Help a Hickman with Hints of Hollywood

Hey, a request for all you movie-philes. I need some suggestions (as many as you can give) for a movie to show one of my classes so they can write a review. It needs to meet this criteria:

(1) Nothing more than PG-13, as I've got a mixed demographic of students (so House of 1000 Corpses is out, as is Two Girls and...well, you get the point).

(2) Nothing depressing. It's not my style.

(3) I would prefer something that they may not have seen before (actually not that tough, given that many of them list their favorite movie as something made within the last six months). This one is not essential, though, so feel free to list well-known, popular stuff, too.

(4) It should probably be between 90-110 minutes long to fit the parameters of the class.

Thank you for your assistance. There won't be any money, but when you die, on your deathbed, you will receive total consciousness. So you've got that going for you, which is nice.

Try this: High Noon. 1952, Gary Cooper, http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0044706/

In my H.S. English class, we had to watch this movie, and an episode of Miami Vice that ripped off the same plotline , pick our favorite and write why.

"Little Big Soldier" look good, is a Jackie Chan Hong Kong movie and most probably haven't seen it. I haven't yet, but I'm looking for it.

"Ramen Girl" is a good/cute movie about a girl who movies to japan to be with her BF and then her BF leaves her and she becomes depressed, loses her way, but then stumbles upon a ramen house and after tasting the ramen there wishes to become a ramen cook.

"11 minutes ago" is about a guy from the future time traveling to the past to collect an air sample... and then he is told that he's been there before. He can only spend 11 minutes in the past and returns to the same night every time due to the conditions at that specific time. It a great romance movie and also puts the mind to work as to whether what the guy is doing is right or wrong and whether or not in the end he makes the right decision. It's not rated, but it'd probably be PG/PG-13. There is an "implied sex scene" where they go in a closet, but you don't see them as your view is strictly through a camera and he isn't carrying it so >.>

Most people will probably suggest some pretty good films. However, IMO it might be more interesting to teach them to write an objective review of something horrible. With that in mind:

The Wicker Man
Batman & Robin
Dungeons & Dragons
The Avengers
Wild Wild West
Battlefield Earth
Waterworld
Mr. Nanny

Damn your number 2 Hickman! I do that so well...

As for suggestions:

Mirrormask: Neil Gaimen, Laughable CG, looks kinda like darker Tim Burton movie, and cheap to get.
Oh Brother, Where art Thou?: Humor, decent topic coverage, and great quotable lines.

If you don't mind depression or subs, pick up Millennium Actress, or if you want to be a complete jerk, show them End of Evangelion, no one really knows what the hell it's about...

Casablanca

I could go on...

Hm. I'd recommend:

The Day the Earth Stood Still (the original, not the horrid remake) for its questions on humanity and if there's anything to learn from it and

Jason and the Argonauts. Nice way to get them into mythology without having Sam Worthington wooden-board you to death.

Here you go:
Ghandi (1982) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0083987/
At 191 minutes, copy it, edit it down to 100 minutes, show it and ask them, "So, do you feel that the story was missing anything, and if so, what?"

Troy, I have some suggestions, but given that I am not sure what you are looking to do exactly with "writing a review," some films may be better than others, obviously. And a TON of great films are too long for use, alas.

Casablanca 102 min- Superb writing and characterizations. Could anyone else have done as well as those cast? Already mentioned and probably a consensus choice

Groundhog Day 101 min- Great writing and a very thoughtful picture without being overt about it. A particular style of comedy that works well with the individual or falls totally flat.

She Wore a Yellow Ribbon 103 min-- Superb cinematography, and very interesting portrayals of a number of groups: professional soldiers, military families, officers and noncoms, native Indians, ex-Confederates. I have heard that the expression, "Too late, Nathan!" was a catch-phrase for years after this film's release.

African Queen 105 min-- Very strong character-driven movie

The Producers (1968) 90 min-- Is it funny or is it not? Is the acting just right or over the top? Definitely a "love it or hate it" type film.

Since the movie version of Common Grounds is not out yet, you will just have to do the best you can...

I'll suggest a great little film that came this year but hardly anyone has seen (widest release was 269 theaters), City Island. It's PG-13 and 104 minutes and it just came out on DVD.

Rooster Cogburn or True Grit both John Wayne classics.

The Secret of N.I.M.H. an animation classic from the Bluth Studios and well worth discussion.

Water Ship Down Another animation classic, while not as extensive as the novel it actually follows the novel pretty closely comparatively to others nowadays.

The Matrix This ones a cinema lovers dream.

First Blood. the original was a compelling tale of the disconnect Vietnam vets felt returning home, especially when combiend with the action of the movie. Stallones emotional crack up at the end is one of his best pieces of acting ever.

The Last Unicorn again an animated classic, some slight variation from the novel but with some exellent voice acting and a compelling and tear jerking story.

Okay guess I can take a shot at it.

Comedy: Monty Python and the Holy Grail - one of my favorite comedy movies

Animation: Hoodwinked - a funny retelling of the Little Red Riding Hood tale, also if I remember right you have that disturbing grandma character in game well this movie has an extreme sports grandma

More Serious: What Dreams May Come - some might find it depressing, I find the art and the story inspiring and amazing

Mess with your class: Rainbow Brite and the Star Stealer - Will make them uncomfortable. Imagine having to write a review about glitterbots and still try to take yourself seriously.

Captain Ron - 90 minutes - PG13 - Be quiet. I liked this movie.

Cannonball Run - 96 min - PG

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon - 120 min - PG13

Great Outdoors - 91 - PG

Princess Bride - 98 - PG

Titan A.E. - PG

I would list The Gods Must Be Crazy, but iirc, there's indigenous nudity in it, so I imagine that would be a no-no.

Labyrinth would be a good one. Lots of right/wrong and the gray areas in between.

I'd suggest Shawshank Redemption but I'm not sure about the rating or the length....
(Oh nvm just read it's R and 142 min)

A Fistfull of Dollars. I forget whether this one is PG-13 or R, but by modern standards it's tough for me to imagine someone who'd be OK with today's PG-13 flicks objecting to it. Great filmmaking in a style you don't see often in today's mainstream films, and still entertaining enough to keep most people's attention.

Might consider Rashomon. It's an important and influential film but one lots of people haven't seen though at 88 minutes it's a little short of your time requirements.

There are some excellent suggestions... some of which I was initially thinking of, so I'll second them:

African Queen
Princess Bride
Oh Brother Where Art Thou
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
Truman Show
...

And I'll add:
Legend
A Midsummer Night's Dream
The Taming of the Shrew
Tootsie
Cabaret

edit: sorry, I forgot to check the time on those...
