Because the casual gamer quite possibly isn't even aware that 2bn enhancements exist, let alone holding the wholly wrong notionthat they are at all necessary. I've been playing this game for 6 and a half years, and I've got 2 50s. One Hero, one Villain. I've also got about 30-odd alts. My hero 50 has a few set bonuses. No purples at all. All of my alts have just generic IOs.

Everything is fine. I can solo any story arc easily. I've duo'd a few TFs, and I've never been kicked from a team for not having purples. Nobody even notices.

You do not need those enhancements you are whining about. The casual gamer does not want those enhancements you are whining about.

You sound quite young to me, which possibly explains your 'wah, want teh uber-loot naow' attitude to the CoH equivalent of WoW's endgame raid gear.

Thankfully, this isn't WoW. And all of this marketeering business is Extra to the game.

It's a wicked fun minigame, but it's not important, really.

Eco.

MArcs:

The Echo, Arc ID 1688 (5mish, easy, drama)
The Audition, Arc ID 221240 (6 mish, complex mech, comedy)
Storming Citadel, Arc ID 379488 (lowbie, 1mish, 10-min timed)

So which is worse? Making billions while someone else is complaining that making money is hard, or then spending those billions on art?

Here's an answer I thought a friend who is very casual approves of.

If the casual player bothers to learn the secrets of the market, he can get phat lewts and the best gear even if he only has very little time to play. This means he can totally skip all the big team events he doesn't have the time for and still be able to get the same gear, it might just take a bit longer. In that other game, it is impossible to have the same gear as the HC players if you can't find the time to participate in end-game raids.

Well, I could make a post whining about how all the white salvage I need for badge-grinding seems stuck in high five digits these days and blame flippers, but if I could be arsed to put the orders in advance it wouldn't be an issue. And it seems the thread has trundled on toward the mark anyway.

This was key for me. I often have to play a "highly interrupt-able format", as I have two young children. I need the ability to drop the game, deal with Real Life Stuff for 5-10 mins, and come back.

With this play type, I can't run TFs (well, choose not to, at least) - or, as some might say, "raid", for the phat lootz. But I can certainly play the market, and get pretty-good lootz.

Maybe I can't get the best lootz, but I accept that as someone who can't run TFs, my earning potential is going to be lower.

Hm. You can run TFs, you can't (or, choose not to) market, and therefore your income will be lower.

There's a similarity there.

I was a skid row player making enough inf by crafting and selling my drops on each new character I made. It was enough to make my toons playable at a reasonable level for the 2-3 night per week I played with for a couple hours with my team of casual regulars. I was crafting and selling a common IO every day and had a little 300 mill bankroll after about 18 months. It was a BIG deal when I broke down and spent 25 million on a Numina unique to help the recovery problem on my DA tank back then.

Then I stumbled upon Fury Flechette's journal/guide around the 4th of July. That little nest egg was enough to make me say "Okay, I'll risk this 50 million trying this and at the very least I'll learn something even if I lose all of it." Well since then, I have used the 10 minutes a day I spent crafting commons to what FF demonstrates in that journal. I have lost track of how much I have made in those 5 months, but I know it has to be around 15 billion, because I spent a bunch respeccing a few toons and still have probably 12-13 bill liquid. It's stupidly easy and takes very little time to make gobs and gobs of money.

I only have one toon (my Ill/Rad) that I "purpled" out, but for the most part my toons are essentially setup with some nice sets and bonuses, but nothing high end like that. The stuff I do with my crew of regualrs doesn't rally demand it, but I have been scaling my sets up these last couple of toons. I have since gotten a couple of my crew doing it a little bit too and they have a couple of billion now each and are happy to not be so strapped for cash. It can make a difference to the game experience if that's what people want - to play the game a vey high level and do edge case performance mini-games. It also doesn't need to if people want to focus on other things the game offers from the social aspects to hours of meticulous costuming and so on.

Bottom line: it aint rocket surgery (BillZ)....These folks just need to put the ego and prejudices aside for 5 minutes and try it.

Cheers

First time I ever regretted joining the 88s. I'M ASHAMED!

I don't regret joining, but I do perhaps regret my REVOLUTIONARY ZEAL for burning inf for a brief moment.

Ah well, at least I helped push the price up into the stratosphere!

How often are these 5-10 minute periods on a typical day?

Why would you be ashamed. I don't get it.

Enjoy your day please.

Check the link I posted. I think Dumple is ashamed of thinking "If I hadn't joined the 88ers I could beat Arbegla's bid"

About once per play-session (obviously, sometimes more, occasionally less), with 2-3 hour play sessions, 2-3 nights semi-randomly during the week. And at least one of those sessions each week is more-or-less pure RP.

(Aside - Yes, I know I <can> run TFs. But they're time commitments; I'd have to hop on, and be on one in 10 mins or less, and I don't want to end up bogging the team down. I do catch one every once in a while; I've done both "new" Posi's, for example.)

I get to market (collect, craft, post, bid) daily, as I read the news online in the morning, with my little one on my lap polishing off a bottle.

I guess I was trying to say I consider my playtime pretty "casual", by the OPs definition. And I adore the market system around here, and it's 50% of what sucked me in.

(The other 50% being the character creator.)

Edit - In fairness to Ms ThatGuyThere, and full disclosure, I do get an 'extra' session some Sunday afternoons, too, but it's maybe once-a-month, ish. My partner is pretty awesome on giving me a lil' extra time here and there.

Sadly, yes. More Tribbles than I can count.

But I'm fairly safe from Klingons.

Yes, that thread is the only time I've felt a pang about setting fire to my pyramid of fake monies.

Boy that link has me tempted as well. I might even sell some junk I've got to get that or to refill the coffers.

I guess it was technically in violation of the EULA (trading in-game currency for out of game items), pity though.

I was kind of wondering about that. Too bad, it was such a brilliant idea.
