It's been a fun ride, and I'm going to miss the game a lot, but I guess it's time to move on. I do want to take a screenshot of each alt and transcribe their origin stories before the game shuts down.

Good-bye everyone. Hope to see you all in other games in the future!
  2. This is a really stupid question, but I've been away from the game for an extended amount of time.

When I log on, all of the boxes on-screen (chat box, power trays, map, etc.) are so small that I can barely see them. I can't remember how to enlarge them so they're actually usable again. I've gone all through the Options menu, but I just don't see how to enlarge them. The main screen itself looks fine and exactly as I remember it.

    Help!

    Where to now?

I used to play CO back when it first came out, and may end up going back there. I liked the free-form builds you could do, the END-builder attacks, the perfect aim, and the blocking. The graphics were something I could never get used to, and the jokey attitude throughout the game was off-putting.

When CO came out, they stressed how different they were from CoX. I recently read all about the CO updates over the years, and it appears they've spent considerable amount of time and effort aping CoX (archetypes, mirror universe, etc.). Still, not a bad game.

I really enjoy Star Trek Online, although I've gottena little burned out on the Starbase building grind lately. STO is a fun game, even if you're not a Star Trek fan. Plus, the space battles are awesome!

I've been playing a lot of Batman:Arkham City lately. Sure, its a single-player game, but boy is it fun! Lots of good superhero action here.

I've never tried DCUO, but will give it a shot next.

I'm going to miss CoX. I spent a shocking % of my lifetime playing this game, and having great fun doing it.
  4. I can't get the game to launch at all. I haven't logged on in a few months, so when I go through all the patching, I get an error that I need to click on "Repair" to get the game to work. "Repair does nothing, and all I get is errors. I get a LONG log automatically placed onto my computer. Below is a small section of it.

I'd appreciate any help I can get. I've played CoH for 8 years as of next Friday, and I wanted to continue to play until the lights are turned off.
  5. I'm (finally) getting a new computer, but wanted o know what I need to do in order to get CoH onto it.

Do I just download the game from the Internet?

Do I need to do something with the Launcher, or will it automatically download when I give it my userid and password?

Should I copy all of my CoH directory from my current computer onto my new one?

    Thanks!

P.S.-I'm a paid player, if that makes any difference.
  6. Wow, thanks for sending me the e-mail today about the Black Friday sale! Just because it ended 2 weeks ago is no reason to let a glossy advertisement go to waste, I suppose!

Also, the ad for the "new" German Shephard! AND, an add for episode 3 of the weekly arc! All mailed on Dec. 8.
  7. Thanks for the information!

I've really enjoyed First Ward (the missions and the map). It reminds me a little of Faultline, with its dedicated contacts and self-contained stories. (I still run all my heroes through the Faultline arcs.)

I never could get into the Croatoa arcs, though, as they were a bit more tedious (especially those big outdoor maps). I love the Fir Bolg, but those RedCaps are nasty little devils!
  8. Yes, Paragon Wiki's articles on First Ward are still "under construction". There doesn't seem to be anything past Vanessa there. Since I also ran out of story at that point, I wanted to know if that's actually the end of the First Ward arc, or if Paragon Wiki and I both just hit the same brick wall.
  9. I have 2 alts in First Ward right now. The first one has gained 4 levels there and has just finished Vanessa DeVore's story arc. Is that it? I can't find any other contacts, and Vanessa didn't send me to anyone else, either.

I've enjoyed these missions, but I think I may be finished with them. If so, they kind of sputtered out at the end. If not, could someone direct me to my next contact?

    Thanks.
  10. I like this idea! I remember something like this (a cartoon) when I was little, where a little boy with a crayon could draw what we wanted and it would come to life (a door in a wall to eacape, a hole under his sister so she fell, an anvil overhead to crash onto someone's head). Lots of possibilities.

I hereby reserve the name Vincent van GoGo!
  11. If you want to play /Storm, I highly recommend Earth/Storm for theme. At low levels, you'll be very powerful on teams, and you'll really feel that you're contributing a LOT to the effort. The amount of control you wield is amazing. You'll be able to pick and choose which powerful combo you'd like to unleash on each enemy groups (the variety keeps it interesting).

As noted above, though, soloing is tough until you get Animate Stone, Tornado, and Lightning Storm in the 30s. Then, you'll be able to crank up the difficulty as high as you like and have at it!
  12. I built my Fire/Rad for Recharge. You want to have AM up as often as possible, whether you're in a team or solo. Also, with high levels of Rechg, you can have Flashfire up every fight, Cinders and EM Pulse up for AoE Holds, and your debuffs working almost constantly. With the controls you have with Fire/ and /Rad, you'll rarely face an opponent capable of hitting you.
  13. I like the ability to play Loyalist or Resistance, and the sub-factions within each of these. However, I learned early on that if you play Loyalist, you spend most of your time above ground, enjoying the sight of the beuatifully-rendered zones of Praetoria. if you play resistance, most of your 1-20 play experience will be underground in those nasty, claustrophobic tunnels, fighting Ghouls. I HATE the Ghouls!

I've taken many alts through Praetoria. Brutes and Scrappers are great, rarely dying. Controllers/Corruptors/Doms, though, are like pulling teeth. My Elec/Ice Dom never made it past level 15 before getting deleted out of utter frustration.

