Goofy things you thought when you were new to the game.
It wasn't still I got my main almost to 30 that I found out you could combine enhancements. So if I wanted to upgrade a yellow to a green or white enhancement I had to slot a different type of enhancement or wait till it turned red then I could slot the same enhancement type onto the red enhancement. Needless to say, I had lots of yellow and red enhancements and was almost always broke buying enhancements since I could never sell the enhancements since I needed them to replace the yellow and red one.
I am taking my sig to MWO and MWT. Let them wonder what it means.
I'm in the '1st MMO' camp as well.
I'm guilty of the broadcasting why the train is broken while standing at the exit.
I'm guilty of looking for the save button after my 1st play session was over.
Some of my individual goofs...
On my main, I put slots in Brawl at level 3 and 5... My reasoning was this power would be with me for 50 levels so I'd want it slotted! Doh!
Upon zoning into KR for the fist time at level 5, I come out the exit and immediately see a giant winged demon. I actually thought it was a high level player and fumbled with the right click to read his bio. The Behemoth wasted no time in correcting my error.
My 1st creation was a Blaster. In my head Heroes stand their ground and don't run... So I'd play with that mindset and got really used to the hospital. Wasn't until I came to the forums a month later cause my endurance usage was out of control that I learned how to make a tactical retreat! Big props to SnipeFu's old guide. It's the reason I kept playing for more than a month!!
This one isn't mine but I'll share it anyways.
I talked a real life friend into playing. We were talking on Yahoo while he made his toon and ran the tutorial. I told him I'd be waiting by Mrs. Liberty when he zoned out. While I was waiting I saw a SG buddy and ran over to say hi. He zones out and looks around, sees an NPC civ walking by with my name and proceeds to slowly follow them, thinking it's me in my secret identity costume! I fly over to him in and hit the invite to team. He declines and then says over Yahoo that this high level hero has a cool looking costume. I just said thanks and explained the confusion. ;p

I have a few:
1) I didn't know about the 'combine 3 insp, make 1 insp of your choice' trick. I was looking for a place to buy wakies and a teammate showed me to an arena vendor. The vendor had every insp but a wakie. So I complained that the vendor didn't sell wakies. Ditto for being faceplanted and having a full tray of insp with no wakies.
2) When I was on trial accnt, I was invited to teams lv 20 or higher. When I saw that level, I'd say 'sorry, I'm too low' and quit.
Back in May 2004, my first character hit 5 or 6 and was directed by a contact to go to Galaxy City. I had a PRIMA guide or something with a City map, so I proceeded to Steel Canyon. I made it the IP gate, saw the levels of the spawn there, and I thought there is no way I can make it to King's Row to get to Galaxy. I tried first to go through Perez, but I didn't have security clearance. Then they told me about a 'train'.
The other thing I didn't know, around level 11 and first visiting Steel Canyon was that in those days, there were leftover ambushes and spawns of MUCH higher level that would just hang out until defeated or despawned. I saw this big strange creature between a hedgerow and a skyscraper. It was a level 30+ devouring earth that quickly 2 shot me and sent me teleporting to the hospital.

Me too! I remember taking a minute or two to run all the way back to the door where I came in, and it took me a while to notice that everyone else was just disappearing into thin air. Finally, I worked up the nerve to ask someone, "How are you all getting out without going to the door?
. |
I did the exact same thing. Only did radios on freedom with my first toon and I was lvl 26 when I finally figured out how to get out of a mission quickly...
I came to this game after years of playing MMOs where the Holy Trinity didn't exist ; last I experienced tankers and healers was in 1999 with EQ. So I assumed this fad died, and as this game had few ally healing or taunt powers, that surely players wouldn't be so silly as to assume the gameplay was based on these.
Yeah. You can guess how that went when I actually joined a team.
as a newbie, I'm finding myself in situations like this every day, but it's nice to see that not just my problem, everyone has a past :P
Where do I start
I've also done the waiting for a train at the exit.
6 slotted brawl. Well it had to be a good power as you were given it to start with
My first alt a Fire/Fire blaster dinged lvl 6 went to get a pool power didn't notice the thumb to scroll for more choices. Took me months to figure that out All the time wondering how other players got the, for me hidden powers
I came from another MMO (a clue there's 2 a Q and a E in the name) where there was one class which was a good healer and fighter. Well I thought as I'm dieing a lot on my blaster I'll roll something similar, so after looking at the options I rolled a Defender Emp/Rad but I then ignored the Emp side and put everything into Rad. Funny no team wanted me
Even now 4 years on I still goof. The latest was on my first BAF. Joined a league entered the mission and I thought "why is everyone so quiet" not a word. Somehow finished it. A few days later was talking to some SG mates about the leagues and one mentioned league chat A very quiet Mereman crept off to hide his embarrassment
This just a few of my many goofs.

The first time I heard someone mention kickball, all I could figure out is that a gravity troller would summon some junk and then the teams would kick it around a map.

