Things Newbs Need to Know
The scheduling of various cut-off dates for the NCSoft store makes it looks like that issue 21 will launch on or shortly after Labor Day.
So here we are with a slew of hopefully new and excited players about to join us... |
Brava, Paragon. Clap. Clap. Clap.
(I kid, but there's a dash of ha-ha-only-serious in it. )

Newbs need to know that some of us in the community have access to information that... shall I say... is not widely available. But we use it for the good of the universe.
If you can invite and use tells, ask if they want to join your team (send a tell) before sending the invite. You'll get better results than a blind invite (no tell) and fewer aggravated players.
Know the basics of slotting DO/SO slotting. Examples are based on SO slotting. For DOs, double the number going left to right without adding more slots than what you would use with SOs.
Single Target(ST) attacks get 1 acc, 1 end reduc, 3 damage, and a recharge roughly in that order.
Area of Effect(AoE) attacks get 2 acc, 1 end reduc, 3 damage.
Toggles get 1 end reduc minimum depending on the end cost. Some can take up to three. It takes 3 of whatever the toggle is for, ie a resist toggle gets 1 end, 3 resist damage. If it does something to mobs, it needs 1-2 acc.
3 slot Stamina.
Take your mezz protection asap if you get it. If it's a toggle, 1 end reduc will mostly likely be all you need. Some will do something in addition to providing mezz protecting, so make sure to slot for that aspect as well, or in place of the end reduc, ie Integration from /regen. If the mezz protection is a click power, 2 slot it for recharge.
1 slot anything related to travel powers unless you take Teleport which could use and end reduc and range.
Things a new person to city of heroes needs to know.
1. in most MMOs the community are a bunch of infantile jerks who care more about their epeen than the basics of civilization. City of Heroes is the exception to this that proves the rule. We are a bunch of snarky jerks who care more about seeing how many people we can murder at once before we get killed.
2. Death is just another badge.
3. Mastermind pets are stupid stupid kittens who WILL wander into a horrible horrible death if not watched like babies.
4. Mastermind pets are completely expendable so #3 is not that big of a problem.
5. Make sure to bring lots of catnip with you if you go to the pocket D on the virtue server, there are lots of catgirls there.
6. Everybody makes a catgirl, you will too. Just nobody admits it.
7. Kill Skullz, Run Faster and FREEM!.
Enhancements can be sold at any store, but you'll get a bigger profit by selling them at the same type of store as the type of the enhancement. (i.e. sell Natural enhancements at the Natural store, Technology enhancements at the Technology store, etc.)
It's a SuperGroup not a Guild.
They are Missions not Quests.
Your look is up to you, nothing you wear affects performance.
Make Alts, nothing says you can only play one character.
Don't advertise yourself as a Healorz, you are a defender.
Turn off Quills in WentWorths...
Maestro Mavius - Infinity
Capt. Biohazrd - PCSAR
Talsor Tech - Talsorian Guard
Keep Calm & Chive On!
Defeated mobs do not leave loot lying around to be divided up after a fight; there is nothing for you to 'ninja', and 'need or greed' means nothing to the RNG that decides who gets a drop.
Running in to make the last attack on an almost-defeated mob only gets you as much XP as the share of the total damage you did; you can't 'steal' kills, and the person you ran in on is still going to get credit for the defeat.
"But in our enthusiasm, we could not resist a radical overhaul of the system, in which all of its major weaknesses have been exposed, analyzed, and replaced with new weaknesses."
-- Bruce Leverett, Register Allocation in Optimizing Compilers
Use your inspirations. More of them will drop quickly. I still have to fight the tendency in myself to hoard consumables since other online games had taught me that potions/scrolls/etc could be expensive or difficult to replace. In CoH they drop frequently and can be cheaply purchased (at least the low level ones) from various NPCs.

A true Defender uses attacks. A Defender with no attacks is, like my avatar, just as slapstick as a Mastermind with no pets.
Additionally, feel free to leave Shadow Fall off all the time, and never ever summon any demons.
2. Death is just another badge. 7. Kill Skullz, Run Faster and FREEM! |
Ryu's right about getting a badge for "death", so I'd also suggest "dying" and quickly to get over the fear of "breaking" your shiny new creation. You'll find the penalties are minimal, and almost not noteworthy. Don't abandon your team in a tough fight just to stay alive (saw a lot of that back when I started in 2004).
If you do fall in battle, three of a kind with inspirations can be changed into another kind of inspiration, such as the aqua-colored resurrection inspirations.
Also, (do free players have mail?), well at least any new paid players, it is handy to mail to yourself a few extra inspirations, which you can access during a mission. Use your "@global name" to send to yourself.
1. You will die in missions. Especially in low level teams. Don't snarl at your teammates and ragequit.
2. There is a star rating system in this game (global, not just per character). Certain behavior will be noted by other players and could make it harder for you to get teams in the future.
3. Stop and smell the roses. Don't rush to get to level 50 and miss all of the content.
4. It would probably be best to avoid AE farms until you have at least 1 level 50. You need to learn the mechanics of the game.
5. There are many chat channels that you can join to help you find teams and/or help with missions.

Enemy conning works slightly different in CoH.
- In other games, you're expected to just be able to defeat a single even con (white) enemy. In CoH, most, if not all, characters are easily able to handle three. Some can handle much, much more.
- On the same note, you can usually take down yellows and oranges, too. Pay attention to the mob type, though. Boss class mobs are much tougher than Minions.
- Related, in CoH a "Boss" class is still just another generic member of the groups you're fighting. The real tough enemies are Elite Bosses, Archvillains, and Giant Monsters. A good build can take out most Elite Bosses, an extraordinary one can take on Archvillains. Giant Monsters usually means you need a team. Usually.
- Some special enemies have their own type. Like "Hamidon" class. Hamidon is a raid monster and doesn't play by normal conning rules.

Actually its "Kill Skuls" though I've seen variations on it. The link will tell you the origins of this long-standing community battlecry.

Oh i know the origins...but I was gone for a year so I flubbed the meme.
My personal "lawbook" for newbies;
1} Forget everything. Yes, everything. Including that thing. And that other thing too.
2} If you're having fun, you're doing it right.
3} It's the journey.
4} No harm, no foul.
5} When in doubt, ask. When certain, answer.
6} Experience trumps XP.
7} Present your best side. Expect the same.
While I'll admit I've never made a catgirl, I have made a flying robot ninja pirate.
Unless, of course, you've gimped yourself into not taking and slotting your attacks. The guys over on the Defender boards call such a gimp a "healer" even if the primary isn't a healing set. A true Defender uses attacks. A Defender with no attacks is, like my avatar, just as slapstick as a Mastermind with no pets. Additionally, feel free to leave Shadow Fall off all the time, and never ever summon any demons. |
When you want to joing a team,a good practise is advising, "lvl [X] (Archetype) lft."
It's LFT not LFG.
And yes , debt is meaningless in the long run and that's a good thing.
Pinnacle & Virtue:
A bunch of Heroes - Alpha Team, Legion of Order.
A bunch of Villains -Black Citadel , Pinnache.

I mean, imagine the Intranet if people all followed #5!
Quote of the moment: This, too, shall pass.
Justice superteamers: We have a website now, in case the forums get closed early. If you've ever run with us, come visit us again before the curtain falls. We're running bucket list characters--anything you've always wanted to play but never got around to.
Newbs need to know about the Player Notes system and how to toggle it on. They need to learn they can star other players.
This will allow them to spot friends at a distance and in crowds, maybe even help identify people they don't want to team with.
