Tyrants Super Hero Name
Maybe he never took a superhero name?
I'm a big fan of roller derby. If you are not familiar with the sport, it is traditional for the athletes to take on humorous or "punny" names. In the film "Whip It" there were characters named Babe Ruthless, Smashley Simpson, and Eva Destruction. However there are a small number of derby athletes who reject these monikers and skate under their real names in an attempt to bring some legitimacy to the sport.
Maybe Cole feels the same way?

I was just thinking Tyrant really doesn't have a super hero name as far as I know besides the one he was given by the Primal Earthlings. So what was his Super Hero name before he went all autocrat?

They call him Lord.

Emperor Cole, pretty much.
Well, he could have been called "Statesman" too - there's not really any reason why he wouldn't have come up with that name on Praetorian Earth as well.

Outside of killing Richter, he seems to have accomplished, more or less, the same things in his life up to the major divergence of the nuke being dropped on LA.
He still opened Pandora's box and unleashed superpowers into the world, and he was still a crimefighter until he gave up, in disgust, at what humans were capable of.
So I'd have to say his superheroic identity was Statesman, in pre-Nuke Praetoria. Tyrant being the name we (of Primal Earth) and the Resistance gave him. Though the Resistance probably weren't -naming- him Tyrant, per-se, but just -calling- him a Tyrant.

Why would Praetorian Cole choose the same name as Primal Statesman when Marauder, Anti-Matter, Dominatrix, Mother Mayhem, Neuron, and Battle Maiden all have distinctive names?
Sure, it COULD have been, but he would be an anomaly.

Tyrant also uses a darker colored version of Statesman's colors, as well as the star symbol that Statesman uses.

In Dominatrix's case I think it's not her -name- or super identity so much as a nickname/title/derogatory statement about who or what she is. And Mother Mayhem is probably just alliteration on her psychotic break (insisting people call her "Mother") with a derogatory comment behind it.
I think Statesman might have been "Captain Republic" or some other two-word name involving a typically masculine title and a description of the form of government he served or a key theme to that government. But simply remaining "Statesman" certainly fits, as well. remember: The others all took or were given their names -AFTER- the Divergent history took over pretty hardcore. Cole's was before the major and defining events.

Dominatrix is about control, so that's an opposite of Ms. Liberty's name.

Have the developers or writers ever really said anything regarding a super hero name for him?
His GR website bio just calls him Marcus Cole or Tyrant, and mentions him as President, Consul and Emperor.

"Sir"
I wouldn't be surprised, with the Roman theme to so much else about Praetoria, that before he was President, Consul, Emperor or Tyrant, Marcus Cole was "The Praetorian".
I've been wondering this myself.
Also, consider that Infernal still goes by his Primal name, nevermind that he's a logical nightmare, as is saying that Battle Maiden is a counter part of Valkyrie. (Different women from different worlds).

And with the tern Praetor and such being thrown around, I think "The Praetorian" would have been his likely name.

Question: Why is the CoH Earth considered Primal Earth? Answer: Leading scientists of Primal Earth believe their world is a nexus of power with tendrils that connect it to many alternate Earths such as Shadow Earth and War Earth. They further postulate that it has more such connections than any alternate Earth and so it must be considered the focal point of those worlds. As with any scientific theorem there are some who disagree, even within the Primal Earth scientific community. Beings who call those other Earths their home also tend to see their world as central. Tyrant, for example, often refers to Primal Earth simply as Statesmans World and any scientist trying to convince him otherwise would most likely find his employment terminated. |
Just their employment terminated? Or would that go for their life too?

Then it must be "Totalitarian Statesman."
"How do you know you are on the side of good?" a Paragon citizen asked him. "How can we even know what is 'good'?"
"The Most High has spoken, even with His own blood," Melancton replied. "Surely we know."
