City of Heroes 2 Coming Soon
Here's my issue with CoH2: You'd have to start from scratch. Content wise.
Nonsense. I think this MMO has a loooooong way to go before CoH 2.
Personally, I really hope they never do a CoH 2. I like this game and I don't want to see resources pulled from it to do a different game. And I don't see how splitting up our community would be a good thing.

I'm not an MMO person, really. If I stopped playing CoH today, it's incredibly unlikely I would replace it with any MMO. Either I'd probably find an FPS community to re-join, or my other hobbies would just get a whole lot more time back.
CoH has a lot of things that appeal to me that, honestly, I don't think any sane MMO developer would recreate the way they are here. I think that by rather well-established criteria, CoH's mechanics are pretty broken, but in ways that I love. The fact that it was both broken and a ton of fun seems to have been an incredibly unlikely combination of factors - the equivalent in my mind of throwing a sheet of paper and having it stand upright on its edge. It's possible that a non-broken system could recapture the same feel, but I have very low hope for that, because I think it would be really hard to achieve.
I suspect that the devs leave a lot of what's broken here like it is because they didn't have the manpower to even think about it for so long, by the time they did, fixing it would probably cause more disruption in our community than it's worth. After all, we players have stuck around for 7 years, right, how bad can the brokenness be? Well... if it limits what you can do with your game, the temptation will be there to fix it because a game with fewer limits may be a game with more subscribers. When you build a new game, you worry less about keeping the old community happy, assuming you worry about it at all.
I've been through the remake of games before. You usually get a new creative team who think of all these ways they can fix, expand, and improve the old game, and in the process, the some of the most loved features of the old game have almost always been mutated or outright removed to an extent that the core reasons I loved an original were missing in the follow on.
So I'm not excited about a CoH 2. If it does come along, I'll certainly check it out, but I'm setting my bar low on its ability to replace what I've loved about this game.

Honestly, I think it's a tad naive of you guys to think that CoH can survive much longer in the current video game climate... and I'm saying that as a loyal fan who wishes that corporations could magically cater to my niche game forever (like EQ1).
I guess I'm the odd man out in that I'm thrilled at the prospect of this current team building a new CoH from the ground up, especially in regards to the design and art team we now have. I think we've reached the limit of what this engine can do, and at this point it's just holding the design team back.
Speaking as someone in the industry, I feel like City of Heroes 2 HAS to come out next year (Christmas 2012?) from a market standpoint--before the inevitable Superhero backlash comes.

I would love to have a CoH2. That doesnt have to mean the end for CoH.
Why not? People still plays EQ and EQII... Both games can co-exist.
There is some risk to split the community but there is also a chance to get a lot of new players too.
CoH is doing great and still is the 1# in the superhero MMO market but the engine is what is stopping CoH to be bigger and better.
Performance, lag, old bugs, engine cant do certain stuff...
You forgot the mustache twirling.
Honestly, it flatters us that the Community is so passionate about what we may or may not be working on. To know that you all care so much gives us motivation and more reason to continue to make CoH the best Super Hero MMO out there. |

I've figured it out. The Coming Storm is actually City of Heroes 2. Why Nemesis/Mender Silos wants to prepare for the Coming Storm is because he's the first supervillain to be killed off. He keeps on going back in time trying to prevent his death, but so far hasn't been able to do it by himself. Thus, he recruits the strongest that the Well has chosen.
Yes, my dear friends. City of Heroes 2 is a Nemesis plot.

I forced this one. -_-

If they were offering lifetime subscriptions for this game tomorrow, I'd still buy one. It would have been a better deal back in 2004, obviously, but I think it would still be a good deal today. I have absolutely no doubt whatsoever that this game will still be here a couple years from now and I'd be getting my money's worth.

Hey, guys, remember the forum rules about compare and contrast. We're not allowed to talk about CoH2.

