A Halloween Thread: what frightens you?

Heights, it's kind of hard to explain but if I'm in a roller coaster, airplane I'm fine, but if I'm in something like a slow moving ski-lift, very high stairs, or going across a very high bridge, up on a ladder. I start having panic attacks, badly.

Large, flying insects with spines and hard carapaces that make loud clicking noises as they fly. Never seen one in person, but just thinking about them freaks me out.

Spiders. Sends a chill down my neck and makes me just shake. Been that way since I can remember. My Mom says I was always terrified of them. I even tried hypnosis, didn't work. The logical part of my brain says that this is a tiny little thing that I could crush with between my thumb and pinky finger. The other part of my brain, which is in control at this point, is a blubbering mass asking my 11 year old to take it out.

No one pays attention to me, cause I listen to the voices in my head.

People. I have seen people do horrific things to one and other. Riding on commercail jets bothers me, light airplanes I love.

Speaking of which, I'm also afraid of tinfoil hats.

I know, and it makes my flesh crawl to think of it. Blech.

Though I suppose I should be used to it by now, I'm always surprised when people post things along the lines of "generalized human suffering" in these threads. Sure, those things are bad, but are they "frightening" in the same way irrational fears are frightening? Of course, I have no way of knowing, nor does anyone else, for sure, but I find it hard to believe that those sorts of things inspire the same kind of visceral, irrational dread that, say, spiders do in someone who's afraid of spiders. "Fear" and "concern" are not the same.

Needles, specifically hypodermic needles, but this can be traced back to an incident in my childhood when I was in hospital, so I at least know what it stems from.

Sooner they get hyposprays in general usage, the better for me

CLOWN DENTISTS!!!!

She's told me if she ever went to the dentist's and he came in dressed as a clown, she'd probably end up hurting him out of sheer terror. Clowns really do make her jump when she sees one unexpectedly, as I discovered when I gave her a copy of the film made from Stephen King's IT last year.

the deep ocean, not shoreline, not 200 yards out in the carribean where you can see the bottom, but underwater, middle of the atlantic.....dark......stuff lives down there......the no breathing thing..... me no likey!!

also, once, when i was younger, i spent some serious time contemplating infinite existence (theological phase), the more i tried to wrap my head around it, the more it terrified me. i sincerely hope we blink out into nothingness at the end.....

A couple things actually frighten me...

1. Clowns..... perhaps my aversion of clowns comes from the little bit I saw of the movie IT.....

2. Snow.... the reason I am frightened of snow is simply because I do not walk so good on snow and am afraid of falling and breaking a bone or doing some other sort of damage....

3. My Imagination.... sometimes my mind really does get the best of me. There are times when I am at home by myself and I look down the basement steps and almost think that there is someone or something down there that might come after me. Also sometimes I think the same thing when I look into dark rooms....lol....

4. Fire and to a lesser extent Electricity..... I accidentally set a farmers field on fire as a kid and was shocked by an electrical outlet as well.....not on the same day mind you.....

thats just me.....

It's more impressive to experience it. I remember one of my trips out to VA beach as a kid and fishing (on boat) and swimming (off) in the deep ocean. I recall a large shadow swimming well underneath me and imagining how big that thing must have been, then picturing how far down the water went from where I was.

Now, it can't have been that far, and it may have been my imagination, but thinking of how big a whale is, and it being that far below, then how far the ocean could be down... it was a daunting experience. It was probably just a sea turtle or something... but it left a mark on me that has had me staring out into space and trying to gauge the depth of stars between them and the moon and anything else I can make out, to compare depths... it's... awe inspiring, and terrifying, to our tiny mortal forms at the same time. When I actually focus to do it out in the middle of nowhere when I can actually see the milky way, I get a sense of vertigo which I find exhilarating.

I couldn't agree more.

Heh you'd be terrified of the Dragonflys that crop up occasionally in my neck of the woods during summer.

They're about 2 inches long and make, well not a clicking sound but an almost helicopter style thrum when they buzz over you, however they are completely harmless and more interested in catching other things, they also turn on a dime, infact its quite beautiful to watch them in action since they seem to glisten a bright blue or green in the summers sun.

yeah..... that's a pretty good summation, thinking about it now the "infinity" thing and the "deep ocean" thing may be representative of the same fear of..... i don't know, insignificance? absolute lack of control? both?

who knows, and i am past the point of defining my limits as a person, so these things can be quietly swept under the rug and forgotten. until that night you're laying in bed with just your thoughts and they hit you again..... hate those damn nights!

Needles. Don't know why, either. I am fine with doing things that involve needles, like getting immunizations, and giving blood (Double-red, so I have to do it less often), but I can't look at the needle. Yes, it does make getting dental work done a hugely nerve-wracking experience since you can't look away from the big honking needle being put into your mouth and injected into your gums.

Crap, I think I just made myself scared. I'm gonna be over in my corner without any needles nearby at all.
