Oh no, clipping!
Fact is, if it wasn't for clipping, Baltzam's costume wouldn't look half as cool as it does. The Big bit is the Valkyrie Shoulders and the High Collar Cloak. The top, rounded paldroun sits atop the material, while underneath on the arm itself is the smaller pauldron. Clipping was used to make the helmet out of Samurai, Warrior and Cyborg pieces, along with a nice glowing aura. I'm Zortel, and I approve of letting us decide whether to use clipping costume parts or not. |
Damn good costume.
You guys are so much better at building costumes then I am.

I should post pictures of my favorite WS. His hair clips with...his head. Yes, for some reason, his hair is situated below the horizon line of the skull. So he has long flowing red/orange hair...with an egg dome sticking out of them middle of it.
Hey, now if I only had a nice tall hat I could use to cover that egg dome bald spot... |
Arc #40529 : The Furies of the Earth
Yeah, Baltzam looks sweet! He would definately merit a second look in a costume contest that I was judging!
I was thinking about the possible issues concerning the long skirt- I imagine that martial arts+long skirt might have some issues, but you know what? There's always workarounds.
I've got a level 50+++ MA/Regen scrapper, who would LOVE the long Death Mage skirt as part of his "epic armor" costume, which currently uses a blend of Ascension and Samurai. So let's say that the Death Mage skirt clips with those big Ascension boots. I have two choices then- depending on how bad the clipping is, I might just suck it up and ignore it. Or if it really bothers me, I can just swap out the ascension boots for something sleeker, which might be a good design choice anyhow, seeing how busy the skirt already is. Either way, problem solved.
So I get the costume made, and find that the long skirt looks funny with those flashy kick animations. Again, I've got options. I can ignore the weirdness- my character only spends a second or two in those extreme poses anyhow. Or I can go back to the tailor and select the little-used martial arts alternate animation set, which is more punch based, for use with that specific costume. No crazy-legs animations anymore, problem with looking weird solved. Or I might decide to make an outfit just for roleplay and socializing, kind of a ceremonial kit, if you will, changing into a different costume for combat. Or the least likely, I can choose to leave the long skirt off of my MA scrapper altogether, and save it for the characters whose leg animations are not so extreme.
Either way, at least with the costume piece included I would have all these cool options, being able to decide for myself which of these is most acceptable. Please stop trying to protect us from ourselves with "clipping" as a lame excuse. As Baltzam's costume and my list of options attest, we don't need the foam padding and arbitrary withholding "for our own good".

I heard about the high collar in game but didn't see it. I at first thought the person was talking about the normal High Collar from the Magic set. Did we get the CoT High Collar?
Edit - looks like no, we didn't.
Therefore:
I'd like to see the High Collar added and of course the Hat, big gloves, cape and belt. I understand the long skirt may have excessive clipping but I think we're at the point where we can handle it.

Sorry, I was referring to the high collared cape from the Magic pack. Unfortunately, we can't be trusted with the pretty one that the CoT get, even if the clipping issues would probably be about the same.

I wish I had remembered we could preview pieces without buying them... Seeing how much is missing from the CoT costume set has resulted in me with a sevre case of the buyer's remorse...

I'm glad everyone's voicing their opinion, but the pessimist in me is saying that this will likely never get revisited now that it's out.
Here's hoping the gunslinger set is good at least, huh?
The CoT costume pack makes me wish for Thorn blast and Thorn manupliation for blasters.

I, too, often rely on clipping to make new pieces look awesome.

Not for nothing but I'm glad I read this topic before wasting any money/points on the COT bundle... without those really unique pieces it just isn't worth it to me. Sadly this decision on Paragon Studio's part will make me question buying any future costume sets based on npc's since the likelihood of anything I actually want from them actually being in the release is low it seems.
I do hope they rethink these decisions and add those missing pieces (and give them retroactively to those who already bought the bundle. As it stands I have little use for the COT pack

