I had a guy tell me in-game they were absolutely certain I was a girl because I typed in complete sentences.

I have no joke for that, I just like pointing it out occasionally. I think it speaks for itself.

Apparently, that guy would think I was a girl as well then. I'd rather be wordy than have people try to put words in my mouth.

Not like they don't do that anyway, but it's not due to me not stating things as fully as possible.

I am astonished that this topic is still thriving without being locked down after 17 pages.. Kudos to the CoH community for keeping it civil, even in such a controversial and touchy type of discussion.

(Yea, I know ... ) I also have a lot of female characters and apparently I make them in a way that looks like they were made by a girl, or so people tell me. I take it as a compliment.
What, because guys are all jerks? Heh, I've found that a lot of people who are hardasses here on the forums are much, much nicer in-game. I don't know if that's because we come to the forums to argue but log into the game to play or what, but a lot of times it's just how things go.

When it comes to making female characters "like they were made by a girl," I think I fail at this. HARD. I say "think" mostly because there's never really been a good definition of how "a girl" makes characters. Usually, when this comes up, swarms of women come in and confess they make intentionally revealing costumes because that's just what they like to play as. Bad Influence once commented on using the "Strappy Shoes" costume piece as evidence for G.I.R.L., I suppose because they kind of match some men's shoe fetish, but it's still kind of hard to tell.

I suppose one easy way to tell a sleezy *** is when you spot a player playing a character who looks like (and is named, as I've seen) "Dirty HO." Things like a string bikini with an Eden top is pretty strong evidence that - as I know first hand - someone was trying to make a naked lady and this was as naked as he could make her. That I can attribute to a lech, but everything else? I don't know. "Revealing" doesn't carry a negative connotation with me, but considering I ignored Golden Girl for calling me a "pervert," I may be biassed.

I suppose if I had to draw a line when it comes to female costumes, at the border when tasteful costumes with skin turn into tasteless sleeze. So long as it has artistic merit, I suppose you could say (and that in itself is pretty loaded when people start arguing about "the beauty of the human body), it's still a good costume that happens to be revealing. That's as opposed to a revealing one that just happens to also be a costume by necessity of game limitations.

Long story short (too late), I'm not sure how much this looks like it was made by a woman, but a character can be sexy and revealing and still be tasteful and classy.

Ha! I love that argument for much the same reason you do, I suspect It's even more funny to me since English isn't actually my first language, but I still get to show up Americans and Brits at their own game. Eloquence and good spelling - to me at least - are a sign that people care about they present themselves. Putting in a few extra seconds to start a sentence with a capital letter, end a question with a question mark, type out "thanks" instead of "tnx" and suchforth just strikes me as someone who respects himself or herself. And in turn, this is a person I can respect.

Another player who claimed to be a female once acted surprised to learn I was a bloke running a female character. At first I took it as a compliment on my role playing but then she said she just assumed I was a woman because my character wasn't dressed like a ****

In my experience, the most grammatically correct english speakers rarely state english as their first language.

Generally if I don't have time to write out a few extra letters to make it a proper word, I don't have time to write anything. The straw that broke the camels back for me was Y2K. Seriously, it is less work to hit a 2 and three 0's.

I would never say I am the most grammatically correct speaker/writer, but at least I make the effort.

Yeah the "types in complete sentences" indicator doesn't usually make me automatically assume the person is male or female.
It mostly steers me towards whether or not I think the person in question is over 30 or under 30.

From my perspective, the other 11 months of the year....and Im a white male. I dont mind the various history months. Lets take the time to celebrate and highlight other cultures, it doesnt cost me anything to do so.

Hey! Don't you dare age me a year! That's all I've got until I turn "old!"

I fall into this category.

Lets face it: I'm a dick sometimes, and I know it. For some reason, things I read on the forums stand a much better chance of irritating me than things I read in-game. And I tend to spout off when I get annoyed. It's just how I am.

Anyone who dislikes me on the forums would probably be very surprised if they ended up on a team with me in the game. It's almost like my forum and in-game personalities are 2 completely different people. Not sure why, I'm the same guy with the same thoughts. Maybe I can just blow things off easier when I'm playing a game than when I'm reading stuff on a screen.

I never claimed making assumptions about people based on how they write was strictly a good thing but clearly we all do it regardless even if it's on an unconscious level. I guess in the context of this thread that makes me an "ageist" of some sort.

I'm by no means a "nitpicky English language nerd" but I do think it's a pretty easy leap of faith to equate a mature style of writing to a mature person. If that means I end up mistaking a very well spoken 20 year old for someone much older I'm willing to accept that. Likewise if there's a 50 year old out there who writes like a 3rd grader then, well, that's what I'm going to assume I'm dealing with until I know otherwise.

Except, they don't actually set time aside to celebrate the accomplishments of white males. It's all covered in History class, unless they've changed it since I graduated. But then, so is Black History, Women's History, Asian American History, American Indian History, American Filipino History, etc, etc, etc.

If you're going to be fair, which I like to be, there should be a White Male History Month to go along with all the other <special> History months out there.

The "black history," "women's history," etc. were deliberately created because in western society, History class is "celebration of white dudes." Though I guess how realistic that is goes back to where a person is educated, but it certainly was true of my own upbringing/education. To learn about the great things non-white dudes did meant reading (very) occasional asides about the occasional female/non-European descent person. These were only punctuating the long passages on generals, inventors, scientists and philosophers of a very decided lineage. Learning more about other cultures (or even sub-cultures) often required me to seek books/courses 'off the beaten path.'

But again, your mileage may vary based on where/when you received your education.

If attendance at the Meet and Greets for CoH is any indication, CoH has a very large female population.

If this was a widespread problem, I would assume that it would have been addressed by now.
