    They're "in-game" in some files (souvenir) about the Rikti that you get during Serpent Drummer's missions. The last war the Rikti fought prior to attacking Earth, about a hundred years ago, was with the Battalion.

    Which makes me think that the Rikti aren't from an alternate dimension, but are actually from an alternate future.
  2. Temperature. You can use an application like HWmonitor to look at the current temperature of your PC components. Link. One that we're particularly interested in is seeing what the Max temperature for your GPU (Nvidia) is after you've played some CoH and had a crash.
  3. Which version of AMD/ATI Catalyst is running?

    The very first sticky in this forum is the Safe AMD/ATI drivers list. Those of us with Radeon cards have been providing feedback on which versions play nice with CoH.

    There's also this sticky on how to provide more information about your system.

    Edit: Just another note, the only time I've seen my PC bluescreen/wholesale crash with CoH is when I had overdrive enabled in Catalyst. CoH really does not like overclocking. I'm not sure if you're using overdrive or not, but I might as well put it out there.

Just a small note on the 12.4 HDMI audio issue, if you have a version of Windows that allows user switching (leave the account "logged in" with application states saved, but switch to another account) you can switch instead of log off (even if the PC only has one account), and it'll reinitialize your audio.

    I'm not sure if the Home versions of Vista and 7 allow for this, but I know Windows 7 Professional does.

    It's handy if you have a lot of startup programs, or don't want to re-open all your tabs, or whatever might be going on, while letting you leave power-saving features on.

    A Radeon HD 4600 should be fine for medium/high at 1280x1024-ish resolution. It's OK, I suppose, to leave water and reflections on Ultra, although zones that have lots of water (redside; although there's also more detailed buildings, too) and reflective surfaces (new Atlas Park, Praetoria) are going to see a big performance drop. The minimum Radeon worked out by je_saist for Ultra Mode options is a 4770.

    There are a few other settings that the posted CoHHelper indicates are at Very High that maybe should be taken down a notch if there are any additional framerate issues. Ambient Occlusion as well, maybe, should be dropped from High to Balanced. If there are problems, of course. If everything's been worked out then it can be left alone.

    CoH framerates can vary wildly from zone to zone. I'll be rolling along with my at over 80 FPS with everything on Ultra because I'm in an older zone. Then I'll go to revamped Atlas and BAM! 25 to 30 FPS. And I've got a Radeon HD 7770 / 4GHz FX-6100 / 8GB RAM.

    Praetoria is a hell no, not even after the place freezes over.
    I think he means "Praetoria" in the form of the game engine tech first used there (undercover-style missions are "Praetorian" in that the tech for them comes from Going Rogue).

    He's not saying Praetorian characters should be in Kings Row, he's saying it should be a Vigilante/Rogue zone using the tech used for Loyalist/Resistance mission choices.
  7. Edit: Realized there was a less destructive way to do this!

    Maybe the Midnighters (since they have a time-travel crystal) could offer some missions in 1930s KR. They can send you there during/after Steel Canyon. Maybe something combining phases and the shadow paths in First Ward could be used so that you've got 1930s KR missions in the existing KR zone. They could also specifically send you to certain historical badge locations, like the one where Statesman interrupted a Circle of Thorns ritual. Maybe you can go back and actually be part of that event!

    At the very least, the KR contacts need an overhaul. Half of them start out by giving you missions to see other people in other zones before giving you a couple (literally, 2; OK, maybe some have 3) missions in KR. The other half end their "arc" by giving you missions to see other people in other zones. I'd like everything in KR to be about KR.
  8. Additionally, superpacks give a lot of reward merits. If you buy the 24-pack you'll probably have enough to straight-up buy at least one ATO from the merit vendors (plus 25 million inf, limit one per 4 days). ATOs hover around 20mil, generally, so you can sell the ones you don't need for about that and then either buy the ones you do need from WW or the merit vendor.

    Converters can also be purchased with reward merits (and 2.5mil, no time restrictions), one converter can convert an ATO into one of a different random set, or if you get two of the same brute ATO then for three converters you can convert within the same set (so you'll get a different brute ATO). Again, packs will probably give you lots of reward merits for doing this.

    Another tip is, if you have an ATO that's selling for way less than 20mil, convert it and hope it becomes a more valuable one.

  10. Cross-server teaming I would see as only practical for the LFG queue, because that's an instance that exists for the duration of the trial/TF.

    I wonder if it couldn't be handled like a "fake" server, the instance for the queued trial gets a copy of the character you're queued on. If there's a name conflict (as in, someone else with your name happens to be on the cross-team server at the same time as you) it just tacks on @Server instead of genericing or requiring user intervention. At the end an email is sent to your character on the server of origin with the salvage, XP, Inf, and other rewards you earned. If you have a supergroup on your server of origin then the cross-team server could have a dummy SG for you, and any prestige earned can be part of the email back to your server of origin. You're automatically logged back into the original character on your home server, and the copy on the cross-team server is deleted.