Speaking as someone in the industry for almost a decade now, I don't think CoH2 HAS to come out next year and in fact I doubt it would even if they WERE working on it. I can't recall any major game that has announced and launched within 2 years of being announced. I could be mistaken, there's a ton out there, but I honestly can't think of one.
Don't get me wrong, I think a CoH2 would rock, since clearly I think the first one does, and I'd play the heck out of it but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't worried about how it would affect the original. EQ and EQ II are an exception with GW and GW2 possibly being the next.
As far as pushing the limits of this particular game, we've seen some nice things recently with Ultra Mode and storytelling mechanics and systems. I'd not be surprised if we see more down the road. I certainly hope so!
Pointless speculating is pointless though. They're already working on something, that we know, and we'll find out eventually if it's CoH2 or another game. Either way I'm sure it'll be awesome and I'm sure CoH will remain viable for some time. I know I'll be playing.
Edit - and I'm with Arcanaville, I'd totally buy a lifetime even now. I swear that would have saved me some major cash over the last 7 years. :P

Well considering that CoH 2 was copyrighted about a year ago and it takes at least 3 to 5 years to build a good MMO to start from, I'm not worried this is going to happen anytime soon, unless of course they have been working on it for the past 3 years. Yet that is unlikely as they keep letting people go.
As far as a sequel being not as good, I can see that argument, but as long as they keep the format the same and not go to crazy with "repairs". With a new engine, this game would be even more amazing than before.

I agree with the sentiments expressed here; it's bad business sense to make a sequel to a game that's doing well and has only so much playerbase...this isn't a Blizzard product where a seperate game could handle an additional split in their numbers.
If, and only if this is something CoH-related, and none of those job positions even remotely confirm or deny such a thing, I would expect the test bed for that development to occur in this game. We all know Going Rogue was the test bed for Ultra Mode and new ways of making things in the game.
My personal speculation for a while now (and this is supported to a small degree by the story in-game) is that the confrontation with Cole will lead to the confrontation with The Coming Storm....and that is as big and as final as this game gets. Once you confront gods, there's nowhere else to go, really. If there was ever an opportunity to expand the setting to more cities and such, this would be it.
If it's another game, great! Paragon Studios deserves to try something new after seven years of this game and I may well support them in it if so.

You're definitely allowed your opinion. Mine is that this game can certainly last several years longer especially when you hold it up against the other hero games. I'm not impressed with what's out (I've tried them both) and what's planned to come out (it's a glorified console game).

Eventually there WILL be a new game that captures your heart, and I would just rather that game be CoH2. I think they've probably been working on it since the creation of Paragon Studios.
And I don't think CoH will go away, I think it'll go with a cash shop model.

So, do you ever wonder if CoH2 will have better tools for making fan videos, or none at all?
|
Which, by the way, is the one piece of coding I would give a great deal to learn how to do (in other words, how to add that functionality to a game engine).
As unique as the /demorecord feature is (and on other games' forums, when I've brought it up, machinima artists are like, "oh, hell, we'd KILL to have that in this game!"), I gather it's a PITA and a half to keep working. When Ultra Mode first came out for COH, the /demorecord feature was going to be scrapped, until the official videographer went to them and begged them to find a way to make it work with UM.
Thankfully, they were able to.
But if COH2 ever comes out... no, they'll scrap it. And my heart will break.

I hope it doesn't turn out that way. An awesome community is one of the great aspects of this MMO. The more things there are to empower said community to bring everyone closer to the game they enjoy the better.

Not being a programer, I have to ask, couldn't they just make a new engine and put it over this one?

I'd prefer them to do a City of Heroes 2 as a stand alone/ tie in much like CoV was originally. Just in a different city similar to the L.A area or overseas somewhere. Or for it to be a major overhaul of the entire engine. I do not like the idea of the possibility of paying 2 sub fees, and would be supportive of a free CoH if the focus does go into a CoH2, and would hope that there would be a core team that would still develop content for CoH.
