Wow. I'm NOT the only one! Been happening since GR came out and I upgraded my rig. I figured it was just something buggy with my new mouse or I was getting old.

I have an update on cursor customization, with some new cursors.

Preview:

Download:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/120706/cox_cursors2.zip

Installation:
Extract the zip to your CoX folder with the suggested path. If the folders do not exist, you must create them. Fear not! This will not alter your actual CoX installation (like Vidiot Maps). Exit the game, relaunch. The files should be about 5.5 KB. Personally, I use Winrar.

32-bit Windows:
C:\Program Files\City of Heroes\data\texture_library\GUI\Cursors\

64-bit Windows:
C:\Program Files (x86)\City of Heroes\data\texture_library\GUI\Cursors\

The zip contains:

cursor_hand_open.texture
cursor_hand_closed.texture
cursor_point.texture
cursor_select_enemy.texture
cursor_friendly.texture
cursor_select.texture
cursor_win_diagresize_backward.texture
cursor_win_diagresize_foreward.texture
cursor_win_horizresize.texture
cursor_win_vertresize.texture

Still getting the following : Bad rawInfo size of 128 bytes for cursor texture or icon 'cursor_select' of 16x16 size.

Used WinRAR to extract. Any ideas ?

Sounds like a permissions problem with your Windows user account and that folder, like the game doesn't have access to the files you are extracting.

You can try adding yourself to the Cursors permissions folder.

- Go to the GUI folder you created (ie: C:\Program Files\City of Heroes\data\texture_library\GUI\)
- Right-click the "Cursors" folder and select Properties.
- Select the Security tab and then Edit, then Add.
- Type in your Windows username (ie: Robert) and click "Check Names". If you typed it correctly, your name will be underlined. If not, verify the spelling.
- If all is good, Click OK
- Under "Group or User Names:", select your freshly added username (ie: Robert) and look below "Permissions for Robert".
- Place a check in "Full Control". Everything else below that column will receive a checkbox automatically.
- Click OK until you are out of everything.

Here is an image to assist:

Man I thought ya had something there. Tried all that on the Cursors folder and just for sh**s and giggles tried it on the whole COx folder to make sure I had full permissions for the whole game. Nada... same error, BUT the game starts now - but all the cursors are just black boxes.. no image. How's that for weird ?

I don't know. I'm out of ideas. I can't reproduce the problem.

Thanks Ruff_Tuff_and_Buff for your contribution to the Community in this regard .

I've also forwarded this concern along to the development team for consideration as a "Quality of Life" improvement.

Thanks!

That's great! I only wish it would work for everyone. Maybe it's a Steam issue?

What setup are you using, damienray? Windows 7? 32-bit? Steam or regular install?

Windows 7 64bit 1920x1200 screen res.

No Steam? Do the vidiot map packs work for you? If so, I'd try mimicking the folder permissions for that.

Things I found:

Arrow cursors are 24x21 pixels, but textures must be a power of two, so the textures are 32x32 pixels. Anything outside 24x21 is cropped, so it is impossible to enlarge the cursor. I went for high contrast and raised it above the backdrop by using a shadow.

The developers put checks in place to subvert using the same texture file for more than one cursor, forcing the game to exit if you try. HOWEVER, trash data can be used outside of 24x21 to differentiate cursors if you want them to appear identical. I did not do this as I find they still get lost easily.

Hand and resize cursors are 32x32 pixels, but resize cursors expect the "center" to be in a specific place, so I stuck with the original dimensions.

I've got a suggestion for that in my wishlist thread - a command that will, while active, create a big "bullseye" over the cursor.

Agreed. I didn't have a problem until I upgraded my monitors for bigger screen size and better resolution. Now I lose it when there's a lot of action and graphics going on. I've started pulling it down into the right hand corner where my powers tray is and that usually helps (unless it sometimes occasionally finds its way onto my other monitor ) but when seconds matter that's a pain. Some way of either making it more obvious would be great. I don't even want it to to be bigger because it would probably be annoying when I'm not in the middle of a massive fight with effects flying everywhere, but some way of 'pinging' it or highlighting it would be nice.

I couldn't agree more.

Just have to say again, these are great. Been using them, and its a joy to reduce eye strain and have distinct easy to see cursors.

This happens on my lower powered machine, with which I have to run the game on lower graphics settings. It might be a missing or bad mipmap in the cursor itself. It's a sort of trial and error thing; I'll have to sit down and find out which setting is causing it, by relaunching the game over and over with different settings each time.