    This way they don't have to worry about moving the character into a cross-team server and then moving back. The cross-team is handled on a copy, and the rewards earned on the copy are emailed back. The original character doesn't need to be overwritten or handled in any way.

    As for crashing during a cross-team trial and re-logging, perhaps during the time that you have a character on a cross-team trial the cross-team server is available in the server selection. Once the trial you joined ends, that server becomes hidden.

    Immediately apparent issues would be:

    Is additional server hardware needed, or can a virtual server borrow space from their current hardware on-demand?

    Are there issues with character copy that would cause too much of a delay to make this feasible without changes to how server data is written? (I'm thinking of the character copy tool for the training room/beta.)

    How difficult would it be to put in place something that basically switches your character for you? (ie, GreatScott on Justice switching to GreatScott on Cross-team Instance without seeing a login screen, or at least not having to interact with it.)

    Would email need significant changes to allow prestige to be sent (at least, by the system, not by players) and for the Cross-server Instance to send a personal character email with attachment to the specific character on a different server? (As in the left-most email tab, not the Character Item tab, because the rewards need to be claimable by only one specific character.)

    Would re-leveling on your original server (in the event of a cross-team DFB) make this look like too much of a kludge?

    Of course, I don't know what they've considered or attempted so far, but I'm hoping the "use a copy, then email the rewards back" idea is somewhat novel.
  11. I'm also noticing people doing a weird sweeping kick animation while buffing or activating toggles. I haven't taken the time to ask them what they activated, but hopefully those powers have already been mentioned in this thread.

    Regarding pool customization, it requires a lot of different teams to work in concert. Not just the design and the art, but it appears to also be no small technological feat.

  12. Sadly the new HD 7000 series needs 12.2 or newer.

    Good news: no crashes in CoH after a few hours of playing.

    Bad news: after my computer goes into sleep mode I can't wake up the audio driver without relogging my Windows account. Fix one thing, break another.
  13. Catalyst 12.4 is officially available now.

    I'm downloading right now, and hoping it'll work out better than 12.3 has. Each ship raid I've been on I crashed at least once. I got into another Hamidon raid, from the beginning this time, and crashed when the second bloom started. Graphics quality had no impact on crashing; it can be on minimum/performance or it can be Ultra everything. I don't think I've had any issues running normal content (TFs, the SSAs).

    I'll try to get into some incarnate trials this afternoon so I can let you folks know how 12.4 and a Radeon HD 7770 are for CoH.
  14. If you have the money, get a Blu-Ray drive. Note that software that can play back and write to Blu-Ray might be an additional cost, unless open source has caught up on Blu-Ray.

    Otherwise, I think the SATA bus speed and the drive read speed in general compensates for the smaller cache of your typical SATA DVD drive vs. your 8MB IDE drive. So at the very least, don't get an adapter.

    VT-x is a CPU feature. ark.intel.com confirms the i5-2500K supports VT-x. Link. (It's at the bottom under "Advanced Technologies".)

    You might notice there's also something called VT-d. Neither the 2500K nor the 2700K seem to have VT-d enabled, as this is more common on server chips (Xeons) and non-K chips (Intel's probably being conservative regarding stability), for virtualization servers to allow guests direct access to certain hardware peripherals. Since you're not building a server to allow others to remote in and work off your PC, I don't think this is all that important to you.

    I would hope that a 40" HDTV is 1080p! But it would depend on the exact model. Text should be clear at the screen's native resolution, which again depends on the model.

    @WanderingAries: Others have already posted a lot of the feedback you need. You seem to enjoy technology so I'll go a little more in-depth, but if you start getting bored, don't worry and don't feel bad, what I have to say isn't all that important.

    The former mentions builtin RAM controller while the latter talks about the Virtualization builtin.
    Product pages emphasize certain features and omit common features in higher-end models (ie, after a certain price point they all have a particular feature and it's no longer special/important). And sometimes someone just doesn't enter all the information in. For comprehensive technical specifications you'll want to go to somewhere like ark.intel.com. All modern CPUs have memory controllers built-in. And yes, many CPUs now have graphics integrated into the CPU die, too. They're still not as good as a dedicated graphics card. (Well, the brand new Ivy Bridge CPUs are better than a Radeon HD 5450 or Geforce GT 520, but those are really low-end cards. You won't be using the integrated graphics, so it doesn't matter.)

    The big difference between the i5-2500K and i7-2700K is price. The performance difference between them in the vast majority of tasks does not equal $120, except for a minority of people with particular needs; or people who like squeezing points out of benchmark scores.

    It's just that one item has a slightly-more-complete label than the other. There are a LOT of numbers that can go into memory timings, but the first three or four give you an idea of the latency and how "tight" the timings are. They're usually just referred to by the first number, like "CAS 9". But CAS 8-9-8 is not as tight as 8-8-8. However... most memory should fit a standard profile that any decent motherboards can automatically detect, so you don't need to worry about timings unless you want to overclock.