No matter the AT, leveling up is much slower than red or blue side. This COULD be okay, if the leveling up made you feel like you were accomplishing something worthwhile. Instead, it just feels harder and slower and more frustrating than red/blue side.

I'm currently running one alt (a former Praetorian Brute) through First Ward, and enjoying it very much. I have no idea how many story arcs are there, or if they all come together into a single story (I hope they do), but I'm getting several levels from brand new content, so I'm happy about that!
  14. I played a StJ/EA Brute on beta with some good success. However, after Issue 21 came out, I jumped the gun and made a Stone/EA Brute, who I like a lot.

This time, I made a StJ/Elec Scrapper. He's pretty good so far, so I'm happy to have him and his cousin, the Stone/EA Brute, to alternate with!
  15. Stone/EA is a very good pairing. I started mine recently (lvl 24 right now) and he's really good. He does good damage (plenty of screen-shaking for atmosphere) and /EA has a nice mix of Def and Resist.
  16. My Gravity/Kinetics Controller is a Troll who used to be a street-level dealer of Superdine. Now that he's reformed, he GIVES Superdine away to his hero friends and himself to add a "boost" in their heroic efforts, and gives his enemies Bad Trips via overdoses and/or contaminated drugs.
  17. I have the same problem as Rad. At work, the landing page has a button that takes me to the Forums just fine. However, at home, that button doesn't exist. All I get is "Search the Site" (which doesn't work) and "Language".

I have to go through the "Learn More" button and click a few times to get here.
  18. GGG247

    ??/Ea

I second the Stone/EA recommendation. I started mine recently and really enjoy playing him. He hits hard and can take a punch. He's in First Wrad right now. I'm taking it slow at the moment because I want to read all the dialog and find out what's going on.

    This is a fun character!
  19. Very nice Guide! I love playing my Controllers, and 2 of mine are Incarnates, but I still managed to pick up some useful tips here.

Also, I really like the format you used. It makes it easy to read (and take notes in the margins).
  20. I came to the same conclusion yesterday with my 7 year old Stone/Stone Tanker.

I gave him a full respec and got his speeds up (GotA's among others) to about 6 mph, but still found him less fun and more suseptible to problems (psionic mainly) than my INV Brute. I won't delete him, as he's my first character I ever created in CoH, but I don't plan on playing him again either.
  21. I'll have to stick with just my favorites and least favorites, with the rest just falling somewhere in between (in various orders, based on how I'm felling on a particular day):

    1. Controllers
    2/3. Scrappers/Brutes
    4. SoA

    11. Defenders
    12. Kheldians

I just can't get used to Defenders or Kheldians, no matter how much I try. I also have some trouble with Dominators, despite the fact that they should be "Controllers +" for me (they just aren't). I keep trying them, though.
  22. Controllers are my favorite, and my level 50 Earth/Storm is my favorite character (and most powerful).

What a chore to solo prior to level 32! What a joy to solo after level 32! What a joy to team from 1-50!
  23. Defenders are my least-favorite AT. I've tried many different combinations and just can't get into them. I currently have 1 Defender, a level 41 TA/Archery, who I enjoy playing occasionally. Basically, I like the character rather than the actual powers/abilities.

He does okay on teams, but I never feel like I'm contributing a LOT. Also, he's my only alt who's never been able to solo a mission--ever.

Dominators SHOULD be my favorite to play (controls coupled with damage!). I kind of find them boring, though, and I don't know why.

For individual powersets, I'm not a big fan of Stone Armor (too many penalties), Willpower (effective but dull--the insurance salesman of the game), /Poison (the existing or the new), Sonic/ for Blasters (purely for the sound effects), and most Ice/ or /Ice (again, for the sound effects).
  24. Yikes, I had no idea the Gladiator 3% was so high! That won't be going into the build!

Thanks for the advice, plainguy. I (sadly) think you're probably right about Trip Mine. I enjoy placing those things before a fight and luring enemies into my trap, but it sure takes a long time to play this way.

I respecced last night (and hit level 32) and purchased one set of Thunderstrike for Burst. It'll be awhile before I can get the rest slotted and ready. I'm relying on my snipe and Slug to take out the first enemy in any group, then Beanbag/Taser and Flamethrower on the others. Now with Full Auto, this should speed things up a bit.

Unlike my other Blasters, this character plays like a ranged Stalker. It's an interesting change of pace. Once I get his defenses up and get more damage on him, I think he'll be able to speed up his "arrest" rate.

EDIT--My love for Trip Mines comes from a fight I had on my Ice/Traps Corruptor years ago. I was soloing a mission with Silver Mantis in it (maybe an Arch-Villain). She was tearing me apart over and over again. I finally figured out that 4 separate sets of 4 Trip Mines each was the key. I laid out my mines and threw caltrops on the first set. Then I aggroed her. The first set of 4 barely made a dent in her, the second set slowed her down some, the 3rd set took a decent amount of hp and staggered her, while the 4th set stunned her and brough her hp down to about 10%. Acid Mortar and my Ice/ powers did the rest. Still my favorite moment in CoH!
  25. This thread has been a real eye-opener. My level 31 AR/Devices alt has been shelved for 2 years. As I recall, I got stuck doing a Redcap mission in Croatoa and got so fed up with all the ambushes and dying that I gave up.

This thread has renewed my interest in the character, though. Based on some of the great advice I've read, here's what I put together:
