Call me crazy, but I'm sure Freedom is the best thing to happen to this game.

Joking aside, today is the last day of my currently paid subscription. Freedom had me reconsidering letting it expire, but I'm starting to think I'd prefer to be part of the community that will become Freems and Preems than the part that will become VIPs. I enjoy interacting with that community (in game) far more than with this one (out of game).

I for one will miss your brand of posting even if it was a bit abrasive at times.

Then again I'd miss Another_fan >.> maybe.

Hey let's not go being offensive by comparing Eiko-chan to Je_saist!

Nothing Eiko has done deserves that kind of abuse.

You should apologies.

Couldn't you do that by paying the sub, and just not reading the forums?

We, the superheroes of Paragon City, are what will make this work. And I don't mean we as in me and you and every other you reading this. I mean we as a community.

People come to this game to be superheroes, but they stay for the community. These new Freepers or Freeks or whatever you want to call them are going to come here to get in some tights and knock some people around. They'll have a blast, we know they will, because this game is fun. At the end of the day, though, you can only bust so many skulls by yourself. They're going to look for more reason to stay.

And they will find it in our community! But only if you show them. Stay on your home server and engage as many of these freeks as you can. Take them on high level teams, show them what characters are capable of, what fun can be had spending time with friends. Lead them on low level TFs, show them the joys of supersidekicking and never leaving friends behind because you're too high level. Show them that you don't need to exclude a friend because you never need a tank or a healer or a DPSer or anything else for that last spot. That they only need superheroes. Or supervillains. Or super rogues and vigilantes and praetorians and aliens and angels and demons and even catgirls. Let them know that you just need to be with friends and you can accomplish anything.

Show them these things, and they'll fall in love with this community just like you did. Just like I did. The game will be able to grow and prosper, which leads to more development resources, which leads to a better game experience for all of us.

I ask you just one more thing before I end this post.

Hold me to the same.
You forgot the "This is Spartaaaa!" at the end.

But yeah, since its about community, I agree, its all us.

I think we all suspected this coming to some degree. I've played other F2P games and I couldn't stand them... the whole atmosphere just felt so cheap on those games. They just didn't feel like quality titles, but more of a 'Hey, you get what you pay for.' feel. My biggest worry about CoX going F2P was mainly just the fact that it was now stooping to that level and that the perspective on the game would just change. Once again, my experience so far with other titles is 'F2P = Crap Game'.

The more I think of it though, this will only inject new life in to the game I already know is a great game. I already know a few IRL people who've I've tried to get to play the game but they just don't like paying sub fees on games. They're looking forward to trying out Freedom when it goes live. The game won't really change any for existing subs, if anything, it sounds like it's becoming better.

The past couple of years we've been getting nickel and dimed on booster packs so having to spend Paragon Points that we get automatically for being VIPs doesn't seem any different to me. Plus, if this new model means getting more content that's totally cool with me, even if I've gotta pay a bit extra for it.

CoX has been giving us the royal treatment throughout it's life with constant FREE issue updates and improvements. The reality is, it's no longer as profitable as it once was so now it's our turn to help out and do our part to make sure it continues being the game we've all enjoyed and loved...

...at least until CoH 2 comes out.

You're welcome I figure we're all equal people here in the game, and if want to be treated with respect and consideration, then it only makes sense for that practice to start with me. I like to help people when I can, and I like the fact that whenever I need help, all I have to do is ask and other helpers will usually have answers and solutions for me pretty much on the spot. It's what makes our community as positive as it is, occasional personality clashes aside - you can always get help and you can always contribute to helping others, and that's seen as the norm here.

I wouldn't go as far as to organise events for new players, though. I'm not a leader (too much work) and I figure the game ought to have better tools to handle that server-side anyway. I've spoken on behalf of an auto-team feature before, and I feel one is more necessary than ever before now that we're expecting a large influx of new players that may not always be aware of the kinks in our unspoken etiquette. Sure, auto-teams may sometimes end up underpowered or with all unprepared people, but I still consider that superior to not finding a team at all.

Generally speaking, I find that approaching other people with patience, understanding and the notion that there's a real person on the other end just as entitled to having a fun gaming experience as you are is the right attitude to take out into the field. I figure as long as most VIPs exhibit that, the Free players will sort the rest out for themselves.

Dechs, I really have nothing more that I could add to this post...

I've been saying it since we started preparing for this announcement, the Community of City of Heroes is our strongest selling point. For the past 7 years you've continually supported us and each other in a way that I can only refer to as inspiring. I have no doubt that we're going to be successful in pulling new players in, and the utmost confidence that the reason they're going to stick around is you guys, the awesome Community...oh yeah and there's a bunch of other cool stuff too... .

thanks dechs, i was goin to make a similar post, but there's a 50/50 chance the forum would eat my post, so ill just say that soon will be a good time to really prove our label as a helpful community. cant wait to see some more new players, and blind half of them with my outfits. i can be a mentor and a cautionary tale about proper accessorizing.

I hope you're right - but my biggest concern about Freedom is how limited the Free players are in terms of participating in the community, or even realizing that the community is around them. The one channel they get is /help, which means /help is going to be utterly useless for actual help when it becomes the lft/general bull channel.

Even Premium users will be hugely limited, cut off from much of the fun and interaction.

I tried the competition, speaking cryptically, and the reason I didn't stick with it was that they never got the importance of community. I tried it when they went Free, and it wasn't any better - but wasn't any worse. If there's anything that will kill this, it's the complete and utter crippling of this game's great community features.

Actually considering another big announcement that happened recently I would say that the whole paradigm of f2p = crap has been smashed flat.

Great post, mate!

I'll try and do my part, when time permits!

Honestly, I have to say that the community can make such an enormous difference.
I'm not even going to say that the reason we stay is about the community...
I love this game. The actual game. I can turn it on and play a few missions solo (and have been doing that) for years and years to come.
Same for on teams...
Same for costume creations, base editing, reading bios, blah blah blah etcetera, etcetera and so on and so forth!!

However, how awesome we all are allows people to get sucked into all of that... It allows a lot more people to give it a chance and to find all of this out for themselves.

I've been around negative environments and... you just want to leave.
They could have free food, be handing out money... if there are a bunch of bastages hanging 'round... I'd want to get out of there ASAP.
The opposite is true for not so great things... If there are a bunch of friendly, well-meaning, fun and happy people... I'd probably enjoy staying!

Now...
Combine a really fun game with awesome, friendly, fun and creative people...
And we can help make this product be as popular and as big as it deserves to be (because this development team deserves a ton of great recognition for taking on challenges, for delivering complex systems in different ways and for achieving common gaming standards in very different ways in order to deliver a product more based on fun for the sake of fun and to be enjoyed by people on a casual basis... and, all the while, they've been real and fun and engaging... who doesn't want that!?!).

I'd love to see this change win big for Paragon Studios and I hope I can influence that some. And by helping Paragon Studios win big, I win too. So will you!!

That being said... General and Epic Pool Power Customization NAO or I tell all freebie players that War Witch eats babies.
