THE perfect Brute for the ITF

I've noticed a lot of folks have Darkest Night in their builds. Does that really make that much of a difference for survivability for such a high end cost?

Don't I know you???

Posted

Yes. It does. Especially against even con enemies.

Darkest Night is the difference between living comfortably at x3 with my dark/dark brute and x8. That's pretty substantial.

Another benefit is that it allows more wiggle room in the the build. My build posted has a native 45% smash/lethal defense so I don't have it. Fiery-Enforcers build only has 32% smash/lethal but has darkest night. Against even level mobs his will have superior survivability because the -to hit pushes ALL his defenses up effectively, surpassing mine. To say nothing off blunting the damage that does hit him because of the -toDamage. By not having to scrimp and save every set bonus into smash/lethal defense he has room to slot about 65% more global recharge.

As for endurance cost - well, as a ss/fire you're only going to have to pay it for a few seconds.

Weight training: Because you'll never hear someone lament "If only I were weaker, I could have saved them."

Okay, so, we just did the Duo ITF on Freedom (thread on the Freedom server) and we had a SS/FA Brute (PUMMEL) and the FA/Elec Tank I posted above.

You guys were SO right. I believe if I had it to do over again, I would have made EB a brute so I could've skipped the tier 1 attack and gotten Chain Induction instead. Wow! I died twice. Once because I was stupid and wasn't paying attention to the debuff stacks from a bunch of bosses, minotaurs and cyclops on the 3rd map, and once about half way into the final Rommie fight.

His SS/FA Brute was devastating! Rage + Fury = LOTS of folks dropping during Foot Stomp. I think if he'd had the same IOs I had, he would have died once or twice.

A SS/FA Brute has nasty ST attacks and Foot Stomp was awesome. I DO think Electrical Melee is preferable for AoEs, but overall the damage was better with SS.

I hate to de-rail this thread, but I always see people say electric melee is good at aoe damage. I have an electric/SR scrapper and I have always felt the aoe on elec was ok but not as amazing as others say.

Lightning Rod is genius. Thunder Strike is ok but the animation feels slow. For some reason chain induction feels skimpy. Jacobs ladder is one of those narrow cones that personally I am unskilled with, I never hit more than two foes.

So sure, lots of aoe, but a lot of it seems inconvenient.

After elec, which set has the most convenient aoe in the primary?

For me, most convenient = PBAoE or targeted AoE, with radius as wide as possible.

So that's SS first (15' on Foot Stomp) and SM second (15' on Tremor, lower damage and slower animation than FS), pairing it with Shield for Shield Charge (which is... 20', I think?), ideally with Ball Lightning, Dark Obliteration or Fire Ball (all 15' TAoE) as an epic choice.

Convenient is a very subjective term. Super Strength might be convenient to one person due to Foot Stomp's ease of use, while it would be intolerable to another due to the rage crash.

Claws may be convenient to one person due to the sheer amount of AoE powers, while the positioning required to execute them would be inconvenient to another.

Fair enough.

I dont mind the rage crash, or rather if I blow a stomp while crashed, I shrug and continue. Radius is a big issue for me, and I prefer not to think about targeting or position.

I guess that would make super strength best for me.

I guess it also explains why I dont find electric's aoe to make up for its mediocre single target damage: impatience, or a lack of willingness to position correctly. I treat jacobs ladder as a single target attack, and if I am in scrapperlock mode (as I always am) then I will waste chain shock on a killing blow (wasting the aoe). So I like electric but I dont utilize it as effectively as I should.

Claws is a set I love, but in a way I see now that I dont always position as well as I should. I usually just Spin whenever I can, shockwave just whenever I feel like it, and otherwise just slop through fights. I have fun but I am not efficient.

I am a bit confused...why would someone not be willing to share a build of theirs? It seems the only reason would be for PvP purpose, which is a miniscule concern. Other then that it seems like you're just being oddly selfish about something that would have no direct effect to your ability to enjoy the game.

It may seem that someone is being selfish (I assume you're referring to ultrawatt) when they don't post their own build, it may even be true (I am not saying it is ultrawatt), but it is not the ONLY reason avoid posting a personal build.

One 'good' reason not to post a build is to avoid un-wanted/un-needed nerf hammers. If you've figured out a way to push a particular combination into realms of performance (without a perceived 'balancing' drawback) that'll make people jealous you can, inadvertently, cause harm to the combination as a whole by inciting a 'balancing' nerf. If your 'secret-formula' stays with you and doesn't proliferate then there is no need for a global change as your build is an anomaly and not the norm.

There are many other reasons as well but I thought I'd give you at least that one.

I have some really, really horrible builds. I'd be glad to post them if they would result in w/e the opposite of nerfing is.

Once I posted my fire/storm to help someone out, and all I got was folks pointing out how stupid I was to slot this power that way or how I was missing out on 2% in another. It got a bit annoying, since I liked the build the way it was and was too lazy to respec just for pretty minor improvements.

Yeah it's funny I played with some people who 'never post builds' before my hiatus and I saw some of them... Ok they were very expensive but nothing that had some super secret I couldn't find out or build (if I were rich) by playing the toon to 50 - because of course the builds were very well made and I couldn't build them without playing the sets extensively. Very expensive, very efficient, very good builds, but nothing 'omg that makes the powersets so much more powerful'

Here's the build i run on my SS/Fire Brute. I love this girl but have been running her through so many trials I need a break on her. Yes the build is "very expensive" but I also built her over the last year or so focusing almost entirely on her.
