Is the CoH Game Actually Good?
WOW GUYS... O___o
I cannot be more thankful. Its great help
Ive just finished making my character went to play the tutorial level in Paragon city and was told i needed to enter the disk :S
And then it didn't work.
Would you recommend i just buy going rogue (digitally) and then play and there and learn?

Now people who didn't have a pre-existing account who got GR are required to make their first character a Praetorian which is the new "neutral" faction. (They haven't decided to become a hero or villain yet.) Once that first character is made they will then be able to make regular heroes and villains. You don't have to play the Praetorian if you don't want to. You can start making heros and villains either right after character creation or after you complete the Praetorian tutorial. I'm iffy on that part.
If you want access to the Going Rogue content and side switching features then you must buy Going Rogue otherwise you won't be able to participate in that aspect of the game.
Regardless of whether you choose to play as a Praetorian or not, you should probably go through the Praetorian tutorial. It is, by far, the best of the tutorials we have in the game (in both story quality and in regards to how it explains concepts to newcomers.)

I'm not sure what happened, regarding it asking for the disk and not working, but I hope you get it sorted out!
If you do, I'm sure you'll find the game enjoyable.
One thing to note about Praetoria: It is far more difficult than the rest of the game. That's not to say it isn't fun (many people enjoy it, I am not one of them), but it's different.

It's possible that you've run into a problem with the somewhat confusing packaging in the Deluxe Edition.
There are actually *two* serial codes in the box. One is the main game code with 30 days of time included, which is found inside a little white square with 'Security Code' on it. The other, unfortunately rather easier to notice, is on the back of a disk sleeve. This second code is a 'sidekick' code, which they included so people could give a friend a 15 day paid trial of the game.
So it's possible that the problem you're having is to do with having used the wrong code, or putting the wrong disk in the drive.
ETA: Here's a picture of the two DE codes.

OK, and to be more helpful than my last post...
Praetoria is somewhat difficult to get started in. I tend to think of it as a neat alternative for those of us who are really tired of Atlas Park sewer missions. But that being said, AP sewer missions are a great way to get your power tray set up with the beginning of an attack chain. I HATE villains levels 1-10. I would rather play Praetoria for villains. Even though the missions are harder in Praetoria, I hate navigating through Mercy Island. Between the snakes and the running, I am not sure that I can ever do it again.
More than anything, I would say that I have bounced around a lot of different games in my life. I am in my mid-thirties now, and I have been playing this game pretty consistently since October of 2004. I really like the content, and I have been really pleased with the updates that have come out. I always feel like this game is growing and refining.
You are coming into the game at a more mature point. Most of the wrenching re-balancing has already taken place. I am hoping that you won't need to go through the Enhancement Diversification or severe nerfs to some individual powers (from controller AoE holds to tanker Fire Patch to scrapper regen). You are coming in at a point where it feels like we are ADDING and not subtracting a lot of what people like. Welcome to the Golden Years!

Paragon City Search And Rescue
The Mentor Project
Regarding making new characters, I'd sum up the three tutorial zones (assuming you have access to GR) as follows:
Hero: Atlas: Oldest tutorial that dumps into heroland, where you'll want to join a race-to-level-10 sewer team. Quickest, easiest start, assuming you want to be a hero character.
Villain: Mercy Island: Tutorial that dumps into villainland, where you'll join a team mass-running either Kalinda or Burke's missions until you hit somewhere between levels 8-12. Bit slower and tougher than starting in Atlas, due to distance between missions and finding your way around. Only applies if you want to be a villain.
Nota bene: Many people HATE the villain starting area. Some people hate the entirety of redside (City of Villains; blueside is City of Heroes). Some of those people have posted in this thread. I prefer the more unified visual theme of the Rogue Isles, with their improved graphics and gritty, dirty feel to Paragon's unevenly themed and designed zones, some new, some old. I won't say you'll like it as much as I do, but I do suggest you try both at least somewhat.
Praetorian start: This can be done with either a hero or a villain. The newest of the tutorials, it is somewhat better written and much better looking than the other two. It also allows you to move into the much more interested Praetorian morality missions. There is one big problem: once done the tutorial, you will find many of the Praetorian enemies to be oddly tough, making the game seem hard.
My advice would be to start with a villain, complete the tutorial (the Zig) and get the character to Mercy Island. Then log out and make a hero, and run that tutorial. Pick whichever you prefer to continue with, or keep experimenting.
Other differences from other games:
- We can't take your stuff. Once you have a piece of "gear" (generally called either "Enhancements" or "Temporary powers" or "inf") on your character, there is no way for any other character to take it away from you. - Death is easy. The penalty for dying/defeat is.... not much. If you die, you earn something called "debt", which just reduces the rate at which you earn experience for a little while. You don't lose any money or stuff, you don't have to find your old body, etc. Most of the time, the biggest inconvenice of dying is the time it takes to run back from the hopsital. |
Once you've gotten used to the game and aren't just trying to figure out what is going on, then almost any combination of any set of powers for any archetype can solo most of the content at standard difficulty most of the time. PS: in this game there is a difficulty setting you can set by using contacts in the game called fateweavers or field analysts.
Welcome to the game James, and don't hesitate to ask the playerbase questions. A high percentage of the players know most of the details of the game inside and out.