    Also, I will third the support for G.Skill.

    The GTX 590 is a dual-GPU card, which depends on SLI. It has two graphics chips on a single board. While this can lead to improved performance in applications that play nice with SLI, some games don't (like CoH). It also scales better with higher-resolution displays, like 2560x1600, or multi-monitor setups. It also pulls up to 365 Watts by itself.

    The GTX 680, by comparison, is a single-chip card that pulls, under full load, 195W. If you've got the money, it's the best single-GPU card available.

    The GTX 560 Ti is the definitive mainstream card. (At least, until the 660 is released.) It hits the right price/performance ratio for most gamers. At 1920x1200 resolution it can average 30 FPS in Crysis with Enthusiast settings. If you want to look at other games or resolutions, here's Anandtech's benchmarks for the 560 Ti: Link. You could also look at other cards in the drop-down box at the top, and do side-by-side comparisons. Note that the GTX 560 Ti 448 Core isn't in this particular list, as it's a limited-run card. It's more like "crippled" GTX 570, except even with its legs broken it's fast.

    Playing with monopoly money is fun, but to really know what all can go together would take a realistic budget ceiling. You can't just downgrade one item to fix the budget unless you're only off by a little. But that's probably not going to happen if you're looking at an i7 and a GTX 680.

    I wasn't saying that was the event unleashing the Well, but an event. Most of the heroes (and villains) becoming active/prominent shortly after 1930 were natural or magic, which is probably more like the inspiration of the Well influencing people to become greater. Splitting the atom in 1938 could have had an effect on the Well's influence in the areas of science and mutation, humanity unleashing that power being equivalent to a sub-atomic Pandora's Box. The Well seems to work by "snowballing". It can empower an individual, and later their legacy becomes a part of the Well's power which can be further given to other individuals (in addition to the original power). It makes sense for there to be more and more events sparking further human developments and ambitions, to create more candidates for using and later contributing to the Well's power.

    Mutant issue....

    In the Origin of Power arcs, both sides, you're told that the first mutants appeared after 1938, after humans split the first atom. Sister Psyche says that some people think this is because everything is connected, down to the atom, and that Positron further suspects that all origins of power share some deeper source.

    And that was way before the Well woke up.

    Out of all the origins you "learn" about on that arc, mutants are the only ones that are actually about the origin of the origin. A new set of arcs to finally figure out what sparked the creation (or increased the occurrence of) mutants, and what that means in the scheme of things (a leak in the Well?) could be interesting.

    You don't even need hyper-threading, the i5-2500K has an epic amount of processing power and you should be able to overclock to 4GHz simply by raising the multiplier in the BIOS. No need to fiddle with bus clocks or voltage like in the old days. The benefits of an i7-2600K's hyper-threading are niche, though, which is why the i5 gets so much attention.

    A 128GB SSD should be about $150, which is what 64GB SSDs were at just a year ago. You never know what you might want to put on there, and having more space than needed is better than realizing you're running low. I just bought a second SSD for that reason. Once you get used to load times on the few games you've got on your SSD, the games installed on your HDD will feel like they take an eternity to start up or zone.
  23. I also stopped playing shortly after Street Justice, and recently came back!

    I've been playing the first collection of Signature Story Arcs now that parts 1 through 7 are out. You can access them in your Contacts (the SSA manager is a contact on the list below the scanner/newspaper but above normal contacts) and it'll let you start it from anywhere if you meet the minimum level (20 for the first one or two, 30 for the next few, 40 for the last few).

    Night Ward is going to be a follow-up to First Ward in the 30-40(?) range, in Issue 23 so I don't know much about it.

    VIP also gives you access to Incarnate content for your 50s.

    Dark Astoria has been revamped as an Incarnate co-op zone. (Get there from Peregrine Island or Grandville.)

    There's been 3 new Incarnate trials since we left, too. And the one against Tyrant should be in Issue 23 if I'm not mistaken.

    Those were the big draws, for me.

    That was probably so we could have Penny grow up and not be competing with Psyche for "screen time" (or mission/trial prevalence). Additionally, a character that's still trying to establish herself in the eyes of the Phalanx seems more in-line with supporting players as the stars, rather than Sister Psyche, who everyone kept regarding as the most powerful psychic in the world. I think it's the Mind of Mayhem trial, Desdemona has more reservations about letting Penny help than she does about the rag-tag bunch of incarnates that queued up. Even if Penny is on Sister Psyche's level (is she?) no one's treating her like it.

    But maybe I'm just being optimistic about the dev's motives.

    Edit: On-topic, I'd like to throw my hat in with the folks who want the old badges available via Ouro and, if possible, not to have their current badges renamed.

    Level range, I think. As a TF the Flashback can exemp you to the mission's maximum level if you're above it. Not all enemy groups span 1 to 50, and some have sub-groups that are only meant for a particular level range. Some bosses only have flavors for a few particular level ranges, as well. By using TF mechanics the player's character is guaranteed to be a level that's appropriate for the missions.
