The joke that got me kicked from VU2010

Someone makes a comment about ERPvP. So I ask "Isn't ERPvP just r**e?"

I got booted for that. Glad to know this is the year 1950.

Edit: There are a couple of things I need to clarify about this.

There was a porn site linked in a response to my joke. I didn't link it, someone else did.

I have never been warned or silenced in VU2010 for anything. If I had been told to cut it out, or even silenced, this post wouldn't have happened. First offense: boot.

Sounds like something we'd say on Vent.

Wow, seriously? Well, to quote your sig and the late great George Carlin, "Some people are @#$%ing stupid!" Maybe they just need to cool down. Try re-joining the channel in a little while (a few days maybe) and see what happens.

Unfortunately, I know a number of women who have play this game and have been r**ed in RL. Its not something to joke about or be taken lightly.

I would have silenced instead of kicking if I had seen that and had the power, but VU2010 last night seemed to have a bunch of people on edge overall.

And yes I have warned people in channels where I am an op to not used that word in certain fashions. Its all about contextl.

So, because of a nebulous "someone" "somewhere" MIGHT be offended about SOMETHING we say, we should just STFU?

Ever think that joking about unpleasant subjects like the R-word might just be a coping mechanism for addressing such painful topics?

Nah its just distasteful.

Want to joke with a few buds on Vent or in private chat, go ahead

Making distasteful jokes in a large public venue is not appropriate.

I believe there was a link involved and as a MOD for VU I just have to say people need to start being a little more respectful. Stop calling people idiots and stop being mean just to be mean. Being assaulted is not a joke. I was not the MOD that kicked you but then I didn't see the whole thing either. Show some respect people. VU2010 is for forming Teams, TFs, Hami Raids, and chatting about builds and the game. Not calling people idiots, bashing the game and the developers and making jokes you wouldn't tell at work. So really everyone need to take a step back and think before you talk. As MODs we all give you space to speak your mind as long as your are respectful of others. We have 3 rules. Break them and you may be silenced. Break them enough and you will be kicked.

No Politics
No Religion
No Bullying

Ah, we went with a different rule: Don't Get Offended.

What about the link to the porn site?

Stop trying to play the innocent card. There are players in VU that are under the age of consent. Publishing a link in a public forum, it is giving minors an ability to access something not intended for them as well as putting yourself in a situation that crosses legal boundaries.

Had I been there for the entire conversation, I would have reported it directly to customer support.

Easy solution:

People who want to talk about the usual stuff and be sensitive of social issues and the feelings of others, go to VU.

People who want to talk about the usual stuff and say whatever they want without being held accountable can go to bpphantom's channel.

Ta-da!

Welcome to City of Heroes! Where the players justify themselves regardless of rhyme or reason, where they are always right and you are always wrong, where no one can take a joke and where your opinion is pointless and wrong and will get you flamed because how dare you think for yourself!?

To be honest, I won't even talk in channels like VU2010 anymore, I'm usually pretty hesitant to talk over global or even person to person. I'm here to play this game and have fun, not deal with peoples pointless drama because they're too full of themselves. A lot of people on this server are and if you give them reason they will hold a grudge for.. Well, for basically ever.

No, I'm not kidding.

Jade, read the EULA. There is no free speech in CoH as it is not a public forum. It is a corporately owned game that sets the rules and regulations regarding on what they allow. I'm sorry that there are people that abide by their rules and upset you to no end.

It's not about "us" being right or being "full" of ourselves. It's about playing by the rules of the EULA. It's about being in an environment for years then all of a sudden, someone tries to makes waves. If we can play by the rules, then everyone else should as well.

If that's too difficult or too problematic, then there are plenty of other places to go.

I think an S&M comparison would've been safer and more humorous.

Another one of those "the interwebz makes me anonymous, so I can say whatever I want without repercussions" threads, eh?

While I do agree that not every joke is fit for large, public communities, I also think whoever kicked the OP was over-reacting immensely.

There is a very wide spectrum for jokes you can make about any sensitive topic. OP's joke was on the very light side of it, and I don't think it deserved that reaction.

If we were to get offended by every little thing that people joke about, the world would be a very dull, unfunny place.

Then again...I don't know both sides of the story...

Eh, I was kicked from VU2010 last night for having an opinion.

If the channel is going to be run as a private fiefdom where everyone has to toe one person's party line then it's useless.

"Did you ever hear the one about the cancer kid needing a wig?","How about the one with a Priest and two altar boys?" or better yet "That hysterical joke about the Vet who had his legs blown off" these may or maynot offend you but it could easily be consider in poor taste.
The problem with jokes or folks use the fall back attitude "Don't take it so seriously" People are not made the same we all have opinions that are vast and wide.Hence why there is all types of comedians but I believe you need to use common sense when and where to make these "JOKES",comments whatever.
I don't want to hear poop or vomit jokes while I am having supper,or someone screaming bomb in a airport. So while I think they may have come down harshly on the OP maybe that wasn't the right time or place to do it,plus as others have pointed out there are rules already in place in the forum,in game, ect.
I have worked in the trucking biz for along time and as a bouncer for even longer I have heard them all, it doesn't affect me one way the other, but I do understand not everyone is me.

I was recently kicked from the CC channel, VU2010 and LFG Alpha 2010.

I was teamed with a pair of friends of mine a few days ago in brickstown. We where bashing monsters at one of the altars during the supernatural incursion, and a guy ran up and asked if he could join us. I was playing as a scrapper and shot him an invite between attacks.

The thing is, my friends where in the middle of some hilarious and entirely inappropriate conversation about . . . err, 'Romantic entanglements' with an Eidolon. FAR more explicit and bizarre than the one liner that Makai appeared to have made. The warshade joined us, helped blow up the spawn, and left. Apparently such conversation wasn't to his taste.

The difference as I see it is that we where making all these 'in poor taste' but (to our minds) hilarious jokes in our own private team channel. I wouldn't dare talk about the sort of stuff we where in broadcast, or any of the channels that I'm in that I feel would be offended by that sort of thing.