you'll want to join a race-to-level-10 sewer team. |
Once you've done the 1-10 content a couple of times, yeah- there's nothing wrong with grabbing a sewer team and getting up to level 7 or 8. But there's something to be said for the traditional way of starting the game.
I'm going to say two things:
1) The game may get kinda boring if you're soloing. It's more interesting on a team.
2) Money is weird in this game.
To give more details:
1) When you start, you won't know anyone. Global channels ( search for ones with your server name in them: http://www.cityofheroes.com/game_inf...yer_guide.html ) are good. Another thing that's good is to build your friends list. You'll start out getting on teams where almost everyone sucks. I think of them like bar bands- 6 out of 8 suck, and the rest are worth following. "/friend [name]" lets you put a character on your friends list. "/gfriend [name]" - if they accept- lets you put a PLAYER on your GLOBAL friends list. The difference is that you can see them whenever they're on, whatever character they're playing, and they can see you likewise. Global friending is more of a big deal -for one thing, there's a limit to the size of your global friends list- so don't take it personally if they're just not that into you.
Anyway, once you have a few friends and global friends, you may be able to get on their teams when you log on. Then you find THEIR friends and eventually you have a pretty good community of people to play with.
2) There are two systems of Enhancements [which are permanent boosts to your powers.] The old system is Training Origin, Dual Origin [works for, say, mutant and magic origins but not for tech, science, or natural; five different types], and Single Origin [works for science origin ONLY] of increasing power- generally referred to as TOs, DOs and SOs. You're limited to 95% enhancement in a single feature [95% Acc, 95% Dam or whatever] which is about three SO's.
The new system is Invention Origins [IOs] which are somewhat more effective, and very very very much more complicated. I'm going to give you some bad advice, that is good enough for your needs: Every piece of salvage, every recipe that drops, sell it at the auction house for 1 inf. [Wentworth's heroside, the Black Market villainside. There are Praetorian equivalents that I don't remember the name of.] If it doesn't sell instantly, take it back and sell it to a store.
The way the system works, low bid goes to highest outstanding bid. You will give some people bargains- things that normally cost a million inf, they might get for half a million.
But Inventions are SO much more expensive than old-style SO's that you will have all the money you will need, for the entire game, using SO's. If you decide you want to try the Invention system, money falls from the sky in this game and the Market Forum regulars will be happy to help you out. Just remember that spending ten times as much money gets you maybe 10% better performance, and there are four or five levels of "ten times as much money."
Mini-guides: Force Field Defenders, Blasters, Market Self-Defense, Frankenslotting.
So you think you're a hero, huh.
@Boltcutter in game.
James, If you are on the EU servers* feel free to look me up in game on my global @Dave N Smith if you have any queries. If you joined Union server (you can use any and all, so it's not a one time choice) then you'll want to join Sal's badgehunters and Union Chat to see what everyone is doing.
*There are 2 server lists, European Union servers and North American servers. The list you get depends on the game version you bought, which is usually dependent on where you live.
So i bought CoH Deluxe version. The update is running now. Ive bought one month to see what it is like.

