Discussion: What's your Origin?
Gotta agree with Feycat and Lemur Lad...
Not only have some of these options been asked for, but they're allowed to be creative on their own (And it is appreciated).
Also... Magical Rune Aura in combat only... Why didn't I think of how cool that is...
and round up everyone that knows more than they do"-Dylan
This is stuff I can find a half dozen other things to use that I already have, to produce the exact same effect. Well, maybe not the poots....

eeek you may personally be happy with using something we have to get an effect nearly like what you're going for, but I know I hate settling.
I have a Lobster esque mutant character, and I hated settling for giant gouts of steam on his "cooked" costume.
For years my main had to settle for monocles before we got real looking goggles.
Every time we get something new that my Dominator can use to get a look more and more like a Mu, I'm happier.
My tanker has solid gold skin and when I saw they had added real reflectivity to the Metallic skin I almost cried.
Electricity is nice, but when you're trying to make a broken down robot, Sparks will be soooooo much better.
Some people may not like some of these new auras since they look a lot like ones we have (Toxic Vapors) but I know other people who will be over the moon, because they've been asking for years for an aura that's a bit more understated than some of the great gushing clouds in the older auras.
As for capes with textures? People have been wanting to see more of them since Cape of the Four Winds, or the Valkyrie cape were put out.
Trying to argue that this stuff is out of the blue and never asked for is pretty silly to anyone who frequents costume discussions, and getting a specific option that fits a character vision is always going to be better than making do with something close.
"Null is as much an argument "for removing the cottage rule" as the moon being round is for buying tennis shoes." -Memphis Bill
some have become spoiled with what we've received before. I'm almost certain that if some costume change emotes were thrown in, or even just a new power, there'd be very little complaints besides the typical "nickel and dime" and "I remember when we used to get this for free"
edit: I think people have forgotten that we've already been paying for costume pieces/fluff long before The Wedding Pack.
- Cape of the Four Winds (CoH DVD Collectors Edition)
- Arachnos Cape (CoV Collectors Edition)
- Justice/Sinister Costume Pieces (Good vs. Evil box)
- Jump Jet (Good vs. Evil box)
I'm a bit foggy on the Widow/Fortunata/Wolf/Crab Helmets and Prestige Sprints, can't remember if they were a pre-order perk or not...
$10 is less than the cost of lunch or dinner at most sit down restaurants. I really don't get this "overpriced" point of view some people are claiming.

At the table to your left is someone happily ordering TWO Two & One Specials, while waving at the chef and calling him by his first name like he's an old dear friend. "Humboldt! So nice to see you again! Excellent work on the toast. Absolutely perfect texture. And the water - sublime!" And from where you are sitting you can see that, yes, the toast looks like it was in the toaster just the right amount of time and not a second more or less.
At the table to your right someone is handing their menu back to the waitress and saying, "Three dollars! Good Lord, that's a lot of money! How about I give you a dime and you let me use the phone to call a cab to take me to someplace where they ain't crazy."
So. Just how hungry are you?
Every player has the right to give comments on this pack.
Those who are yelling at people to stop any critical comments are stifling feedback that the devs need. The devs are not going to give you a cookie for jumping to their defense. |
But when someone posts a three paragraph diatribe after a long history of such histrionics making this about how the Devs are horrible people and how all the playerbase is being persecuted by the the Devs which an implicit ragequit threat... well, calling that immature rant out for what it is is perfectly acceptable.
So is calling out your lopsided view of what's happening. Really, you're going to make the point that everyone who's critical gets jumped on, when this very thread doesn't support that? That's ridiculous.
I'm tired of the people who make gross exaggerations and emotional tirades, and then when called out on such, play the persecution card. Then the rest of the thread is all about their feelings and how they're misunderstood and how they're being picked on.
I'm sick of it and I'll be calling out those who play the whiny-I'm-being-persecuted card... and their supporters.

I'm on board for this one. It's got several auras I've long wanted and requested. And best of all, they look good to boot!
Thanks in advance already for the:
- Leaves
- Toxic Vapors
- Steam Jets
- Atomic Aura
- Tarot Cards
The first four I've oft requested. The fifth is something I'd never thought to request but can absolutely use on a new villain I finally was able to roll up post GR: Midnight Gambler, my DP/Dark haunted gunslinger character. Camped that name for years after being inspired by the original Tarot Card power way way back.
And I really like the Science, Nature and Tech capes. Need to see the Magic and Mutant ones in game to decide on those.
Good work on this pack. I'm pleased and even a little bit excited.

How much for just 1 rib?

And now, time for me to be critical to prove not everyone who is critical is persecuted:
Hey, Devs. Will all these auras and capes be accessible by all character models (male, female, huge)?
Now, I know you're going to say, "Yes."
So why is it that the last cape option from a Booster Pack is missing options for the female model and that this has been broken for a year and a half now? See here for how the Magic Pack Cape is bugged.
No matter how many times it seems I have the ear of a Dev or Mod and point them to it, it hasn't gotten fixed.
So, why should I buy this booster pack if I don't have confidence it won't be buggy for several years to come like the other special capes I purchased?
Actually, is there a way to get my money back for those other purchased capes that don't work right?

