It's hard to imagine why CoH wouldn't be "compatible" with such a feature. We're just talking about a specific set of game files that would have to be patched in a similar way for -any- game. Regardless I've noticed that the current NCSoft Launcher is so many times quicker than the original one for any download that I'm not sure how important the whole pre-downloading concept would be with it.

I suppose after next week we'll know for sure one way or the other.

Unfortunately, it isn't faster for everyone. I'm not sure what the hold up is for some (internet, ISP, local, whatever) but several people have reported the NCSoft Launcher to be slower than the old CoHLauncher.

Considering the number of people reporting problems even getting the NCSoft Launcher to even work in the tech help section... I wouldn't hold my breath for a smooth launch for the big picture.

EDITed to add:

Yes, and no. It is more functional, but requires end users to fudge it on many occasions.

I think it means that a 2 week delay from the scheduled release date is long enough without the extra income from the store

It's hard to imagine, yes, but I'm not going to make assumptions about their code. It may be that CoH uses the launcher differently than NCSoft's other games, because the legacy launcher functioned differently. It may be that they've decided that the pre-release patch isn't necessary because the launcher is faster for so many of us. There may be other perfectly valid reasons that CoH doesn't use the Launcher's pre-release patch download functionality. Whether or not the Launcher is faster for the bulk of us, there are still people on limited speeds or bandwidth that would greatly appreciate having at least a few days to download the patch before it goes Live. I'm not one of those that needs the pre-download, but I can sympathize for those who do.

Long story short: It was taking far too much time to fix given the relatively few number of players who actually use it. From an engineering point of view it became the obvious candidate to de-prioritize in order to get the rest of the show on the road.

Now I'm fairly sure the Devs are going to continue to do their best to get this "problem child" up and working ASAP. But to be perfectly blunt despite what Zwillinger said it seems pretty straightforward to me why they couldn't afford to waste any more time on it prior to Issue 21's launch. Hopefully it won't take too long...
Well, at least your avatar is line with your amount of compassion.

Literally? As in, you believe Macs are composed of gears in need of oiling?

Really, if you're going to take it upon yourself to speak on behalf of Zwillinger and the Devs - and please do cite your sources when you talk about Paragon's cost/benefit ratios - at least put your rhetoric in order.

My thanks for the sympathy - it's going to be painful to have to load this up on Tuesday. I anticipate at least a day downloading before I can actually play the game, given my massive 1Mbs download and the fact that the launcher almost never gets up to the full possible speed when patching, at least thus far. Sigh.

That sucks for Mac users but there is a reason some call it Macintrash. Macs aren't for gaming and that is one fact. The majority of games are built for Windows.

Macs are for photo editing and other type of editing software. It is the best at it. Personally, if I were a graphics designer, music composer, etc, I'd be using a Mac.

This doesn't mean things shouldn't be fixed at some point. However, being a small majority your issues won't get fixed as fast.

This is actually many many years an outdated belief.
PC hardware is equivalent-to-better than Mac and has been for years, at a substantially better cost-to-performance ratio to boot.

@Draeth Darkstar
Virtue [Heroes, Roleplay], Freedom [Villains], Exalted [All Sides, Roleplay]
Code:
I24 Proc Chance = (Enhanced Recharge + Activation Time) * (Current PPM * 1.25) / 60*(1 + .75*(.15*Radius - 0.011*Radius*(360-Arc)/30))
Single Target Radius = 0. AoE Non-Cone Arc = 360.

Are you getting your argument fresh from 1998? These days, if I want to play a Windows-only game on my Mac, I'll restart it in Windows via Apple's Boot Camp, assuming I don't want to use a virtualized OS environment.

The up-to-date fact is that if Paragon Studios can't produce a working Mac client even using Cider in time for the "VIP Head Start" launch, then that failure will not only speak volumes about their technical abilities and resources, but also relegate paying customers from VIPs to POSs.

I of course hope the devs are able to provide for their OS X customers. It would be a shame to add this to their ongoing list of unfixed bugs, e.g. the forum logout and the AE filter.

As my friend once said at the height of the "Hi, I'm a Mac/Hi, I'm a PC" commercials: "There's one area that PCs make road pizza of Macs...gaming."

Let's face it, how many of us remember going into computer stores back in the 90's and go into the gaming section, where we'd see row after row of PC games. Then we'd get to the back wall and see one small section labeled "Mac Games" - often just seperate versions of PC games.

There has to be a point where once it's ready to roll, it should not be held up for a select group.

Go to your NCSoft account, and you can buy time there. Buying time with PayPal adds it to your account right now, but you can also subscribe using a credit card.

A bit confused, as a VIP, will I be able to transfer my toons to the Exalted server for free or I will I have to spend PPoints to do so?

Same price as any other server transfer. However you do get 1 free transfer a month as a VIP.

A few things from the old prices are so amazingly expensive, that it doesn't seem worth it in the least, and I'm praying some of those went down in price to make them actually affordable and worth the cost of actual money, and not that I have to wait 14 months just to get enough, and nothing ELSE just to get them.

I love everything about Issue 21 and Freedom, just the old prices scare me greatly, and I truly hope the new ones are worth it. I'd hate to have to leave the game, on the ideal that all Paragon Studios cares about is $5 and $10-ing people, rather than nickle and dime-ing.
Yeah, I gotta agree with that. The Beta price list I've seen is really kinda insane on some points. $10 for a costume slot, 800 points? Yeeesh.

Intriguing...

That I would celebrate with, once the video is finished.

That or a glass of a really, really good red wine. Hmmm. Maybe I should buy myself a bottle as incentive for finishing this thing.

While I agree that the costume slot price is perhaps a bit high, we should also keep in mind that the price is for newly-added slots 6-10, and slots 2-5 are still opened in the regular fashion. And if I'm not mistaken, each slot purchased from the Market opens the extra slot for every character, which may justify the cost.

That is correct. Costume slots purchased from the Market are global.
