It's not that he doesn't like MMOs. He's actually addicted to WoW. He just hates most other MMOs. But there was a video of him playing City of Heroes a while ago where he expressed support for the game.
The City of Heroes Community is a special one and I will always look fondly on my times arguing, discussing and playing with you all. Thanks and thanks to the developers for a special experience.
I'm surprised he likes anything that isn't a single player game.

Warning: This poster likes to play Devil's Advocate.

Well that game is not as bad as he is making it out to be. But I will say he is right on one thing and thats the character creation not being so great. As for as the kill missions, practically every MMO has these so I dont see what the problems is there.

And this all paints a picture of one thing: that I don't hate multiplayer in itself, I just hate competitive multiplayer. I'm fine until I'm expected to pit my skills against those of another and then I just get edgy. And I think I have a good grasp on why. It's because I have half of a competitive streak. When I say "half" I mean that a full competitive streak means that you love winning and hate losing, whereas I just hate losing and aren't particularly fussed about winning. So on the whole, from an accounting standpoint, it makes more sense just to not play at all. I play games to escape from the misery of daily life, not to feel all pressured from having to prove I'm better at some small meaningless task than some **** in Illinois. I'm not saying there shouldn't be competitive games. I understand why competitive sports exist, it's important to know who's the best at something, it's just that I know I'm not going to be the best on any world stage and I'd rather just accept that about myself. I hate it when online flash games only have global high score tables, rather than your own personal bests so you know what you're trying to beat. The world is big enough a place that there is always, always going to be someone sadder than you. Except you, Sadpants McGee. |

The only game I've ever seen where he has given a really positive review to, is Portal. He even says in the review he likely will never give a game such a review. I can't wait to see his review for Portal 2.
He isn't really a game reviewer. He's more of a game satirist or comedian, he just does it in the form of pseudo-reviews. His goal is to make fun of every game, and he does it very well, he is very entertaining to listen to and the graphics are great, but he doesn't do objective balanced or even fair reviews in the slightest.
That said, I have yet to see a positive review (outside fan reviews) Of the game in question. I haven't played it yet, but given what I've read about it, I won't until they let me download the game and play it on a free trial without having to pay for any of it.
"Where does he get those wonderful toys?" - The Joker
He also liked Painkiller, and I believe I've heard him express liking for one or another of the Prince of Persia games (one of the older ones, I think). He also didn't seem too down on minecraft recently.

His profession is hating games. I watch his stuff for amusement, but I never really take his review to heart unless I know it is a terrible game as well.
Issue 16 made me feel like this.
Warning: This poster likes to play Devil's Advocate.

According to him his goal is to expose games for the 90% crap they really are, so that the truly good ones get the recognition they deserve. He says as much in one of his videos.

And that's fine, but that's not really an accurate review for a game. Though it does make games that don't get heavily abused by him, seem more impressive.
"Where does he get those wonderful toys?" - The Joker
Reviews are strange things anyway. It's really just one man's opinion, so there's a good chance that no matter what method he uses to review games, a lot of people are going to disagree with him a lot of time.
Funny is sort of the same. Some people are going to find his thing funny, some people aren't.
Really there's no way he can please everyone, or even close.
Personally, I think he's got a lot of good points and he's pretty funny. It's likely there are plenty of people who would disagree.
The best example of him 'hating' a game everybody loves was Batman Arkham Asylum.
He even prefaces the review with something along the lines of, "yes the game is great but you don't come to me to seem me lavish praise on a game, besides if you want that you can just go read one of the many reviews...now down to the nitpicking!"
He even ends it with, "the things I've complained about are so relatively minor that they don't make much of an impact on the game as a whole."
In more recent memory he's lavished praise on Minecraft, though pointing out that you REALLY need to read the wiki and have a project or goal in mind when playing the game otherwise you're not going to get much out of it.
I feel I need to clarify something. While it's true that he likes City of Heroes, he doesn't love it.
When he did his piece on Psychonauts, he turned into a gibbering fanboy and inflicted harm on people who didn't buy it. He loves that game. CoH, he merely 'likes'. He doesn't like it enough to talk about it more or do a ZP lavishly praising it, and he doesn't dislike it enough to make one mocking it.
In other terms, if Psychonauts was his long time love, City of Heroes would be "just friends". But for a mumorpuger, that's probably the best you can get from him.
You can see his thoughts on the game in the TV show pilot he made a few years back, Game Damage. In it he makes a Martial Arts scrapper with a maximised breast slider named Jiggle Physics. He also happens upon a zombie invasion after doing the tutorial, and concludes "I'm sort of getting into it. Doesn't mean I'm gonna play any more of it until I HAVE to." (It's a pity Game Damage is terrible.)
Necrobond - 50 BS/Inv Scrapper made in I1
Rickar - 50 Bots/FF Mastermind
Anti-Muon - 42 Warshade
Ivory Sicarius - 45 Crab Spider
Aber ja, natrlich Hans nass ist, er steht unter einem Wasserfall.
Most games aren't as bad as he makes them out to be. He has been fairly negative about even very highly reviewed games. It's his shtick. He finds the weaknesses of a game and uses hyperbole to make them funny. He says some nice things about some games but usually between a lot of insults.

Me: Do you have a gamepad controller?
Friend: Yep.
Me: You'll enjoy it a lot better.

Sounds like a heavy bias to me. If that's really his frame work for reviewing games, I'd say that qualifies him for an unqualified reviewer. To be a good critic, imo, people need to evaluate the objects of their criticisms with something approaching objectivity. If you're going into it deciding most games are utter **** and you're going to expose them as such, then you're really not seeing the game for what it is but actively searching for the worst things about to to exploit for humor.
And that's fine, but that's not really an accurate review for a game. Though it does make games that don't get heavily abused by him, seem more impressive. |
Having Vengeance and Fallout slotted for recharge means never having to say you're sorry.
Except there are good points he brings up about games that people tend to gloss over a little bit, because they become dulled to the fact the industry as a whole has started to stagnate quite substantially over the past few years.

Zero Punctuation's review this week was the newest Direct Competitor to City of Heroes...
In Yahtzee's own words:
Once your investor has been talked off the ledge and you've made him understand that it's a superhero 'mumorpegger' and totally different then his next obvious question would be 'Is it better than City of Heroes?' In this race Detective Comics Universe Online trips at the first hurdle and knocks out a tooth on a hardenned cowpat.
Yahtzee, a man who does not like MMO's in general, LIKES CITY OF HEROES!
Better than that, he recommends it over the newest game on the block, free advertising!
