Who is nuke-able?

In 1976, Statesman was "nearly killed' by a Soviet tactical nuclear missile while trying to rescue a downed American pilot".

First of all, is there any more info than this on the incident? Did the nuke hit him in the chest, or just impact near him, or did he even avoid it altogether?

More to the point though, what superheroes could get physically struck by circa '76 tac nuke and survive?

No need to mention Kryptonians, Daxamites, or incarnations of various concepts.

Wikipedia says that 'tactical' nuclear weapons range from a mere 10 tons of force, to up to hundreds of kilotons. For purposes of discussion, we will assume a yield equal to that of the Hiroshima bombing, 13 kilotons, which created a zone of total destruction roughly one mile in radius.

Well, Captain Atom of course, but he would probably be propelled into the future an unknown period of years. After all his back-story is pretty much 'encase him in a dome of unknown alien metal and nuke it.'

Well, I suppose it partially depends on what you mean by "physically struck". I mean, any given Green Lantern could probably take a tactical nuke, if he, she, or it had sufficient warning, but there would be forcefields involved. There wouldn't be a direct exposure. Same goes for your really powerful sorcerer types, like Doctors Fate and Strange.

As far as just stepping up and takin' it on the chin goes, there's... hmm. The Tick... that guy with the mohawk from the Shi'ar Imperial Guard... under some writers the Hulk would just be made bigger by such an experience... and I can think of a handful of supernatural/semi-corporeal types, though in their cases "survive" is kind of a relative concept. I mean, the Spectre (for instance) is already dead, and he's arguably one of those "incarnations of various concepts."

It'd probably only annoy a herald of Galactus, too, but it's kind of a stretch calling them heroes.

Kitty Pryde might be able to survive by just phasing through the explosion, but that's assuming she's immune to various forms of radiation when she's phased.

This is what I was going to post - considering the Surfer has been known to fly through stars, I think he'd be just fine.

Maybe various superspeeders could outrun the explosion?

Depending on the Age, ie Golden, Silver, Modern, then some forms of Superman could. Indeed, Dark Knight Returns showed it happening, albeit it making him look like a skellington

I think Captain Marvel, Captain Atom, possibly Firestorm? He could transmute it?

And Batman of course, cos, well, he's Batman

Batman wouldn't be at the point of explosion.

He'd be standing behind the guy who just launched the nuke, knock that guy out, and then disable the nuke remotely.

Cause he's Batman.

And that nuke was much more powerful than the hiroshima one, since it caused a global EM burst that dropped planes from the sky and broke everything electric.

The Atom could probably shrink down so small it wouldn't affect him.

Couldn't she just phase into the earth (holding her breath), and travel at the speed of earth's rotation away from the blast? I'm pretty sure she has done something like that before?

I think it depends on:
  1. How resistant to radiation damage the superhuman is.
  2. How far away from the center of the detonation the super is.
  3. How much physical punishment can the super take?
At the center of a nuclear detonation the temperatures are so high that anything made of ordinary matter vaporizes into plasma. It get hotter than the sun in the middle of a exploding nuke. Depending how powerful the weapon is, these temperatures persist X number of meters away from the center of the explosion.

Think about that a minute. Is your superhuman made of something something so tough that it won't be vaporized to plasma? The material white dwarf stars are made of would be tough enough. The same is true of matter that composes neutron stars. Anything made of ordinary molecular bonds definitely isn't.

But let's assume it isn't a direct hit.

Farther from the center the temperatures decline rapidly and steel and concrete no longer melt or vaporize. Out here the super could survive provided he or she isn't crushed by the hurtling debris of buildings being torn to pieces. This isn't as much of a problem if the explosion happens out in space or high in the air--no buildings to be torn to pieces.

So at that point the hero just needs to be tough enough to withstand being badly burned and the intense but only momentary radiation flux (There may be fallout to contend with later but that's a separate issue.).

So if the super is not near enough to the center of the explosion, where pretty much anything you can think of will be reduced to rarefied ions, and there is no flying debris to contend with and if they can take a little momentary heat and gamma ray flux, they could probably survive.

Not sure about the rotating away thing; haven't seen too much of Kitty Pryde in the comics so the closest thing I've seen to what we're talking about is Kitty saving the X-Men from the wild sentinel blast during Whedon's run. And are Kitty's abilities even dependent on her holding her breath anymore?

Also, I was thinking in terms of characters that could actually stay in the blast and survive, otherwise I would've been listing all sorts of speedsters and teleporters.

Apollo from the Authority. It would probably re-energise him if he was depleted.

Also Jenny Quantum, who's been known to absorb universes, Jack Hawksmoor if it's a big enough city being nuked and any version of the Doctor, who is just magical and does whatever the script demands. Although in the latter three cases, their powers are so nebulous one could argue either way.

Sort of; it depends on whether the writer remembers.

I think nowadays if Superman can survive it, Captain Marvel can survive it.

Captain Atom I mentioned already. His origin is basically 'encase him in alien metal and nuke him.' He has survived nukes multiple time during his carreer, and in fact survived a nuclear explosion recently in Justice League Generation Lost.

Firestorm has also survived nuke stikes both as Ronnie/Stein and as Jason/Stein. Though he ususally absorbs the radiation.
