Why do you play City of Heroes?

I'm doing an advertising plan for a class right now, and one of the steps in it is finding out who the current users are and why they are current users.

So, why do you play this game? The community? The powers? Being able to fly? Being able to log in whenever and just play? Because you have nothing better to do?

And please be at least semi-serious with your answers since this is for a final project.

Two things: Mission Architect and just the overall design of the game and powers. I was drawn in by the MA and enjoy its use despite the flaws. Even used it for a class final.

While things could stand tweaking, I enjoy the game overall. I think a superhero setting allows vastly more creative freedoms than the typical Arthurian swords and sorcery fantasy. Despite missing pieces here and there, the character editor allows a large number of options.

The Lure of being able to finally being able to be a Superhero just like the ones I read about as a kid in the comics first brought me to the game.

The community and friendships has kept me coming back for over 3 years

He does raise a valid point, however.

I play for Voo. He's my hero!

Or just because this game is great at letting me relax and take my frustrations out in all kinds of ways!

Yeah, one of those is true.

I play for the community and the ability to go relieve some stress without getting more stressed in the process.

Fun. It's just fun to run around with my buddies and shoot stuff. There is no need for endless end-game grind, no horrible travel time and always something to do.

It has changed over the years, so let me provide a timeline:

Firstly, it was the idea that a Superhero MMO exists and after enjoying my time with Everquest I wanted to actually play something i knew a little bit about. I fancy my knowledge of Superheroes was more than my knowledge of sword/sorcery. Being at the ground floor of a game like that was a great draw. It was cinched as a first-buy when i saw the opening movie. It made me want to play.

Secondly, as I started playing, my classmates joined as well and it became a mini-community outside of school.

Then, as i realized other comic-book fans were here (and it seems similar genre-tastes were also apparent judging from my first view of the Comic book culture thread) it became my life-line to the ubergeeky stuff while i was in college.

I take breaks here and there because of the gameplay, but i always come back with the batches of changes and always pleasantly impressed with how the development staff and the players interaction. So i would sum up that the community is what got me and keeps me here or at the very least "floating".

I started playing because of being a superhero of my choosing and wanting to experience flight. The reason I have stayed is because of the community, excellent changes and updates to the game, and because I can look how I want to as well as not being trapped into looking all middle-earth.

I play to be able to do heroic stuff, using cool powers, with a team if I have enough time, or alone if not. No other MMO even remotely appeals to me.

This pretty much hits on a big factor for me. CoX has good "sandbox" appeal in all its ways to customize, offering a lot of ways to play the game and enjoy it. It also has a lot of room to tell many, many stories, and replay the game many times (but with a different experience each time).

Community is also a big factor. Victory is sarcastic, true, but the game's playerbase is quite good and nice (for the most part). The forum community is also stellar compared to any other MMOs forums. Seriously, WoW and STO have really bad forums.

So in short, room to explore and create makes the game have lasting appeal, and a good community supporting the experience as well. It involving superheroes is just icing on the cake!

Very much this.

I also enjoy my friends' company, the EU community (small though we are) and the sheer fun of being the centre of a comic book story.

I will also add that as a roleplayer, I enjoy the storytelling aspect of it. I am a part-time writer and although I enjoy writing stories, telling them with other people can take it into very unexpected twists and turns. I find that creative process thrilling, especially as between my friends and I, we're all taking part in a superhero tale. It's the closest you can come to being in a movie.

Pretty much the same as Zerlina. I was the only girl in ahouse filled with brothers so I grew up a toyboy and would sit and read comic books just like they did. The chance to BE a superhero drew me in and then the friends I have made and all the fun I have had over the years have kept me here.

To a lesser degree I love trying out new powersets and combinations (I have 50 levels in most of the various ATs and enjoy figuring out the strategy and tactics I need to use to make them successful. I like the diversity of the game which allows me to join an eight man team or solo as I battle villains.

Okay hope that helps with your project and good luck. :-D

I play because it is the only MMORPG I've played (UO, EQ, AO, Farmville) that's managed to keep my enticed and excited over the years, and I feel proud for my longevity.

Although I've paid nearly $1,000 in subscription fees over the years it's been worth it

Pretty much all of the above. I recall seeing ads for the game (yes, at least at one point our game actually did advertise, believe it or not) before it came out and being interested, and got myself an account about a month or so after launch. Been playing ever since.

The community is a big factor for me - I've been active on the forums here for years and I enjoy helping out other players. I've also been known to engage in the occasional discourse or debate, though I don't have much patience for threads that devolve into all-out flame wars.

The powers have never really been a big draw for me, but then they never were in the comics either. I'm much more interested in character, concept, look and story, and the game allows me a great deal of freedom in all of those areas. What's more, they continue to improve upon that and give me more toys to play with, and so long as they keep doing that I'll keep subscribing.

It also helps that I've built up a small network of longtime players whose company I enjoy, one of whom happens to be married to me.
