Batman to get costume redesign
If you like Bruce you should read the last 12 issues of Robin that leads into Red Robin and then read Red Robin, because Tim has pretty much taken over the role of Bruce in just about every way.
I can't really comment on anything up to date other than Red Robin and Batgirl, but from what I know of story Red Robin's first several issues are more important to the overall story arc and certainly Tim's hitlist has a lot more impact on Gotham than Dick and Damian doing their thing. Streets of Gotham are less likely to hold anything story wise Detective Comics focuses more on detective work than overall story so I doubt that has much in it right now. Batman is probably Dick lamenting about what he's doing more so than him actually doing anything like always. So I'd say you'd probably want to read Red Robin, Return of Bruce Wayne, and Batman, Inc. if Batman, Inc is supposed to focus on Bruce... As far as... "Batman and Robin (alas no where I look has back issues, specifically 9, 10, and 12)" PM me if you want to find those *cough* |
Anyway, thank you for the tips.

Never been a big fan of the yellow circle. Always reminds me that they added it just so they could trademark it.

In broad terms, insufficiently distinctive marks (images, phrases, what-have-you) cannot be successfully protected by trademark. If someone challenges such a mark in court, the court is likely to find the trademark invalid (and unregisterable, if it's a registered trademark). This is the reasoning behind the legend, and this reasoning is more or less legally correct. That is, DC or its parent couldn't defend a trademark of "an image of a bat."
However, the black Batman emblem that was used before the yellow oval was introduced is not just "an image of a bat." It's stylized and quite distinctive. The oval-less emblem could almost certainly be successfully protected by trademark, just as the one with the oval could.
Turning from law to fact, Julius Schwartz, editor of the Batman comics at the time the yellow oval was first adopted, repeatedly stated that it had nothing to do with trademark protection or lack thereof. Rather, the introduction of the oval was meant to create a "new look" for Batman, in much the same way that Schwartz had ushered in new versions of Green Lantern, the Flash, and the Atom a few years earlier. That is, it was what we'd call these days a "rebranding" to make Batman look more like the other DC heroes of the day.
Note: The discussion of trademark law above is taken from both my own understanding of trademark law (this is not my area of practice, so don't consider this post legal advice) and the discussion of this comic book legend in Was Superman a Spy? by Brian Cronin (Plume Books, 2009), pages 40-41. (Cronin is also an attorney as well as a blogger on the subject of comic book urban legends.) The discussion of Schwartz's reasoning is taken from Cronin's book.

Personally, I don't particularly like the new design, but I've just never been a fan of Batman's costume, period. I've always disliked the use of grey; it gives the impression that he either can't keep the costume clean or can't afford to have it dyed an appropriate color.

I dont remember what series it was in, but at one point i recall in the comics him saying why he had a yellow chest symbol. Apparently he found it created a subconcious effect in the bad guys to shoot at the center of his body mass where he had the most protection.

I knew a girl who put a bell on her cat's collar once, so that unsuspecting birds in her back yard would hear the cat coming before she could kill the birds. The cat just got to the point where that bell was the last things those birds ever heard.
I figure with batman, the yellow symbol would just be the last thing the bad guys see before they end up in Arkham.

Well, at least there are no bat nipples or pointed shoulders. Just wait a few months and some lazy or forgetful artists will draw the black bat symbol on his chest.
Morrison needs to be thrown under a bus and left there till he gets brain damaged and maybe that'll cure him of his stupid writing. Seriously, doesn't he get that every single one of his stories gets retconned nearly as soon as he leaves the book.
As far as the "new design" it's just going back to the late 90s batman look, but better... And as far as the emblem... it's there for a reason... to save bruce money and his overall life. He uses it to draw attention there so that people shoot there and he wears extra kevlar there so that it is much easier to survive. |
even ones that were not meant to be in continuity have often been pulled into continuity, such as Marvel Boy,or Doom Patrol for instance.
about the only thing i can think of that got retconed soon after he wrote it was Magneto's death.
Aww gawd, thats gone and torn it hasn't it! - see now because of [MMO related to DC but cannot be mentioned re: new forum rules] they've got to go back into all the art assets and re-do them all, because clearly he's still wearing the old batsuit in it.
Heck it could be worse. It could be this.

Goodbye. Not to the game, but the players. Goodbye. Everyone, remember to have fun. That's all I can say.
Right now I'm trying to catch up on Batman and Robin (alas no where I look has back issues, specifically 9, 10, and 12), Return of Bruce Wayne, and then Batman Beyond (which sadly is a temporary deal). Basically, I just want to keep up to date with the main Batman story line. It sounds like my near future is going to consist of at least B&R, the end of RoBW, TDK, and then Batman Inc.
I guess I'm just trying to figure out if I should also be reading Streets of Gotham, Batman, and Detective Comics among others as well, (and by not reading them, I'll miss something important) or if I'm good at my current position.
Hope that makes sense.
I can't really comment on anything up to date other than Red Robin and Batgirl, but from what I know of story Red Robin's first several issues are more important to the overall story arc and certainly Tim's hitlist has a lot more impact on Gotham than Dick and Damian doing their thing.
Streets of Gotham are less likely to hold anything story wise
Detective Comics focuses more on detective work than overall story so I doubt that has much in it right now.
Batman is probably Dick lamenting about what he's doing more so than him actually doing anything like always.
So I'd say you'd probably want to read Red Robin, Return of Bruce Wayne, and Batman, Inc. if Batman, Inc is supposed to focus on Bruce...
