this thread will end well.

anyhow, i always took the narrator of the song to be a satirical character, a yahoo who is shooting his mouth off about how easy rock stars have it while whining about how tough his job is, intentionally crass and crude. so while i did find the word a bit jarring(even back then) it does seem to follow the narrative.

so 25 years later...in a age where things are even more crude...it's too offensive?

Never liked the song anyway. I always found it irritating.

YAYYYY!
Yet another fine example of a federally funded moneypit in my country. The C.B.S.C. once again shows that it is a complete waste of taxpayers money by doing something completely not relevent or usefull.
It has just created a bigger problem.

The C.B.S.C. and the C.R.T.C. need to be dissolved. There are better, more visible and accountable places for our money now.(I am looking directly at you CBC.You're next!)

There was a time when I could see that the Government felt these institutions were nessecary.

That time has passed.Nothing shows it more than this well though out decision.

Hahaha I was going to mention the Huck Finn thing but Zombie man beat me to it.

But ya, it was ONE hypersensitive baby that made the complaint. I really wish that governments, or any sort of media would say "If you don't like what you hear, you don't need to listen to it"

I could go on, but then this would turn into a political mess.

Funny I've heard most Canadians feel the same way about Quebec.

As a Canadian with the misfortune of having been born in Quebec, all I can say is "yes".

But..., but there IS an edited version, isn't there? I remember it playing here in the States when the song was first released.

I guess, I've always heard the unedited version on the radio... sigh... oh the glory days of FM99 WNOR when it seemed less corporate radio dominated.

I was assuming this was why it was banned, I thought Canadians must just have good taste.

Then I remembered Bryan Adams.

What, they don't have the tech to bleep songs in Canada?

Not because Kirstie McColl calls Shane McGowan the same rude word (or piece of firewood maybe), but because she says "You were handsome" without laughing.

This. Considering the fact that it's a rock star singing a song mocking rock stars, I kind of figured none of it was to be taken to seriously. From the land that brought us Kids in the Hall
and SCTV, you'd think satire would be more easily recognized.

And of course, there's notable mention for Space Teens.

@Rylas

Exactly. We need to be careful about editing older stuff because it uses words that are not acceptable now because then we lose the history of why they are not acceptable now.

total kick to the gut

This is like having Ra's Al Ghul show up at your birthday party.

The story I heard was that Mark Knopfler was in a TV/Appliance store, and overheard one of the workers watching Prince on MTV, and the line in question was actually said by the worker. Knopfler paraphrased it for the song, but the word in question was part of what the worker said.

I once knew a woman who, when Dire Straits' "Walk of Life" came on the radio, started going off about how demeaning to women the song is. I asked what she meant, and she said, "He talks about having a woman down in the dark, trying to make her pay." Her are the actual lyrics for that part of the song:

Here comes Johnny singing oldies, goldies,
Be bop a loo la baby what I say.
Here comes Johnny singing 'I Got A Woman'
down in the dark, trying to make it pay.

For those of you who don't know, 'I Got A Woman' was recorded by Ray Charles in 1954. It was it his first hit, and has been covered by literally dozens of other artists including Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison, The Monkees, Stevie Wonder, Tom Petty and Kanye West. In other words, it's a "standard".

So I explained this to the woman, that the song is about a musician playing cover songs and trying to make "it" (i.e., his music) pay, "down in the dark" (i.e., in dark basement clubs and such). It is NOT about a pimp trying to make money off of a woman.

People can be so stupid sometimes.

Actually, the fourth line is "Down in the tunnels, trying to make it pay." Tunnels I assume means on a subway platform or something.

Do they air All In The Family reruns on Canadian TV? Saw an episode last night where Archie referred to African Americans as a synonym for rabbits that live in a rainforest environment.

Ah, so it is. It's been a while since I heard the song and I was going from memory. Thanks for the correction.

Context is everything. You can't just eliminate words because you find them offensive; that's retarded. (See what I did there?) Besides, the story is in the song itself, and it's clear that the character "singing" the song is a total b-hole who is stupid and offensive. Much like the person who complained.

Some years ago I saw some non-MTV veejay introducing the video by proclaiming, "Here's Dire Straits biting the hand that feeds them." Way to actually listen to the song, you moron.

And yet you Americans took Celine Dion off our hands.

At least they're getting quicker at this sort of thing. Last week it was a centuries old book. This week a decades old song. Soon they'll be censoring stuff that's only a few years out of the spotlight.

I'm sure this move will end all hatred and bigotry in the world. On a side note don't anyone tell Canada about gangsta rap.
