Discussion: What's your Origin?

It's more along the lines they want more new stuff to play with their characters, not get new shinies and play through the current stuff all over again.

This thread needs more mentions of face slapping and teeth kicking - with bonus points for anyone who can work in a reference to their sub lapsing or being canceled and manage to link it to a collection of optional cosmetic avatar upgrades costing a couple of dollars more than they were expecting.
In the event of a tie, the winner will be decided by the person who manages to make the best leaving threat - however, this threat will need to mention not only DCUO or TOR as being their next MMO, but they will need to loudly proclaim their guaranteed success and clear superiority over CoH with a straight face.

Someone came pretty close to that I think, but I pretty much skipped what they had to say after the first few lines. Kinda like I do with a few other people in these forums. ^^^^

No, but like MJ, I find it a little hard to accept that sort of difference really being meaningful, and thus being serious feedback. Seriously, that's the difference in me getting a couple of bags of chips from the office vending machine. Either I like the set enough to buy or I don't - the cost of a couple of bags of chips while stuck at work doesn't factor into the equation. If you saw something in the pack you really wanted to buy it for, would you really be unwilling to give up two dollars of something else over the course of three months to afford it?

I'm not saying it's impossible your situation is such that two dollars really makes the difference for you, but it does seem an extremely fine point to me.

By Dev perfected, I did not mean "Looks Like An Awesome Toon!" I meant the toon may have been specifically chosen because it did not show off the flaws. I am hoping this doesn't happen but, it has happened before. The Mutant Pack for instance had several flaws, the worst being on the back of a toon wearing one of new costume sets. Very visible. Then there was the issue of toons whose heads were mysteriously cut off and moved to the side a little. I don't see how anything like this could happen again with these particular costume pieces, but you never know and so I am waiting to see them in action.

The hell with parrots, I want a LOBSTER as a shoulder pet!

Actually, what would take this to Eleven on the Awesome Scale is if we also had the option of a DEAD parrot as a shoulder pet.

What you may not be understanding is that there is several things in this pack that I want. The previously mentioned Magic Auras are a HUGE draw for me, mostly because I tend to go magic themed toons and for RP purposes they would fit in real well. A couple of the capes are DEFINITE wants as well. I just think that $9.99 is over-priced. My personal policy is I do not buy things that cost more than I think they are worth. If the price had been in line with previous Booster Packs instead of the prices for the Super Booster Packs, I would have bought it.

I will say this though. If the costume pieces do look as good on the live servers as they did in that trailer, I WILL have to re-evaluate my perceived worth of that Pack. Not sure which way it will go then though.

A Parrot or Dead Parrot costume shoulder piece might just add the value I need to buy this pack right now.

What can $10 buy? A few examples.

  • In the Philippines, for $10 -- or about 450 Philippine pesos -- you can fill a fridge with chicken, ham, fruits, veggies and spices.
  • In Bhutan, 443 Bhutanese ngultrum ($10 US) at the local farmers market will buy a week's worth of vegetables.
  • In Taiwan, you can get 24 new pairs of socks and 10 new ties, all for 300 New Taiwan dollars. That amounts to about $9.50 in the United States.
  • For $10, you can buy 350 spinach seeds and the supplies to grow them, which after germinating and growing to maturity, would have a produce department value of $1,746.50 (350 5-oz. bunches at $4.99/bunch).
  • In the United States, $10 can buy about 5 pounds of rice and 3 pounds of beans. At an average of 1 cup of rice a day with bean (protein) supplement, this would feed a person for 20 days.
  • 0.00001775% of a F-15E (adjusted for inflation from 1998 USD).
  • 5 capes and 10 auras for all of the characters on a single account in the MMORPG City of Heroes/City of Villains.
YMMV, but I'll pass.

So it's ok for them to tell me I'm a dumb and gullible fanboy for spending my money as I choose but I can't tell them that makes no sense? Ok got it, thanks.

One thing that you should always remember about these packs: you vote with your wallet. No matter what you write on the forums, if you buy it, you're casting a vote for "this is a fair price to ask for this amount of cosmetic additions". It doesn't matter if you really only want one of the pieces, or if you'd part with your money more readily if it were cheaper, or if you hate what the game is becoming. If you buy it, you vote for "aye".

Hmmm, do the new Cloak options work with the High Collar from the Magic pack?

I have use for these, I'll probably buy this one.

Alternately a meal for one at a (relatively) cheap restaurant or therabouts. I got a really nice gyro with a side of fries for $9 last night. Just found the place the other day and it's the only one around here that actually seems to make a real gyro ... or any other kind of Greek food for that matter. Mousaka's the most expensive thing on their menu and goes for $11.

Now admittedly there are plenty of people on a budget who play this game and I'm sure there's not a lot of wiggle room in their budgets for the booster packs, but $10 is not an exorbitant amount of money to pay for something. You may not think what's contained in the pack itself is worth $10, but the price-point itself is hardly expensive for the US market (which is the market they're aiming for, not that of Bhutan I'm sorry to say).

I'm perfectly fine with your not thinking the pack's worth it. I'm going to buy it myself, but I have just as much use for the pieces as I have the other couple of packs I've purchased, but your not liking it's just fine. What's absurd is trying to make ten dollars sound like a completely unreasonable price to ask for ... well anything. By that reasoning buying steak on sale for $7 for one meal is unreasonable, not to mention the price of a box of cereal nowdays.

I'm liking this. I think 15 items for the equivalent of $10 is reasonable value

Let's just pretend the party pack never happened

I tried a rice cape and an F-15 aura and it didn't look so good

No slight toward the devs but I do think this is overpriced for it's content and I'll most likely pass on both accounts.

IMHO my coolness/importance scale works like this:

Ninja run>
Full costume set>
Good chest armour>
Good cape/cloak (Magic Pack)>
Weapon>
Other booster powers>
Auras>
Costume change emotes>
Other capes>
Other emotes

If you assign linear points to those items you get:

Cyborg: (4x2)+3+9+(8x2)+5 = 38
Mutant: (9x2)+(3x3)+6+2+5 = 40
Magic: (3x4)+(7x2)+9+5 = 40
Martial Arts: 2+(3x2)+(9x2)+10 = 36
Origin (10x4)+(5x2) = 50
Party pack: 8x1 = 8

Hmmm Ok I take it back. I guess my problem is that most of those auras are pretty similar to the existing ones only 5 really stand out to me which cuts it down to ~30 points and thus ~$7.50

But it does illustrate how awful the party pack was, by my reckoning the party pack was worth $2 (8/40 of $9.99)

Sure you should provide feedback. Just don't expect those of us without entitlement issues and irrational logic to agree or let those opinions slide without comment.

Honestly, in the end, the final straw for me to leave this game, if it happens before they turn off the servers, will be knowing I might accidentally team with one of the entitled masses and help them level. The idea of that alone makes me leery to except team invites already.

I spend $10 for *breakfast* some days at work, when I really shouldn't.

Yeah, I'll be getting this in a heartbeat. Just the auras alone will give me endless play value. I've been looking for that atomic aura all my days.
Not so much a cape person anymore, but I can tweak a few of my character costumes....

Sadly, the amount of "content" in these expansion packs keeps going down and down. A couple of these new auras look identical to existing auras IMO.
The cloaks aren't that great.

But, I guess they'll keep down this path as long as there are people willing to pay.

I've wanted the leafy aura for a long time - I added it to Jay's request thread. But I dont think one costume piece is worth $10.
