Lucas planning to retire

So from what I can make from this article. George Lucas is planning to retire, at least from making big budget production films and focus more on small personal projects.

None to soon. Seems like he just got less talented the older he got.

About four movies too late (not counting Red Tails as it's not out yet).

This is a damned dirty lie.

Saying "Han shot first" would indicate that more than one shot was fired.

Han shot. The end.

Absolutely. Han was a scoundrel, no way around it. That was part of his charm, and part of his character. He wasn't responding to a shot fired in self defense, he just capped the guy who'd tracked him down before he could take him in. End of story.

But the media empire will keep going...and going...and going...

I heard a rumor that he's coming to work for COH as a guest Dev, and director.

Oh-Noes! Light saber mania!

This. It was clearly self defense, there was no need to have Greedo fire at all, he made it clear that Han was going to die, Chewie would likely become a slave to Jabba and Jabba would impound the Falcon.

People in Lucas' position don't ever really "retire" the same way most people do and I always think it's funny when they claim that's what they plan to do like it's a newsworthy event. Clearly he will have as much of a hand and say in anything his organization is involved with as he wants until his dying breath.

That said if he wants to call "focusing on small personal projects" his version of retirement then whatever floats his boat. If anyone thinks he won't be behind newly re-edited versions of Star Wars every 5 or 10 years until he dies is fooling themselves. *shrugs*

The article points out he wants to do much smaller personal arthouse style films, where he basically started out in his career.

And it's a bit of a shame, because THX1138 and American Graffiti are actually pretty good films. It showed there was more to him than just Star Wars.

But can I blame him for retiring? In his position where so many fans find him to be answerable, it has to weigh on you eventually with all the negative comments.

However.

I have a good friend who's cousin (I know this sounds like a made-up thing, I assure you it's not) works in CGI animation and has met Lucas. To say that he's eccentric is an understatement and he has incredibly isolated and removed views on moviemaking and well....a lot of things.

But he's insanely rich and to him a home movie can cost a hundred million. Heck, I'd do it too in his position.

You don't retire from things you like to do and you don't let people complaining stop you either. Grow some balls and rise above the hate ^.^

Agreed, until he announces that he is stepping down from control of his empire he will continue to make decisions and churn out Star Wars revisions. As to the revisions themselves, I've been okay with most of them, with the Han/Greedo scene being the one that was totally unnecessary. Also as a long time Star Wars fan, I've never quite felt the same level of vitriol or "child hood violation" that others have expressed about the prequels.

There only 2 revisions that I do not like and wish that they were removed. 1st one is the infamous Greedo shots first scene and 2nd is Vader saying Nooo in Return of the Jedi as he picks up the Emperor. Everything else I've been okay with.

Han stepping on Jabba's tail didn't bug you? Or the atrocious CGI Jabba for that matter?

And Vader saying "Noooo," was objectionable, but Luke screaming like a little girl as he plunged down the reactor shaft in TESB was OK?

Those four are my biggest objections, but since I have the original theatrically released versions of the OT on DVD, I no longer care what changes Uncle George makes to "his" films.

The Lucas revisions you mentioned didn't really bug me, and I kind of had a 'meh' attitude when I saw them. I guess it's a matter of perspective for various fans as to which Lucas edits are the worse and which are barely tolerable.

Come on. Howard the Duck is one of those movies that is so bad it loops around to the other side and becomes awesome. Plus, Lea Thompson in her skimpies.

^This. I happily have a copy of it on DVD (I was also a fan of the comics beforehand so I'm probably biased). Also, while I can see HtD not being everyone's cup 'o tea, the Willow hate seems kind of out of left field to me.

I couldn't agree more.

Agreed. It's not a great film, but it is a fun movie. Definitely worth getting the DVD.