...and I want to dispel some of the rumors that we do this to keep unique pieces in the NPC's hands. |
What is more likely the case is that the pieces in question clash with over 20% of the other pieces in that area (cutting through geometry, in general looks really bad). In these cases we reserve the right to withhold these pieces in order to maintain the good looking characters you guys are capable of. |
- There have been serious clipping issues with many costume pieces for a very long time. Issue 4 introduced a sharp upturn in the amount of clipping players had to work around (or exploit) in character design. I was worried then that a lot of characters would end up looking like crap. That didn't happen. So it should be clear by now that most players will avoid clipping, or even leverage it creatively.
- I look at many of the excluded CoT pieces (big gloves, jeweled belt, back detail), and I can't see how they're any more intrusive than some of the other stuff that's been recently released. Such as, for example, the Celestial pieces.
- Some of the worst clipping I've seen has come out of Booster Packs. I can't even use Valkyrie Wings, because my characters' calves get impaled by the wingtips. Some of the modeling and clipping on the Steampunk pieces--the most recent Booster Pack, I might add--are terrible. Where were these standards of quality then? If these items got the green light, I find it hard to fathom why the excluded CoT pieces didn't.
- Currently, with body scaling and existing clipping issues, players are fully capable of making completely hideous looking characters. So the line, "we reserve the right to withhold these pieces in order to maintain the good looking characters you guys are capable of," seems a bit, I dunno... inconsistent, at best.
While it's nice to get a response, this one has raised more questions for me than it's answered. It strikes me as running oddly counter to the content that's been delivered in the past seven years.
All that aside...
I won't be getting this set anytime soon. Had there been more substantial pieces included, I no doubt would have snapped it up immediately. I think it's important to note that this will be the first costume offering that I'll be taking a pass on. I don't find it to be worth it.
And while I'm on the subject...
I won't be getting any set for which there isn't: 1. screenshots and 2. a readily accessible itemized list of what's included in the set. So far, the presentation and information details of store items have been, I've found, woefully inadequate.
Being able to model these things in the costume creator is nice, but it's not sufficient. We should be told exactly what we're getting. That's, like, merchandising 101. I'm honestly surprised at how lacking the store is in this regard.

The more I think about this, the more I expect there to be a second and perhaps third CoT costume pack with the remaining costume items. Perhaps a CoT Lt pack, then a CoT boss pack. This would also given them more items to aid with the whole add something new ever week statement.

Wow, way to disappoint my trust in you guys. I thought for sure you'd drop that hat or the armored gloves in the set, even went so far as to defend you guys in the previous thread.
Though, I do see a problem with the armored versions not quite working for players: three colors. They'd have to slightly redesign the gloves to just take two colors.
I want to stick up for you guys, I really do. But, this seems like such a small bit of clipping compared to the rest of things in the creator that already clip.
That being said, I really dig the hood, nice and tight to the head. And the regular CoT gloves are pretty cool, really like the silhouette on them.

Oh heck yes. Go look at the last thread I started, titled "What CoT pieces would you want", you can read it here:
http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=272366
I posted a picture showing all sorts of goodness- several varieties of skirt, an armoured glove (there was another style with huge spikes that I didn't post), and an awesome high collar/back detail. In regards to this last piece, it's freaking lame that they would withhold it on clipping grounds, considering how much the high collar and cape we already have don't play nice with most of the hairstyles and all the shoulder options in the game.
Heck, to further beat down the clipping excuse (that's what it is, a freaking excuse!), I actually DO use shoulder pieces with my high collar cape sometimes, having found some options where the amount of clipping is acceptable to me.
Now for the pope hat... I can kind of see where the confusion might be coming from. It seems like the pope hat is connected to the extreme cleavage robe, and that might be causing concerns of clipping. Well, so is the hood, and they apparently had no problem just clipping the hood off of the extreme cleavage and sticking it over our heads. If the ling is the problem, then just carve it out of the hat and run it like that.
What's that? It takes art time to do that? Well... Yeah, it does, doesn't it? Everything takes art time. Which is why I said I don't need to see a new half-finished rushed set every five days if I can an actually decent set, even if I have to wait two weeks or a month or three months for it. I LIKED the distribution of booster packs because they usually had lots of cool stuff in them. I'm not paying $5 for half of a costume set with all the best bits removed for "clipping."
