The Unofficial 2011 EU Player Meet!
Residentx10 if you knew the UK and from your comments I am guessing you don't. Bigger venues would be far to much outside of budget with all the other costs rolled in (e.g. Hotel costs for the weekend, Travel costs and the cost of eatting out) People can't afford to spend alot at the moment with the economic crysis. That is one of the reasons why not many of our mainland Europe friends are attending this year. Remember they wouldn't just be hopping the state border they would be coming from another country.
|
How many were there last year? It just seems like a cybercafe is too small for such an event...
|
Now this is part of the problem of the EU side in general, our player base is small (some would say very small in comparison to the US side.. tiny in fact)
The last OFFICIAL player meet (held in 2008 at the Omega Sektor which is now closed down) only drew around 300 people tops over the (4 day) weekend, and not all of them were english... there were also regular customers of the venue as well that get included into the figure.
Hell, of course we could do just nothing and have NO events at all, full stop... especially as the Brighton office is now not game orientated, and instead marketing/sales based.
Unlike you guys in the US where you DO have several events a year where you can go and meet the dev's... even community staff... we have nothing to look forward to, even though there is an NCsoft office in the UK.
If anything, just view this as an "open" Server meet... but with an EU slant. (Although which server of Union and Defiant would it be? Hard to say as we have people from BOTH sides going)
And please dont belittle us. Yes, we *know* that the venue is small, but seeing as *most* venues as well that *I* looked at required a £500 deposit, before we could even *book* the venue for the weekend; its something that we (the organisers) just cannot afford right now, and we didnt want to force people to pay up NOW (waaaay waaay in advance) for it either.
The event is open to all. Hell, you are welcome over and join us. The more the merrier I say.
*blinks*
Ok, call me dumb but is ResidentX10 and ResidentX_EU both the same person?
It's cheaper than you think but I'm not going to argue with you here. Good luck at this year's event.
|
If so, I would *love* to hear of the location.
*edit* and doesnt ask for a stupidly large deposit upfront either.
I'm just going to say that I'm grateful for an EU event and the efforts that the organiser(s) are putting into it. If it wasn't for them, we wouldn't have an EU meet at all.

30-40 people showed up, and not all just from the UK.

I appreciate you taking the time to comment about the EU.
First, let me answer a few of your questions. Residentx10 and Resident_EU are the same person. Some times I'm in the Uk too...it depends on the EPL play :-)
Second, I don't really care about the EU whether it's small or large. I can tell when I play but other than that I could care less. I joined the EU servers to get different play, it's been frustrating but I'm think I'll get over the hump in mid march.
Third, I didn't realize the EU was left alone. When I play I noticed you guys get cossie codes(which we don't get in the NA) so I thought everything was in order/balanced.
Forth, cybercafe's have never really taken off here in the US except in the large cities. I don't mean to sound like I'm negative but I was mainly curious about the event. The EU is big place, so when I saw the notice I wondered how you could all fit in a cybercafe. Also, do most users in the EU visit a cybercafe to play CoH? This would answer another question I've wondered about since I joined. When does everyone come online? I saw a lot during double xp weekend but I have not seen many since then.

You're right. Everyone in the EU couldn't possibly squeeze into a cybercafe. Unless of course said cafe was the size of a continent. *Ba-dum-psh*
Funnies aside, it'll likely only be a very small selections of us EU/UK players attending. Unlike state-side CoH players, we are such a tiny collective that only one cybercafe is needed to hold our little computer games event. It's unofficial and hosted by one player so it'll inevitably only be small-scale. But we're also a diverse bunch, with an open invite to all players EU-side. I think the title is apt. Last year's meet did see non-UK attendees who actually flew in. You should come too.
As for playing from cybercafes, no I don't think that's something people do too regularly, but seems to me, gaming at a cybercafe is great for large groups.
When do EU players come online? Peak times are evenings, weekends, holiday periods and also during in-game events such as DXP. You won't see many of us around otherwise because... there just aren't many of us. Hope that answers your questions.
Edit: Also... I am now booked off work and free for September!
Ooooh! Ooooh!
Can I book a tentative 2 days with own laptop please?
I'll double-check with mrs JD before making it a 'definite'.

I'm learning the ropes of the EU slowly. Lots of soloists. I saw so many during double XP weekend but afterwards it's been sparse. I'm trying to find players but sometimes I come on line and the users online will barely fill the search screen. Not a big deal though. I'll keep trying I'll find them eventually. I should get all of my toons out of Praetoria this weekend and ready to move to their destination. I finally found a team to level my villain which I had real problems maturing in CoV.

I can however help you on EU levelling if you need. As I lead a rather active SG on red-side UNION. Also... join channel 'Sals Badgehunters' for your conviniant teams and tf's.

With the EU/US server list merge coming, I should be able to get toons on the EU servers.
I'm wondering what would be needed in the way of modifications in loading stuff onto the computers at the venue to allow me to access my US account there from the launcher.
I will need a computer, but am happy to share one.
I would also be travelling from Norwich by train, and can tell you from experience that the cheapest way to do this is 4 single tickets, Norwich-P'boro, P'boro-Brum and vv booking specific trains, I got my return for £28 last time I went there for an OU study weekend.

I would like to attend, and if you would like I'll pop in the day before and check things are going ok with the cybercafe (as Bham is my hometown. Last time I went in and they actually couldn't get CoH working and so my assistance got CoH functioning on all machines ready for the meetup ).
I can bring my laptop, and also as it's my hometown there are many places I can recommend to eat, drink and have fun
Is there space for me?

I think the main thing will be making sure all the computers have the NCSoft Launcher sorted out on them, or the shortcut thing that uses the launcher... and to make sure all the games are up-to-date with patches. Also, if you could check that there's maybe enough space in the back room for a few... people and a couple of fold up tables or something, that would be really cool too
I'm hoping to travel down either on the Thursday or the Friday, so will try and pop by the cafe at some point too just to say "Hi" and make sure everything is okay.
I used to live in Birmingham a few years ago, although a lot has changed since then. Before I got stuck in the wheelchair I used to regularly go to Costa's and the Torriador pub (when it was still a goth/rock hang out). I'm thinking that a meal in Wetherspoons might be an idea at some point too.

I should be able to attend both days (I'm terrible at planning anything more than a few hours in advance) as it's just down the road from me (I'm in Harborne) and I can bring my laptop (though I haven't actually tried playing CoX on it at any point, so I should probably do that).
In essence, despite looking like I'm totally uncoordinated here, you can put me down

I'm hoping there's going to be enough room for everyone, although it might be a bit of a tight squeeze!

Just wondering if this is gonna be a big thing in the future, maybe look at different locations as well? not the brim is bad but if more n more people want to go, staying at the place currently suggested is gonna be a issue. saying that i dont have a donkey of where we could go XD