Welcome to the game!
Im a real gamer and i love fantasy games because they are fun. But is the game good? |
There's a LOT to do in this game. A LOT. Plus the fact that you're not limited to a single character or server in the game gives you TONS of room to try out just about any goofy little concept you may want to try.
If you're one of those people who were playing another game and wished you could play it out with different powers, here's your chance!
Like the graphics, the missions, powers, the people etc? |
As to missions, there's tons of them.
A lot of the newer, Praetorian stuff is very well done. Some of the older stuff is a bit flat and kinda stale (though probably not so much for people who're running through it for the first time).
Overall you'll note several types of missions:
Get the glowie(s) (either click on it or destroy it).
Kill all.
Kill the boss room.
Hunts (Kill # Enemies)
Patrols (A modified hunt where you're running all over hell and back to hit mission objectives.)
Escort/Kidnap missions (Rescue/kidnap an NPC in the mission and lead them out.
Then there are the hybrid missions (combining two or more of the above) where you have to complete all the mission objectives either in parallel (do them in any order) or a serial progression (a lot of the newer missions have additional objectives that are hidden until the last objective is completed).
And there are literally DOZENS of enemy groups out there. Each with their own challenges.
And can you join guilds/clans? Is there such a thing? |
This allows you to group up with a bunch of players and know when they come online (though their is a two-tiered friend system (local to the server, and global across the game) as well).
Moreover, supergroups have the ability to build bases. These are a combination of storage locker for excess loot, crafting stations, and transportation platforms to various points around the game. There's also the ability to build a medical center into the base as well. This way, if you die, you have a one-stop shop for re-supply before heading back out to beat some more buttock.
Im sure this thread has been posted somewhere before by someone else so apologies for the spam if there has been. >.< Thanks |
Now there's bad guys out there that need their butts beaten. Get to beatin'!
Addendum: Also going to give you a couple VERY helpful links:
First and foremost. The Paragonwiki
http://paragonwiki.com/wiki/Main_Page
THE site for just about any fact in or about the game.
Additionally there's City of Data. Red Tomax's site.
http://tomax.cohtitan.com/
This is a more nuts and bolts, hard-numbers site.
There's also a several build planners available, to allow you to construct a full-on CoH build outside of the game to look at the performance numbers without going to the time and expense of actually building it in-game. Available in an online version and a downloadable/installable version.
http://www.cohplanner.com/
The one you'll see everyone posting builds to the forum from is Mids. The downloadable version.
Suckerpunch's Planner is the online (web-based) version.
For data monitoring tools there's a couple.
There's the Titan Sentinel. This app tracks your badges, stats, etc in-game and can upload them to the City Info Tracker site. A REALLY nice feature is that it allows you to actually download your ACTUAL build from within the game and export it to Mids.
http://cit.cohtitan.com/download
Here you'll also find the HeroStats app too. This app allows you to look at the statistics for how your in-game avatar is performing. Damage output, damage taken, etc.
Welcome, ItsJames! I am a gal who has played for nearly seven years, and I still love it. This game has so much content that I don't know if I could ever do it 'all'. My advice i to just have FUN. There are wonderful missions with stories and content that make your play enjoyable and rewarding...don't be in a huge hurry to get it to level 50. The journey is as much fun as the destination. There are some really nice people here and gameside that will be glad to help you if you hit a snag. (As stated above, disregard the a$$hats that pop up. Heck, they even wind up in our own families! LOL)
Go forth-kill Skulls and let us know how you are doing. Once again, welcome!

ItsJames, have you successfully logged into the game yet? From what you've been saying, the Deluxe Edition you are using may only be for European Servers, but you might be in an area where you need access to the North America servers.

1. Teaming: I've yet to play another online game that caters so much for teaming. We've got auto Side-Kick, Scaling, Teleport, Team Teleport and great Global Friend list so you can keep in contact with new people next time you log on. I've played WoW for 4 months, Allods for 2 months and Lotro for 2 months and WAR hammer online for 6 months and Champions for 5 months and I made ZERO good friend. The lack of side-kick system makes teaming very difficult especially in a game where you have 80 levels. People team and then say good bye. There is very little interaction unless you join a Guild/Super Group. I also think CoX has more mature players so it is easier to make friends.
2. Fast-pace and full of action! If you like explosions and lots of "graphic overloads", CoH is for you! When you on a full team and have people casting Rain of Fire, poison trap and energy blasts, the whole screen is just so colorful. Oh, did I mention that you can "color" your powers now? Champions allows you to color but the color choice doesn't even come close to CoX's potential IMO.
3. A lot LESS traveling time. This is good/bad. Some people like to travel so they feel the "gaming world" is huge. Well, I freaking hate it!!! I still remember I used to wait for like 5-10mins just to fly from one town to another town in WoW. Lotro takes a long time too. I don't have much time to play when I get home from work, so wasting time in traveling annoys me. However, some people like to take their time to "travel" and they enjoy it.
4. Simplicity: This game is not stupidly "simple". When I say simple, I mean we have invention system, enhancements and comparisons between each sets but all you need is to pick two sets Primary and Secondary and you can pretty much do most of the pve contents without much trouble. We don't have complicated Job system where you have to keep mining stuff to just make the component and then you need somebody else to make them. Our invention system is simple IMO. Only a few recipes can take a while to get but I think generally the time spent on getting them is less than what other online games require.
5. It's only $14.95 per month. I don't know why people think $14.95 is so expensive. If you divide 14.95 by 30 day.... that's how much you spend per day. How much is movie ticket these days?
Enjoy!
What's left is to normalize all Assassin Strikes and improve Stalker's old sets (Claw, MA and EM)! You don't need to bring back the missing PbAoE attack. You just need to make the existing ones better! For example, make Slice a WIDER and LONGER cone.
- We can't take your stuff. Once you have a piece of "gear" (generally called either "Enhancements" or "Temporary powers" or "inf") on your character, there is no way for any other character to take it away from you.

My Tanker dropped at least five times in one fight against Lord Recluse (one of the hardest fights around). She kept getting back up, setting up, and getting back in the fight. And in the end, we won. I have a Dominator who collapses if someone so much as sneezes at her, but when everything goes right, she deals devastating damage in total safety thanks to her range of incapacitating effects. But I'm an edge-of-my-seat player, and I've picked powersets that emphasise this. Also, don't worry about being new - I've only been playing about 8 months, and already I'm tanking Statesman's Task Force. I'm making a couple of mistakes, but no-one's been too harsh about it - friendly advice, not "OMFG N00B *kick*". And I spend a lot of time on my other characters as well, slowly working my way through the levels on a range of characters I enjoy.
Welcome to the game, and mind that first patch. It's a doozy.