Let me first start off by saying that these 15 costume pieces are AMAZING. I drool every time I look at the magic auras myself. The capes are very beautifully done and the auras are even better. The quality and workmanship that went into these definitely appears to be top notch, though I am reserving final decisions for how these things look on actual toons, not the Dev perfected ones.
With that being said I am more than a little disappointed to see a 15 Costume Piece Booster Pack going for the same price as the Super Booster Packs were sold for. The same price and yet not even a single costume set in there? No minor power or effect of some sort? Not even any emotes to round things out? (Not that an emote would really make me feel any better. Just don't use them.)
I could easily afford this pack but, all in all, I do not feel this pack is worth the money. If they dropped the price to $7.99 I would be all over it, but at $9.99 I don't think I will be buying it without some serious drunk typing involved. (Not likely, I don't ever get that drunk.) Two dollars may not seem like much, but it just beats my "price point" for this Pack.
I know a bunch of people will buy this and I hope you like it. I do have to say though, I read at least two different posts from people that said they will never use these pieces but are going to buy them anyways. THAT makes no sense to me and there is no way anyone will ever be able to explain that kind of action. Sorry, but I just don't buy things I don't want or won't use.
To close this out, a big/happy/heartfelt Thank you to the people who put the work into actually making these costume pieces. But to Marketing - not at the price you set.
Not to sound snooty...but the characters they use for their trailers are rather bland and that's the only thing that really bothers me out of everything they do. The only character in that whole trailer that looked somewhat decent was the Tech one. Sorry...I had to laugh a bit when you said "Dev perfected"
-Steam Jets is exactly the same as the build up effect with Self Destruct.
-The Tarot Cards particle effects were done for the Magic Booster.
-Half the trees in Paragon drop leaves. I doubt it was much work make the particle effect emmit from the character and stick it in a menu.
Those are just the ones that jump out at me. I wouldn't be surprised if there's more.
At best these are slight tweaks of existing effects. I don't think someone who already paid for the Technology Super Booster should have to pay for them just taking an existing effect that was created for that pack, setting it to loop and sticking it in a menu.
That goes for the other two. Just like the Open Present emote, they're looking to charge us twice for stuff already in game that they did very little work to repurpose.
.
Do I have to point out that these effects were already done and in game?

Someone pointed out the steam jet one earlier in the thread and you know assumptions like that just lead to trouble Johnny it's not just a cut and paste job.

The Nethergoat Archive: all my memories, all my characters, all my thoughts on CoH...eventually.
My City Was Gone
Based on the video, some of the capes are nice (I liked Impervium and Eighth Circle best) but they don't really scream out as something I want. However, I like almost all the auras enough to buy this.
Blue
American Steele: 50 BS/Inv
Nightfall: 50 DDD
Sable Slayer: 50 DM/Rgn
Fortune's Shadow: 50 Dark/Psi
WinterStrike: 47 Ice/Dev
Quantum Well: 43 Inv/EM
Twilit Destiny: 43 MA/DA
Red
Shadowslip: 50 DDC
Final Rest: 50 MA/Rgn
Abyssal Frost: 50 Ice/Dark
Golden Ember: 50 SM/FA
It's nice don't get me wrong, BUT, nothing I'm jumping out of my chair about. Will I buy it? Probably.
The Tech and Science ones did not really do anything or the Mutant one for that matter. The Magic one looks nice enough to get and see what its REALLY about.
To those who complain of the frequency of these boosts and optional extra costs:
From here on out, expect that once a quarter (every three months) there will be something extra NCSoft will be selling us. There will be three boosters and something else, whether it's an expansion or an edition with an item pack or something.
That's the rate of these micro-payments for the past two years and will probably be the same going forward: once a quarter. Which makes sense for a company that makes quarterly financial reports. It doesn't send investors (or forumites) into a panic when they see three quarters doing well and one quarter with a marked drop in earnings if you can pace out the extras for each financial quarter.
Any hysterical claims of 'all the time' and 'constantly' will be laughed at. Also, they're optional.

What he's saying (and what I'm saying now) is that the purported penny-pinching is getting ridiculous. "This pack is worth $7.99 at most! $8.05 is just outrageous! It's an insult to all their loyal customers!" People are quibbling just to quibble and show their entit--, I mean, disappointment.
If the pack doesn't interest you (at any price) or if you think you should get it for free, just say so. Don't try to attach an arbitrary dollar value of what it's really worth paying.

If you've only played an AT once (one set combo) and "hate" it - don't give up. Roll a different combo. It may just be those sets not clicking for you.

And now my stormy can summon her magic using actual runes (combat aura - magic runes.)
And now my malfunctioning Clockwork unit can actually have sparks flying off her.
And now my steampunk armored Nemesis-from-another-dimension can actually have a steam-powered suit.
I could go on, but I'm sure you get my drift. Lots of us have been asking for EXACTLY these effects for quite a while. The fact we get them at level 1 and they can be combat-only or location-centered just adds icing to the cake.