Heh, funny stuff. When I first started...
1) Thought once you slotted a training enchancement that it was like that 'Forever'!!! Didn't know that higher or different enhancements could replace them, so around level 3 I accidently slotted the wrong enchancment in a power. I wailed and complained in team chat (about how I was going to have to 'start all over') for a good fifteen minutes before my teammates figured out what I was thinking and corrected me.
2) Wanted to fly so badly. Took 'hover' on a my MA/SR scrapper at level 6, then fly at 14. For several more levels I never knew you could use the mouse for maneuvering while flying (or running for that matter). Used only w/a/s/d/x/space for moving. One day saw a flying toon zooming along a train track and she was spiraling around it as she flew. I marveled at the skill she must have using the keys to fly so acrobatically and smoothly.
3) Probably a year into the game before I venture into that daunting territory known as market/inventions. Baby steps at first, crafting basic IOs and always very small prices. One day I decided to finally craft and sell one of these IOs that go for millions. Put it on the market for 30 million. Didn't sell immediatley so I yanked it back out, and posted it for 20 million, then 10 million...and suddenly realized I was broke. I knew the market charged a 10% fee but I thought that only became permanent if you actually sold the item; that if you took it off the market you got your 10% back. I screamed in broadcast for 10 minutes or so how the Market robbed me of a couple millions inf until someone finally explained how the market really worked
Ahhh to be a newb all over again... good times
Way way back in the day I used to get upset when combining enhancements failed, not realizing that the higher level enhancement was kept and the lower value one dropped.

Heh, I remember not reading the info about powers properly, getting very excited when I reached the right lvl for Flight, only for it not to be able to be chosen yet.
When I asked in the supergroup channel, Psygon pointed out I was only lvl 12......
I nearly cried
We built this city on Rock and Roll!
First time I got a safeguard I saw I only had 15 mins to complete it so I declined as I had to log off for the night. Something in the description made me think it was with other players and I was still too nervous to team.
At first I didn't even know there was a Train, so when I finished my starter contact in AP and he sent me to King's Row I diligently studied my map, and set off for KR on foot.
Getting through Skyway City as a noob on a level 5 was hard. Imagine my chagrin when, upon arriving at my contact in King's Row, she immediately sent me to The Hollows. |
Yeah, I did that too! I was so confused about it in fact, that I came to the boards and asked if there was an easier way to get around. I almost got banned from the game because I was on the official boards explaining my predicament and not the BETA boards and was breaking the NDA...

Yea i did the same thing. Back when i started there was no button or anything you just clicked the "mission completed" text. Wasn't until later i was told you could exit

I was playing using the old Prima Guide (the bound one, before the binders came out), and it described the (old) Unyielding Stance power from Invulnerability, which rendered the user unable to move. I, however, started playing in i3, by which time Unyielding Stance had long been changed to allow the user to move. Still, I was leery of taking the power and put it off for a long time on my first character, an inv/fire tank.
So, my first character was a tanker with no mez protection until 44. I just assumed getting mezzed all the time was a part of every character's life. I carried a lot of break frees, tried to kill things fast, and got good at prioritizing targets. It was a pretty dumb way to play but great training. After that, every other AT and power combination has seemed easy by comparison.

I think this may very well be my favorite thread of all time here.
Its so much fun to look back and remember all the goofy things we did when we were brand new and didn't have a clue what we were doing. Fortunately I hooked up with a SG very quickly when I started so a few of the things I have seen here I either did only once or was given a heads up and never did but everyone has something they did that qualifies as.. WAS I REALLY THAT DUMB BACK THEN?
Kudos to the OP. Can we get this poster some sort of an award?

City of Heroes was my first MMO. As a minty fresh newbie, I often found myself running around with a group of folks, and then one would say something like "Wait a sec, bio break."
I thought, "Wow, these are some dedicated roleplayers! They're stopping in the middle of a mission to write updates to their character biographies." Yeah. I know. |
Other mistakes:
~I'd never played an MMO before CoH, and didn't initially realize that there was no way to "undo" levelling choices. I remember picking Slash on my Claws Scrapper at level 2, getting frustrated with the slow attack (talking pre-i7 Slash here), and thinking "Wait, I didn't save the game, right? If I log out without saving, the change will revert..."
~The symbols on enhancements originally confused me. My very first character was a Fire/ tank, and I picked Blazing Aura as my first power. Then I got to the tutorial and was handed two damage enhancements, which had the same icon as Blazing Aura...so yeah, as a result I thought you couldn't actually slot an enhancement into a power unless the power and the enhancement had the same icon.
I did the waiting at the train exit thing, only I took it a step further. I thought that it was a "watched pot never boils" thing, and for some reason running out of the train station then back in the same door somehow "made" the train come. It took me about a month or so before I realized that no, I was not running out, around then back in the same door. I was actually running out the exit door, then in the entrance where I could actually catch the train. All that time I thought I was running out then back in the same door. But at least I never asked in Broadcast why the train wasn't running.

Oh yes, and I've also waited for a train at the wrong side and added slots to brawl on my first character (a scrapper, naturally).
I remember reaching the heady heights of level 5 for the first time, and getting an invite to a Hollows team.
It took me 15 minutes of frantic searching to realise that the gate to the Hollows was called 'Eastgate' - and not 'Hollows'......
I won't even talk about me picking a fight with a level 36 DE ambush mob when I was level 17 ......

Way back in '04, and my first MMO experience.
Shortly after logging into the game for the first time, I see a guy fighting a group of Hellions, so I run over and help him. A few minutes later, I see the same guy fighting another group, so I go over and help him. Repeat this maybe four more times, before he turns on me and calls me an "a**hat". "What the --- I'm being nice and helping this guy out, and he insults me??" I had no concept of kill stealing, and honestly thought I was assisting him.
Sometime after, I earned Hover for the first time. One of my frequent partners at the time asked me how I liked it. "This power is so dumb," I said, "It's slower than regular running and you can only move from side to side." I felt rather dumb after she explained I had to use the space bar to move vertically.
