mouse pointer hiding in plain sight
I use window scale as without it I can't see my power trays/chat tab easily (23" Monitor). I'd like it if the mouse pointer re sized with my window scale.
Oh, and a separate Sound FX setting for glowie/interface SFX would nice.
(This is largely a suggestion for the devs. Thanks Ruff.)

Agreed, thank you very much. The cursors are a big improvement.
They make the -compatiblecursors bearable! shame this is buried in all the mouse cursor problems.
Don't look at this as thread necromancy, look at it as a wakie inspiration!
Recently I've heard more complaints in the game about mouse cursors "hiding in plain sight," and it made me grateful for having Ruff-n-Buff's solution; but it made me realize that many people probably aren't aware a solution exists. As Christmas approaches and heroes and villains upgrade their computers and monitors, mouse cursors will get lost on bigger displays featuring better special effects. The larger mouse cursor mod has saved me a lot of frustration, and continues to save my characters butts, play session after play session.
So to prevent anyone having to dig around, I'll collect all of Buff's mods in one post, in reverse chronological order. His most recent (and probably most helpful) mod is listed first.
I know it's been a long time coming, but I have good news for you all: You wanted larger cursors? Now you can have them!
Preview: Download: http://bit.ly/q2wA3T Installation: Extract the zip to your CoX folder with the suggested path. If the folders do not exist, you must create them. Fear not! This will not alter your actual CoX installation (like Vidiot Maps). Exit the game, relaunch. 32-bit Windows: C:\Program Files\City of Heroes\data\texture_library\GUI\Cursors\ 64-bit Windows: C:\Program Files (x86)\City of Heroes\data\texture_library\GUI\Cursors\ Enjoy! Changelog: July 16th 2011 - Softened gradient found in black pointers. - Slightly altered the hues of mouseover pointers. - Added anti-aliasing to Hourglass cursor. - Added shadow to Hourglass cursor. - Added preview image and installation instructions to zip. |
I have an update on cursor customization, with some new cursors.
Preview: Download: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/120706/cox_cursors2.zip Installation: Extract the zip to your CoX folder with the suggested path. If the folders do not exist, you must create them. Fear not! This will not alter your actual CoX installation (like Vidiot Maps). Exit the game, relaunch. The files should be about 5.5 KB. Personally, I use Winrar. 32-bit Windows: C:\Program Files\City of Heroes\data\texture_library\GUI\Cursors\ 64-bit Windows: C:\Program Files (x86)\City of Heroes\data\texture_library\GUI\Cursors\ The zip contains: cursor_hand_open.texture cursor_hand_closed.texture cursor_point.texture cursor_select_enemy.texture cursor_friendly.texture cursor_select.texture cursor_win_diagresize_backward.texture cursor_win_diagresize_foreward.texture cursor_win_horizresize.texture cursor_win_vertresize.texture |
OKAY!
Until the developers acknowledge the accessibilty problem, I have created replacement cursors. Preview: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/120706/cursor-sample.png Download: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/120706/cox_cursors.zip Installation: Place the contents of the zip in your CoX folder with the suggested path. If the folders do not exist, you must create them. Fear not! This will not alter your actual CoX installation (like Vidiot Maps). Exit the game, relaunch. 32-bit Windows: C:\Program Files\City of Heroes\data\texture_library\GUI\Cursors\ 64-bit Windows: C:\Program Files (x86)\City of Heroes\data\texture_library\GUI\Cursors\ The zip contains: cursor_hand_open.texture cursor_hand_closed.texture cursor_point.texture cursor_select_enemy.texture cursor_friendly.texture cursor_select.texture Junk info: If you want all your cursors identical (bit for bit), I am sorry. The game has some bizarre checks in place to prevent this. It will even give a warning that having them the same is bad for your health and then refuse to launch. If you change even ONE pixel, it's good to go. Yeah, I don't know, either. The game APPEARS to expect a certain file size for cursors and will just truncate any data beyond that, so, this is why the pointers are relatively small. If I figure out how to make them bigger, I will let everyone know. |
Good idea! Here we go:

It's more disturbing somehow that I'm not the only one having this problem. It sounds pervasive. Has anyone found a solution because the timing is awful.

