the right incarnate abilities, or with a multi-billion inf IO investment. I can not comment on the playability of Dark Armor Scrappers, or Dark Armor Tanks. I have a theory they would be better, but Im not willing to invest time in playing a set that I found sub-par on one AT already.)

Like MentalMaden said the definition of a "main character" in a MMO can probably mean just about anything you want it to mean.

For example even if you have 100 different alts my guess is that there's probably at least one of them that has more total hours played on it than any other, even if it's just by a few hours here or there. That alt could easily be defined as your "main" just based on total hours alone.

It's not really -that- big a deal.

With the new changes to Stalkers, I foresee at least 3 of my characters getting recrafted yet again. I'm not sure if Stalkers actually out-DPS anyone now in Issue 22, but it sure does FEEL awesome playing them.

I re-rolled when DP came out - just stuck a period on the end of my name. Once free server transfers came in, I moved the original off and did a transfer rename to get rid of the period.

Don't give a crap about badges, so that wasn't an issue.

I will never re-roll my main hero Kat/Regen scrapper(too many years invested in him)

I have re-rolled my Main villain(Which is evil twin of my hero) from a Dark/ea brute to a Dual blade/WP brute to better match my original concept of him.

I only re-roll if a new power set better fits my concept

My second oldest scrapper Neone Swift(softed capped MA/SR) would be re-rolled into into Psi melee/psi defense if that ever gets made.

My list of High level re-rolls(They were retired to the vip server)
NeoKronos DM/EA to DB/WP
Thomas Swift Jr From NRG/NRG blaster to a Beam/dev blaster
Envoy Of Silence from Axe/invul brute to Elec/TW tank
Shadow Lilly from dark/dark def to nin/dark mm to fire/dark corr (she might go dark/dark con now)
I think Blazing Bertha hold the record for the most re-rolls about 5 each time getting above level 20 then retrying something else

She happy now being a Fire/Shield Brute

No, but it's ... alien to my sense of logic, which, against all evidence, I do have. Unless you are GG and make the same character with the same name and powerset (I believe?) on each server, or Dechs, who makes the same character with different powersets. THAT makes sense to me.

Why take the time and trouble to get a character to 50, flesh out a fitting bio, trick it out with the best you can afford to see just how good it can be, if it's not (in your own head) a great and wonderful creation?

I don't get making characters knowing they are always going to play second-fiddle.
Plus, you know, they cry, and I feel terrible.

Something that helps me here is that I never create a character trying to meet some external concept using in-game powersets. All of my characters are created specifically as whatever powersets and ATs they are at character creation. I decide I want to try, say, a Kin/WP Scrapper, or a Dark/Dark Defender, and create a character whose origin and backstory fit that, not the other way around. This means I pretty much never feel compelled to re-roll someone because new powersets come out that better match their concept.

That and the notion that I don't level something all the way to 50 unless I enjoy it a lot means my characters are pretty stable.
I created the character before power customization came about with a vague concept in mind. Mind Control and Radiation Emission both suited the magical look and effects I wanted to have and were fun sets to play. I've always been fond of playing some of the more visually ambiguous powersets (Rad was good for this) as something other than what the description states. If everything was as described by the game I'd find that stifling to a lot of ideas.

At any rate, the concept wasn't written in stone or even in her bio, it was just in my head. When I actually reached 50 the concept was very different from what I had originally conceived. Power customization really let me span the gap between how the game described her powers and how I viewed them. It also opened up a lot of possibility other sets to simulate the visual effects I liked.

Of course, now there are new possibilities, but that doesn't take away how much I enjoyed playing her. In fact, maybe I'll get to enjoy her story again.

Why? Well, I've developed her story the most (even if only in my head), possibly invested the most time in her, and enjoyed playing her throughout all her levels. I really like the character and her story.

There are two issues there. One is how much you like the character. For me, that hasn't changed. I like her concept, costumes, and story. I consider her my most thought out character. The other is how much you like the powerset. I can't say that I dislike her powersets as I've played both of them pretty extensively (Mind to 50 thrice and Radiation to 50 twice), but I don't enjoy them as much as I once did due to both having played them so much and to better options becoming available.

But there's more... there's a certain sense of attachment. The character is, in a way, a souvenir of the fun I had with my friends (and some strangers). I could trade in that old sea shell for a new shiny one with cool spikes, but it isn't going to remind me of the time I went to the beach with my buddies.

For me, it's pretty much Mains (3 of them, all for the same reasons I described for this main), actively playing, and plan to play again.

We can't have more than one great and wonderful creation? Or have the desire to go back and make something good a little bit better? An author doesn't stop simply because he's reached the end of his book. He goes back to change it and improve upon it, even if that means rewriting large portions of it.

You can have TONS of Mains! I think that's a beautiful idea!

(That was rather my point, actually... apologies if I didn't make that clear)

I play numerous characters, and I've played some of them far more than I've played my "main" character. For me, my "main" is simply my namesake character and the one to whom I best relate. I tend to make a version of him in any given game I play that allows character creation. My universal alter ego.

Well, from an RP standpoint, I can say you do that but then realize no matter how good the concept, how awesome the character, no matter how well the powersets match up to what you envisioned, sometimes the RPing aspect just doesn't play out as well due to various reasons.

Now my namesake, is based on a character I wrote about way back when, when people were saying "What's the internet?"

So while I'll never actually go the way I envisioned her then (due to RPing), I've constantly tried to get her closer to it.

Don't have a "main" so to speak, but I have rerolled one toon.

My Energy Melee / Elec Armor stalker. In his initial concept, his weapon was a pair of kinetic generators attached to his fists, powered by dimensionally displaced giant capacitors. The closest thing to fit the bill was energy melee, so I had to go with that. IOed him out and raised him to 50.

Then, when Praetoria and Kinetic Melee were released, I decided to just delete the original toon and then get to work with on a Kinetic Melee / Elec Armor Stalker, going through Praetoria instead of rogue isles. I raised that one to 50 and IOed him out, too.

I looked at my name's sake one last time, emptied his influence and some high value salvage to myself via email, said good-bye, and promptly deleted him. There was a pang of regret but that is natural since he was my very first character.

Recreated him giving him Dark Melee / Dark Armor, man oh man, I forgot how fun it was playing a character with Dark Melee. I love the sound when Shadow punch and smite hit! It just sounds like it hurts like the devil! lol Leveled him up to 8th before crashing last night. I look forward to working him up back to 50; however, this time with better knowledge and experience. The only thing I did was change his name up. Shortened it from Knight of Khonsu to Khonsu's Knight. Sounded better.

Current active characters: Dragon Maiden (50+3 Brute SS/WP/PM), Black Widow Maiden (50+1 Night Widow), Catayclasmic Ariel (50 lvl Defender - Kin/DP), Quantumshock (50 lvl Elect/Energy/Energy), American's Defender (38 lvl Tanker - SD/Mace), Spider-Maiden (15 lvl Corruptor - RB/PD) & Siren Shrike (15 lvl Defender - Sonic/Sonic). My entire stable.

This. If my namesake weren't level 50 and an Incarnate, I would reroll him as a Dark/Dark Controller or Dominator, but I've invested too much time into him to start over.

Long since and many times. I'm quite ruthless about rerolling. No toon is safe until 50.

In a sense.

When I came back to the game, I made a new character instead of continuing my original scrapper from April 2005.

So I guess I just altered who was considered my "main" character.

I don't generally reroll. Occasionally, I create a character then scrap character and and the concept to an existing character's established backstory.

I have never, and will never, re-roll my main. Balanced is my first character, established as a concept before the game launched, and still my favorite. He's my anchor in the City world.
