Where do the archetypes rank (in fun) for you?

Tied for my favourites:
Brutes. All aboard the fury train! As sturdy as a tank in normal PVE content, but with the addition of the demented steamroller playstyle and big orange numbers everywhere you go.
Corruptors. Buffs for the team, debuff the enemies. By that point the mobs are probably on about half health. Drop your biggest AOE. SCOURGE!

Enjoyable:
Fortunatas. Mine is built as a scraptroller, which might not be the most efficient way to play, but it is cool to make a guy scream inside his head while you skewer him.
Blasters. Damage and more damage, always fun, but I always feel their secondaries leave something to be desired.

Problematic (I want to like these, but I have an issue with how they play):
Controllers. Solidly locking down a huge mob is a lot of fun, but not being able to *do anything* with all these held enemies is frustrating. On a full team, not an issue, but in a 2 or 3 man group it winds me up. I also resent having to go find someone to help me because I need a mish badge for an accolade or similar and there's no way I can do it by myself. (The controllers I've rolled have been low dmg powersets though (ice/ and earth/), so I appreciate I don't have a complete overview of the AT. A fire/ or ill/ would probably make me change my mind.)
Stalkers. I find the assassin playstyle a lot of fun, maybe I just like ATs with big orange words to go with their big orange numbers. However in practice it becomes build up->assassin strike->scrap scrap scrap->eek red health->run away->repeat, which doesn't make you feel very super.

Meh (I'll play these if a particular powerset takes my interest or has some unique feature, but not in general):
Defenders. Every time I play one I wish I could scourge.
Tankers. All of the sturdy with none of the killy.
Scrappers. I want to like scrappers more, as they are a solid AT and extremely deadly, but the random crit mechanic just doesn't grab me as much as the immediacy of the fury mechanic.
Masterminds. Fallen out with masterminds, I've tried two and the micromanaging of the pets has lost my interest.

Not enough experience to say:
Dominators. I really want to like dominators but I've never got one high enough level to see for myself how powerful they are when built well. I expect if I ever get my current one (plant/fire) into the 30s and permadom'd that I will love him to bits.
HEATs. Never played either type past the Hollows.
Spiders of both kinds. Don't have one.
Night Widows. Don't have one.

TL;DR: Fun play for me is a combo of good damage and damage mitigation. I also like the inherents that change your gameplay. Hence, for me, the villain hybrid ATs are the most fun.

My most favorite "ATs" are:

  1. Those for which I have a neat concept ...
  2. ... or costume ...
  3. ... or with the prettiest powers.
Unless they happen to be (i.e., these are my least favorites):
  1. Scrappers,
  2. Blasters,
  3. Dominators, or
  4. Masterminds
I pretty much enjoy all the ATs except the four above. In fact, there's probably more disparity among liked or disliked powersets within each AT then between the ATs themselves.

OTOH, I don't care how cool the concept, costume, or powers, I've simply never been able to get into scrappers, blasters, dominators, or masterminds:
  1. Scrappers are odd, since I absolutely love tanks, really like stalkers, and like brutes. Maybe I just like the special those ATs bring more than what scrappers bring?
  2. Blasters simply have too many click powers, that are all too similar in utility (i.e. "click me for damage!") for my tastes.
  3. I should probably like Dominator's but, again, find they have too many click powers. (I'd love to have Dominator secondaries on Defenders or Corruptors, though!)
  4. I like pet classes in other games, and thought I'd really enjoy masterminds. Maybe they're just too much of a "good" thing?

I'll have to stick with just my favorites and least favorites, with the rest just falling somewhere in between (in various orders, based on how I'm felling on a particular day):

1. Controllers
2/3. Scrappers/Brutes
4. SoA

11. Defenders
12. Kheldians

I just can't get used to Defenders or Kheldians, no matter how much I try. I also have some trouble with Dominators, despite the fact that they should be "Controllers +" for me (they just aren't). I keep trying them, though.

Please try my arcs:

Arc# 63910 "Why Do Bad Girls Like Bad Boys?" (length=Long, levels 40+)
Arc# 401500 "How to Be a Successful Professional Criminal" (length=Very Long, levels 1-10)

Babysitting that little 'domination' button is an annoyance.
I know that's my biggest issue with Dominators. I wish they weren't balanced around that little button.

My primary love has always been Scrappers. Massive damage, and can be built to be nearly as tough as a brute or tank.

My most recent 50's have been two brutes and a corruptor, and I'm really enjoying the one brute and the corruptor a lot. At the moment those are my favorite characters, aside from my scrappers and my widow.

I've tried just about every AT. I don't hate any of them, except possibly my Peacebringer, but none of them are as fun as the above. My fire blaster, for example... is fun, but the fire/kin corruptor does so much more. I have a lot of Defenders, but the corruptor does more.

6. MMs if I can get a concept going

Scrappers, Brutes are easy mode and boring- if you can't kill everything with 4 armors, a heal, and End power and full status protection, you should feel shame. I have tried and tried to like Controllers and I just can't get past the low damage early on. Warshades are powerful but too "busy" for me to enjoy. Can't get into most Defenders (but I do have a 45 TA/A thanks to Luminara's guide), insta-delete Tanks in the Tutorial, and (at least currently) Peacebringers are worse than wet socks on a campout.

Ideally, the tank will die precisely as everyone else starts fighting, allowing aggro to be spread evenly among the blaster. -seebs, "How to Suck at CoH/CoV" Guide

1) Defenders
2) Scrappers

A bunch in the middle with the differences based far more on power choice or concept that AT...

And pretty much tied at the bottom of the heap

Masterminds, Blasters, Peacebringers

I frankly don't have any idea what could be done to make PBs more fun for me, personally, but I think a new secondary might do the trick for Blasters (although, I don't know what that secondary would look like) and a new Primary or Seconday or maybe even just pet skins, might be enough for me to get into a MM.

MM's used to be very close at the top of the list for me. My first character was a Necro/Dark and it was fun soloing AV's before IO's and all that.

Over the years I've became more of a powergamer and on fast paced teams they lag behind, especially on speed runs. I don't play them anymore, but I can still respect how awesome and unbeatable they can be solo.

I think that's true. The power of Masterminds is not in dispute. But the AT feels very hands-off to me. I like the visceral thrill I get from melee or directly shooting something in the face.

The City of Heroes Community is a special one and I will always look fondly on my times arguing, discussing and playing with you all. Thanks and thanks to the developers for a special experience.

My list.

1: Tanks
2: Controllers
3-9: Corruptors /Dominators/Brutes/Scrappers/Blasters/Masterminds/Defenders (in no particular order)
10/11: VEATS/ HEATS
12: Stalkers

I placed Stalkers last because I have yet to find a stalker combination I like. I'm trying out a ninja/ninja currently. The VEATS/HEATS are towards the end of the list as I'm really only getting around to leveling up a few of them.

Anything level 50+ is an agonizing exercise in attrition. Nobody cares about being defeated. I can't STAND finishing a task force with 10+ defeats and it says Mission Completed. I don't care for the Useless S Grant method of combat at all.

While I agree wholeheartedly, is this really the right thread?

This is about archetypes...

But it really depends, I'm hella-enjoying a Traps/Beam defender at the mo, far more than my i21 Corruptor or Controller alts (I've discovered I just don't like Time).
