So, they determined it was a faulty plug that caused it. A spark that jumped to a basket of clothes sitting nearby, and fwoosh. Thankfully, the fire didn't spread farther than the bedroom, so everything other than that is ok, including the dog who was in the house at the time.

What everyone else said. Sometimes, life rather bites; but it is good that no-one was hurt. Hopefully insurance will take a large chunk of worry away, reducing the whole thing to just a serious nuisance.

We didn't have renter's insurance.
Anyway, only everything in the bedroom is gone, so we need all new clothes (pretty much), a new bed, and various other replacement things. Our Wii was in there too, but that's not too big of a deal. Red Cross has already given us money for new clothes, which we took care of this morning.
What we're trying to do is raise some money for our landlords because apparently their deductible is fairly high. And the sooner they can get that taken care of, the sooner we can go home.

Wow, they didn't make you have renter's insurance? Most landlords do around where I live (though I'd have it anyway... wouldn't want to have to buy back all the stuff we have in here, even if we don't have much due to our modest budgets).

Hindsight is 20/20. A low-end renters insurance policy can be gotten for around $150 a year, and that's in California where everything is more expensive.
Glad to hear no one was hurt, which is always the most important.
Faulty plug huh? Isn't that something your husband should have been taking care of?

Viv, I am sorry to hear about the event but glad to hear about your continued physical wellbeing.
I am so glad you are safe, Viv. Years ago, back in Tampa, hubby and I had something in storage...the storage area burned down...
As for the faulty plug...is it possible it wasn't grounded? Had to get plugs replaced in the apartment this summer because the building inspector discovered they had never been grounded!!!
In the end, you and yours are safe...and isn't that what matters?
