Depressing thoughts topic: how much have you spent on CoH?

35 months + the original box + CoV + new video card a couple years back + extra gig of memory + extra $5 from associated "upgrade" packages that include a free month (Valkyrie pack, etc) ~= $775. (This doesn't include GR which I'm not preordering but will get, and I may upgrade my card again for Ultra Mode.)

Ouch. That's about 15-16 normal games. But I've gotten more playtime out of this one. Assume 40 hours per game, that's 600 hours of gameplay from 15 standard games. I think I spent more than that leveling my first character, and that's not even taking alts into account.

So how much have you sunk?

Not going to bother calculating it. But I suspect that in my little under 3 years, I have spent less than what I spend in a single year on my weekly or semi weekly grocery runs (and I did buy Mac and AE editions, as well as the Science, Ninja, and Wedding Packs).

It just isn't that important to dwell on how much has been spent. Otherwise we would all be super depressed over how much money we have put out on anything we like to do for entertainment.

If you are getting your money's worth of fun out of your expenditures, then consider it all worth it.

64month + All upgrades

The way I look at it is, CoX for 30 days costs me less than one night at the bar with the guys. That's a 30:1 ratio of entertainment value in favor of CoX.

Worth every penny.

I dont think its depressing but I have bought...
City of Heroes box
City of Villains PreOrder
City of Villains Collectors Box
City of Heroes/Villains Box
City of Heroes AE Edition
Every Booster Pack
About 40 extra slots
Character transfers X's 20 at least

And have never let my account slip...

So how ever much that is...

Plus I am pre ordering digitally Going Rogue... and I am also getting the boxed set from GameStop...

(Multiplay that times 2 for my husbands stuff too)

And we have had on and off up to 3 different accounts on...

54 months here, a helllllllll of a lot of time spent ingame [almost far too much!] but bought zero of the booster packs.

When i go to town i usually spend between £80 - £100 a night so i cant use that statement

I prefer to think of it as $0.50/day of on-demand entertainment

We did this a while back. I'm not sure anymore, but it's a quite a bit.

I have everything CoX related save the wedding pack, and architect box X2.

That means
CoV DVDx2
CoH DVD edition X2
Ninja X2
Cyborg X2
Science X2
Valkyrie X2
Server Transfers X5
3 Five packs of character slots
2 rename tokens

Video card.
Sound card
Ram upgrade

New Gaming rig

No lapse in subscription since I started.

$1200 on last batch of parts.
$100 CoH and CoV boxes
$40 bonus packs
$1200 on prior rig build
$270 on g92-8800gts
$231 on RAM for IRAM
$150 for IRAM
$800 for subscription costs

$3991 spent
1991 days spent since account creation
$2 per day spent.

I pay twice that for a latte and it doesn't last nearly as long.

From the parts purchased, my son has a rocking rig of his own, my workstation is powerful enough to run everything I throw at it and my current gaming rig is screamingly powerful.

Worked out well, I guess. Certainly a healthier and vastly cheaper hobby than being a barfly.

Be well, people of CoH.

What I've spent on the game, booster packs, etc. does not depress me. Thinking about what I spent on server transfers to consolidate all my characters on 5 servers does.

@Doctor Gemini

Arc #271637 - Welcome to M.A.G.I. - An alternative first story arc for magic origin heroes. At Hero Registration you heard the jokes about Azuria always losing things. When she loses the entire M.A.G.I. vault, you are chosen to find it.

I added up to about $1100 of just game-related expenses over ~66 months, and I wouldn't really include computer parts since City of Heroes is not the only thing I do on this rig.

And, really, I spend more than that for BUS FARE every day, so I see no reason for this to be depressing. Many people spend $1100 a month for much less long-lasting entertainment.

Doesn't matter. It's all going to a good cause. Besides...

IT'S MY MONEY AND I WILL SPEND IT MY WAY!

FYI, I wasn't being entirely serious when I said it was depressing. Like I said, it's certainly worth it compared to how else the money might have been spent on even a related activity like single-player offline games. It's really only depressing if you just look at the whole number and don't average it down.

I don't include computer parts into my calculations for total spent on this game, as I use this computer for multiple games...

But I have upgraded maybe 6 or 7 times total...

I spend more per month on Fast Food than I do on City of Heroes.

That is depressing.

Yeah, I included my parts because City of Heroes is the only computer game I play (aside from a couple older games that certainly don't require newer parts).

A lot, but it is not really depressing. I have enjoyed every month paid, and every booster purchased, I even enjoy looking at the CoX hero clix figures I have.

It's surprising how many times you have to tell this to some people and they still can't get it through their heads. And I'm not talking about disappointed parents or angry spouses, here. I mean people who should have no business sticking their noses into your life, like ******* colleagues who insist that you shouldn't be wasting your money on games and instead go trekking in the mountains or go to the beach or drink yourself sick.

I'll have to borrow Dr. Insano's voice for a moment here:

Well, screw you, people! I have my rights! It's MY money! I can do anything I want with it. You hear me? Anything! If I want to, I can chuck it into my fireplace and listen to the pops and cracks like music to my discerning ears! Or I might build a house out of it. A nice, big money house, with a nice money pool, where money flows like water. I don't have to justify my expenses to you! And while you're drinking your brain cells into your bladder, I'm getting smarter, and one day I will rule the world!!!

Ahem... Borrowing Insano's voice is never a good idea.

The only financial aspect of the game I find depressing is the other games I have bought in the past 6 years that I don't play hardly at all.

total kick to the gut

This is like having Ra's Al Ghul show up at your birthday party.

I upgrade my computer every couple years anyway, especially as parts wear out over time, so CoH is not really a driving force there.

Still, the $15/month I spend is way cheaper in the long run since I much less frequently put down $50 for a game that I will finish in a week and might never play again.

City of Heroes - $50
City of Villains - $50
56 Months - $840
Good vs. Evil item Pack - $10
Cyborg Pack - $10
Magic Pack - $10
Science Pack - $10
Martial Arts Pack - $10
Mac Item Pack - $10
Wedding Pack - $10

Computer - $800. I bought it to play CoH on, but CoH doesn't play on it. I stupidly threw out the reciept, so I ended up getting stuck with it.

So, it's $1000 for in-game stuff and $1800 if you count the computer CoH won't play on. And it was worth every cent.

Over $500, when I consider that I got my new computer entirely to play City of Heroes (I was Editor in Chief of the City Scoop at the time).

Of course, this game has resulted in life changes so positive that any price tag assigned would be far greater than that $500, so I'm good.

Wait... thinking about the Hero Cons. Okay, definitely over $1,000.

In all honesty, playing the same MMO over a 6 year span has saved me at least one computer upgrade (last upgrade - 5 years ago) and numerous $50 expenditures to try out various single player games, some of which I probably would not have liked and not even finished!

You gotta spend money to save money...

I view it as a service, basically like paying for my cable TV.

I get far more bang for my buck out of COH than I do my cable.