When I left the game I used a 22 inch at 1680x1050, now I use a 2560x1440 27 incher.
BUT - I don't have bad eye sight, I never lose the cursor in the system and in other games, only in CoX. My previous computer didn't run Ultra Mode, but I can run Skyrim and whatever else at the same resolution and I know where the cursor is if I move my mouse one inch. In CoX, even doing a circular motion to find the cursor, and even in compatibility mode where it becomes a low res and bigger pointer, sometimes it takes like 5 seconds for me to find it.
I hope this can help me but I don't think the size of the cursor is the problem for me at least.
It is not just larger, but a different color than the default cursor.
I haven't lost my cursor at all since installing it.

For about a year now, ever since I got my 22" HD monitor, I've had a recurring problem during play. I lose sight of my mouse pointer. There is no graphics glitch or anything, just a white arrow hiding in plain sight somewhere on the large amount of real estate it can occupy.

I've found in recent years that I can't track bright flashy motions as well anymore, and the little details get lost in the shiny blob. Being one of those little details, my mouse pointer is often a casualty. I guess you can't stare at bright flashy motions for years without screwing your eyesight at least a little (Doc says I'm 20/20 though, must be my brain that's getting old).

I've also forwarded this concern along to the development team for consideration as a "Quality of Life" improvement.

I, too, "lose" the cursor sometimes when things get hectic, so I may try the suggestions above.
On a similar topic, does anyone else have troubles clicking on NPCs sometimes? Whether contacts, merchants, civilians, or guards at hazard zones, I often find that -- despite my cursor being right on top of them -- I don't get the targeting box, and I have to move around on various parts of their body before I find the right hot spot and the character becomes clickable. Hazard zone guards are notorious for requiring that I click them below the belt, literally.
Sometimes it seems like I'm playing some sort of adult MMO instead of this teen-friendly game. :-)

After coming back I had many frustrating moments with the AE guy for recipe rolls, and this happens with other NPCs too, didn't bother me much because I don't farm often but it does happen and I'm pretty sure I didn't have this problem before.
I also suffer from Sudden Unexpected Cursor-loss
I've not proved it yet but I am sure there is something in the latest configuration of the game/Windows that causes the mouse to jump position, probably to the centre of the screen.
However I do use these custom cursors and they most definitely help

I just wanna say that these cursors are AWESOME and I never lost mine again, plus despite me thinking that I didn't need bigger cursors, they do help! Plus they are more beautiful and self explanatory (like when they change to a hand or a double arrow to resize a window) than the regular ones.
(the thing I said that part of the arrow was cut only happened the first time I tested it)
I am definitely having the same problem, always losing the mouse. I have a key bound to "mouselook" while I move and that makes the mouse pointer disappear until I release it, and I have NO idea where the mouse pointer is at that point.
One thing that helps me out, at least with dialog boxes, is a bind that I use: Y "dialog_yes$$dialog_answer Accept" N "dialog_no$$dialog_answer Decline" that I keep in a text file so I can "/bindloadfile" on any character. If you wanted to just type it in you'd have to use the "/bind" command before the actual commands. Not much to it, but it helps with all of those little boxes that pop up and request a yes/no response. |

It happens to me all the time. It is worse for me for two reasosn:
#1: I'm two steps from legally blind, with vision so bad that glasses can't correct it further than 20/40
#2: Sometimes I'll play the game on my HD television, and doing so gives me two screens: my computer monitor and then the screen on the television. The mouse can get lost in any of them, and sometimes this will lead to an extensive search just to find the darn thing.

Thank you SO MUCH for these.
CoH is a game of absolute visual chaos, especially in incarnate trials. Since I prefer to run in mouselook mode, with a button to toggle in and out, I'm constantly losing my cursor -- which means when I need to go click on something or place down a location AOE, I get completely lost. This will help a lot!
