  1. OK, that sounds pretty much like my experience. Hadn't noticed if leaving the area has an effect, but my char is still Resistance, and I was thinking the same as you.

Also, I have to agree with your character name... :-(

    Recent Lag?

In the past couple weeks, I've been experiencing a lot of lag when playing: power animations delayed till long after they have taken effect, mobs never falling down after dying, civilians and cars rubber-banding, contact dialogue windows taking 5 sec or more to come up. But it's only in the evening here, and I'm in the UK. During the daytime, all seems fine. There have been no changes on my end recently, either h/w or s/w. Since the announcement of closure, I haven't played anything but CoH with the same settings I have been using for ages.

This would immediately make me think it's my isp, with service degrading in the evening when there are more users, but all internet speed test sites show consistent results throughout the day, and I don't have any noticeable performance degradation with other net-based activity, such as online videos.

I've run /graphfps to see if it tells me anything, but rates can be very much in the green even when I'm getting the worst of the lag.

I have noticed that this forum is very slow recently compared to other forums. I don't see how, but could this all be something in CoH itself? And, if so, what can I do about it?
  3. Interesting...! Thanks for the reply. I wonder what caused this for me but left you unscathed.

I guess we will never find out now... :-(
  4. I understand there's not much point in submitting bug reports anymore, but I'm curious whether anyone else has seen these things happening in First Ward:

    1) Phasing for contacts is not working. For example, Noble Savage was standing beside the Hetman when I first arrived instead of waiting to appear till it was appropriate in the story, and although the Hetman has now been defeated he's still standing beside Noble Savage.

    2) Just ran the finale mission for Katie Douglas ("Investigate D-SEC") and it's full of non-targetable mobs who just stand around -- some Carnival of Light, some Vanguard, and several of a strange hybrid: Arachnos torso, Council legs, Scrapyarder helmet, and Crey Protector shoulders. They don't do anything but stand in the way (and an occasional tech heal emote).

I'm hoping this sort of thing is not gonna get worse as I continue...

Has anyone else ever run a Praetorian character from 1-40 without leaving Praetoria? I started this char last month in order to have one last run-through of the Praetorian storyline. Played the Crusader missions and then went straight to First Ward at 20 instead of taking the portal to Primal Earth. I'm wondering if this has somehow caused these problems...(?)

Noooooooooooo!! LALALALALALA! Too bad I can't hear you...

[Never thought there would be something about CoH that I didn't want to know. That AP theme will ALWAYS be CoH to me, no matter what!]
  6. Let me echo the sentiments of others here re: the work you have done over the years, both in videos and AE. Your issue videos usually exceeded the quality of the official videos. Whatever you decide to do for this last one, I know it will bring a tear to my eye.

As for music, maybe you can work in Louis Armstrong's "Wonderful World" with some panning across zones. It certainly was a wonderful world...

P.S. Silver lining: if Paragon *had* hired you as they should have, you'd be out of work now. :-)

D'oh! I never thought to look on ParagonWiki for techie files. Thanks, Quinzel!

OK...now can anyone recommend a good converter to put ogg files into something a CD player will recognise?
  8. Being the sentimental old fool that I am, I'm thinking if the efforts to open up the source code come to naught, I'd be slightly less sad if I could still play the old CoH background music on a CD in my car after the lights go out for the last time in Paragon City. (Heck, I still play the soundtrack from Rome Total War!)

Is there a way to take the files for the various zone area soundtracks plus the opening screen music and make a CD that's playable in a standard player? I can't even find which files *are* the music files.
  9. Thanks, everyone. I appreciate the info.

I saw something in the i24 notes about Marauder turning good, and I don't recall that from any previous iTrials. Did I miss something elsewhere, or did it happen here also?

No thanks re: Vetrano arc, S_S. I can solo that and read at my leisure. Main reason I wanted this is cuz I'm bored with iTrials and never have time to read them when on a team anyway. So, if I go by what happens in that arc...does that mean the heroes are finally able to defeat Cole because he gets mapservered every time he tries to use his AoE powers? :-)

LOL Adeon -- guilty as charged!!
  10. Would someone be kind enough to post or point me to a summary of the plot from the Magi iTrial?
  11. This happens to me frequently with any flying NPC in the DA arcs. Scirocco is the worst, but Imperious likes to get stuck on the Sister Sol final mission as well.
  12. Ah, like "Every sip refreshes!"

