So, I'd dare say that the next "gen" game was going to be titled "Paragon City" and start a new story over from scratch.
Interesting. A seagull told me that the sequel's name was to be something similar: "Paragon".
  2. If it really wasn't City of Heroes 2, then what was it? Will it survive in any form? Who owns the IP for the undeveloped game? Did the development of this new game have anything to do with the end of Paragon Studios?
  3. Obviously, there must have been some development on the next-gen sequel, and many of us assumed it was a no-brainer after the announcement of Guild Wars 2, the domain name purchase, and the next-gen job postings. Many insiders were expecting an announcement by the end of the year. Could this be a part of the puzzle?

Exactly! Like I said, "CoH2 announced by the end of the year, CoH goes F2P".

So, do you think the Next-Gen job postings were for revamping a few zone in a game using a 9 year old engine, or do you think Paragon Studios is working on a new next-gen, non-super hero game?

NC Soft did not spend all that money licencing the Unreal 3 Engine for no reason. Trust me, we'll get CoH2, Lineage 3 and of course, Guild Wars 2.

I think I can safely dismiss these comments, if only because once again, you guys have no idea what you're talking about, as evidenced by F2P being announced when everyone said there was no way in heck that was going to happen. The same thing will happen for CoH2 in the foreseeable future. My bet is at Comic Con, but if not then, then definitely before the end of year.

I completely agree. Not to detract from any of the accomplishments of Paragon Studios, but this game has dodged a few bullets simply because of the poor design choices of the competition. But for a new player? Will they be able to appreciate the design, or even give the game a chance in the first place, when Freedom is lined up next to the shiny competition? I certainly hope so, but I wouldn't bet on it. Honestly, the kind of non-niche, typical player that they are trying to attract is very biased toward "shiny and new". I would have stopped trying to compete with the new engines and focused on the things that make this game unique: The Costume Creator, the Base Designer, Architect Entertainment etc.

at this point and time I fail to see any reason to not answer those questions.

    enlighten me please.
This is such a good point. The reason Virtue is now the highest populated server in the game is because the quantity Role-players we have, and the "quality of life" that these players bring to the game. These loyal, enthusiastic RPers are the backbone of the game and are the players that spend money first and often... so why their biggest request remain un-commented on for over 5, 6 years is baffling.

I am not privy to any of the demographic information on our players, but it was always my assumption that the success of City of Heroes lied in it's ability to attract the "non-traditional", more "creative-type" MMO player with things like the Costume Creator, Architect and the base designer. This is where I would have focused the studios efforts and money to ensure the long-term survival of this game. Less exclusivity is precisely what I would have done to drive them away.

Should any new MMO combine the best aspects of the character and architecture creators in The Sims series, with the best Superheroic aspects of CoH, I would be hard-pressed to not shift my loyalties and enthusiasm to that game.
  9. The only way this move makes any sense to me is in the context of an impending announcement of City of Heroes 2.

Making CoH F2P equalizes it with the rest of the F2P Comic Book Themed MMO competition, all of which were created with better engines (The New Cryptic Engine, Unreal 3 Engine) and modern graphics that CoH simply cannot compete with. If I were a new player faced with these 4 choices, I can't honestly say that I'd choose CoH: Freedom.

Here's hoping you guys have an ace up your sleeves.

I would totally believe this is it weren't for the fact that the entire studio is branded to the City of Heroes theme. My personal belief is that the creation of Paragon Studios was precisely for the Next Gen Sequel, right for the start. I think they've been working on it for a good while now. But we'll see, I mean, I was told by the masses they would never go Free-to-Play and here we are.

This is an engine thing. The original looks as good as it ever will and in no way does it qualify as a "Next-Gen" game. The sequel will be aiming for the heart of the current MMO market while Freedom continues to bleed, I mean cater, to the loyalists.

I don't see there ever being a "City of Heroes 2". This new version of the game is as close as you're going to get to that, IMO.
Well, I could certainly see that as well, but then once again, what are we hiring all those Next-Gen game programmers for? A free-to-play revamp. I don't think so.
  13. And there's your free-to-play. Expect a CoH2 announcement soon.
  14. Would you come back for City of Heroes 2?

I think Planet of Heroes is a great name! I started another thread about the possible name for a sequel if they decide against naming it CoH2, you should add that one!

While this game may be niche, the comic-theme currently is more and more mainstream and at some point this game should be more representative of that changing view.
I couldn't have said it better myself. We're dodging a lot of bullets here because of the superiority of CoH product and brand, and the poor performance of the competition... but that can't last forever.

SOE doesn't keep EQ around because they're so sentimental about it that they're willing to subsidize it off of the profits of their other games. They keep it around because it still turns a profit. They've been more than willing to shut down unprofitable games in the past.

City of Heroes is profitable. In "the current video game climate" that's a pretty damn good reason to keep it open. It's also the biggest reason why there should not be a "CoH 2". Everquest 2 didn't bring in much new business. (Though the recent freemium version is finally doing that.) What it did very effectively, though, was fracture the player base of Everquest. EQ had 500k subscribers at the time so they could handle it to some degree, but when WoW arrived, both games were negatively affected.

Given that there are several superhero games out there now (CoH, Champions, DCUO, Superhero Squad) and that CoH is still the acknowledged leader in that niche, I'm puzzled what the basis is for a prophecy of doom unless they replace it with something new and shiny?
I'm saying that I hope that Paragon keeps CoH1 running forever, even after CoH2 comes out, but I don't feel like CoH by itself is positioned to sustain it's subscribers with all of the new next gen games coming down the road. CoH dodged 2 bullets with Champions and DCUO, and we are very, very lucky for that, but do I think CoH can maintain an acceptable market share after GQ2, Marvel Online, The Old Republic, DCUO and a free-to-play Champions? I certainly hope it can, but I would rather see CoH1's existence secured with a modern, next-gen big brother blocking the big stuff.

The free-to-play model would then allow the die-hard fans a chance to support their game where it really counts (at the cash shop), while gracefully acknowledging it's age and engine limitation in the marketplace, and introducing tons of new players to Paragon City.

Historically, yes, sequels fail, but I think that's more due to execution than anything else. In all truth, they could probably simply remake CoH1 on a new engine and have a success on their hands.