    Nice interpretation skills, Rad!
  13. OK, so I've complained before about the ever-increasing number of text errors, but this one actually has me stumped. This time I can't even figure out what they were trying to say.

Frost Shamaness: Scream for him! Every agony is sates!

    Stealth Bug Fix?

Wait, when did they fix Hybrid? Does this mean it won't aggro mobs while my stalker is hidden anymore?

Hmmm...if I go with your form of hyperbole, then you are also "astoundingly wrong", because by far the majority of feedback I have heard about the Twinshot arcs agrees with my statement, assessing the characters as laughable caricatures who talk down to you the entire time, and the payoff of the story is not that you rescued or helped anyone, but simply that you've been duped all along by a powerful "friend". How is this supposed to make new players feel like a superhero? At least the old "go X kill Y" arcs treated you like a hero, with normal people asking you for help because you had special powers.

I think what you meant to say was, "The opinions of most people I have spoken to disagree with yours."

That's literally all you'd fight, were Snakes.
Illusion of choice is a situation where any option selected produces the same result. These missions still provided choice of enemy groups, and very few players will say that at low levels there is no difference between Vahzilok and the other enemies you may fight at low level. Samuel and I have already explained that these missions are still of value to us, and Sam was quite eloquent in describing the reasons why, so they clearly offer something to the game. I'm not interested in PvP, but that doesn't mean it offers nothing to the game if some people like it. Hmmm..wait, that may be a bad example... Do people like PvP in this game? :-)

The point we are trying to make is that we want to have choices and not have to run through the same starting experience with every new character. Personally, I think even "Go to X, defeat Y" missions are a better hook to convince free players to subscribe than the excruciating Twinshot arcs (which come later, I know -- but are still in the early experience) that have embarrassing caricatures talking down to you and that play you for a fool the whole time.

Hey, I like that idea. The paying customers would be allowed a bit of extra server load. We don't need to look at it as inferior content, just as more content, because--as this thread alone shows--the idea of what is "good" content varies widely across the player base.

Besides, it seems this is right in line with a lot of the weekly stuff on offer on the market: things that are already earnable in-game, but for which many players will apparently pay real life cash. I'd rather pay for something like extra instance server load that can't be earned for free in the game.
  18. If any version of the Melee Hybrid power is toggled on, it disrupts a stalker's Hide ability instead of suppressing until the stalker attacks -- as is now the norm for other non-damaging PBAoE powers for stalkers. This applies even to the versions of Melee Hybrid that have no taunt component, though I could argue even those should suppress while hidden.

I understand this could be WAI for some reason I can't grasp, but if so then a warning in the power description would be helpful to steer stalkers away from this power.
  19. Maybe that's the reason for it, but Samuel's point still stands. "Freedom" took a pool of 49 low-level missions (including 17 small arcs) available via a choice of 10 paths (based on your selection of origin and starting zone) and replaced it with a set of about 20 missions, with only 1 choice along the way. The very thing everyone complains about re: redside.

I think the truly evil alternate dimension -- worse than Praetoria -- is one where CoH is just a menu of missions and there is no city. :-(

Now there's an interesting idea! Though given the dearth of new villain content, I won't hold my breath for anything particular to the other two alignments.

One thing that is starting to get old (imo) is when we get a new zone that was obviously written for heroes, and then the text is written in such a way as to shoehorn in non-heroes, giving them the same missions, goals, etc. Obviously this means less work for the devs, but I still think it would be nice if non-heroes were given some consideration other than the occasional minor text change. At least one other MMO gives both sides access to the same zones, but gives each side something different and alignment-appropriate to do in that zone. So the devs there don't have to make 2 zones, but it still plays differently depending on your alignment. That's a compromise I would love to see here.
  22. I think the sampling of opinions in this thread backs up what I'm always telling developers at any company where I work: when trying to decide between options for design, always give the users both and allow them to choose.

Some folks want to get to 50 as fast as possible. Others (and I'm with this group) enjoy the lower levels as well...and we don't want to have to follow the same path with every character. *cough*currentnewstartingexperience*cough*

My vote would be to keep the zone in its current level range, but perhaps do something more interesting with it a la Zombie Man's suggestion.

I certainly don't want even fewer options for non-express levelling.
